I think it's begging for a 120mm EDF in the tail so the canard props are mainly just for manoeuvring, but they're rather expensive...

Tea goes perfectly with engineering. It's a match made in heaven. I don't know if you are a fan of Colin Furze but he makes a lot of amusing (and frequently downright dangerous) contraptions and also drinks a lot of tea while he is doing it. Guy Martin is also a devotee. It's the true image of British engineering to see a chap in his shed tinkering with stuff with a mug of tea in his hand.

I thought this was going to suuuuck. It didn't, which is nice. I think the reason was the delta wings, as these did not stall at low velocity, high angle of attack, for a number of reasons........ The characteristic of "lack of aileron" response at low speed meant that there was separation on the upper surface, but the vorticies created by the leading edge helped with a 'type' of flow attachment.

#1- add a fan unit inside the fuselage with air inlet ducts forward of it. #2- make the fuselage smaller in diameter (less drag). #3- make the canards wing shaped. It seems to be underpowered. Great first design. I am from Rockford, IL. USA. GOOD LUCK
@boredgrass
@boredgrass 4 жыл бұрын
I'd love to see that getting another go. Especially because of the behaviour in the slow takeoffs from the ground. Watching it *reminded me of the Soviet attempts to create their own version of the Harrier VTOL. *I don't compare them directly, of cause. I think about the way the Sowjet engineers had to compensate lacking hardware with simpler practicle alternatives. Your design just seems to me to be onto something that could achieve not 90° but perhaps between 45° and 67° takeoff angle. So to speak a cheep and extreme simple alternative to VTOL.

Version 2 coming up? Squared off fuselage at the tail is a bit high drag, so perhaps a third motor with EDF or just taper it to a point too. Low speed roll stability seems a bit squirrelly. Not sure what you can do about that with flat wings? Maybe make it a dual-delta/LERX type airfoil? If done right that can also help with high alpha. I think there's more to get out of it, considering how well that one worked until it finally crashed. Would it be any better using a gyro and programming some PID logic stuff into it? Wonder what it'd do if you could set it to try holding a given pitch angle from your input, and let it pick the thrust angle that's appropriate for the throttle.
@stevecurtis1088
@stevecurtis1088 6 жыл бұрын
Yes gyro on the pitch to make it effectively fly by wire. Would need a minimum forward element to the thrust vector to keep the elevons control authority. Better still put a third much more powerful motor on the rear for forward thrust- my mind boggles trying to think of how you could set up the mixing/gyro/channel allocation possible on that...

I know I am late to the party, and I am sure this plane is long gone, but the oscillations from the wings are due to the center of gravity being in a neutrally-stable/unstable position. Any perturbations from turbulence and control inputs would cause oscillations with very little damping. To add to the lateral stability, the CG needs to be moved downward and add dihedral. This can be done by mounting the battery in a lower position or shifting the wings up (this is why high-wing configurations are so stable) There's always a drawback, and this case it would be roll speed. But since you're trying a new design, I would prefer stability over maneuverability until the flight controller is tuned. Great video and awesome idea!

Like many viewers of this excellent video, I´m new to this channel and would like to commend the very high (almost Project Binky - high) degree of acknowledgement of the importance of regular tea consumption which we witnessed here. The idea of compensating for the downthrust generated by the flaps was a long way out of the box, as there´d be little correlation between airflow over (or rather under) the wing and throttle setting. I salute you both for the sheer audacity you displayed in building this model. It does have some astonishing flight characteristics as well as looking absolutely tremendous.
