1987 movie was Nayakan, iconic film in India. It had an anticlimactic ending which sent shockwaves back then. Made as a homage to The Godfather. Mani Ratnam was a big fan of Mario Puzo and Kamal Haasan worshipped Brando. Interestingly Kamal Haasan played his character closely resembling Brando, De Niro and Pacino which was both versions of Vito and Michael as well.

he also did dialogue backward in the last piece .check out neelavanam song The entire song plays in reverse in the movie. And Kamal wrote the lyrics and sang it himself. But the catch is, the song is actually shot normally and reversed only in the edit room, despite that Kamal's lip movement in the movie is in sync with the actual song. So the reverse of his actual lip movement in the shoot had to be proper tamil , so he actually sang it in reverse during the shoot!!

For your information Director Maniratnam is Suhasini's husband who is Kamal Hasan's niece. Mani had directed Nayakan in 1987 with Kamal Hasan. It's a classic movie and in the top100 movie list of Times.
