Thud is me favourite Discworld book (so far). I am a huge fan of Dwarves in general as a fantasy race. So for me this book ticks this book a lot. I also REALLLLY like the ending (I won't spoil here) but the imagery I got and the subversion of expectations was just SO GOOD. Book count: 14 out of 41

I think there's a slight analogy between the Deep Downers and Hassidic Jews. It does apply to fundamentalists of all stripes, but it chimes a note with me as being Jewish. The whole thing about the Grags, the Keepers of the Lore, the all black ensemble, the beards, the cloistered, self ghettoised exclusivity, the way more secular Jews feel a bit better simply for them Being Around... I like Grag Bashfullson! I cold go on for an age about Pratchett on all sorts of levels, but I'll spare you that. And it's pronounced Reese Reesun, Welsh you see, Boyo...👍

I've always read it as an analogy of Muslim fundamentalists which was a big topic in the UK news around the time Thud was written

@@ludicrous6380 As I said, it could be easily applied to fundamentalists of all stripes, but it's horses for courses and that's just my personal take. It's partly what'll make Pratchett timeless, there will always be religious nutters, at the moment there's the real danger posed by Christian Nationalists in the States. The real irony is that extremist Christians and extremist Muslims seem to be absolute opposites but they share exactly the same mindset and world view, they just each see themselves exclusively as the 'Good Guys'. Our Terrorists are Freedom Fighters, their Freedom Fighters are Terrorists.
