At first glance this painting shows an Akali Nihang Sikh warrior being entertained by a group of travellers. However as Davinder Toor explains things aren’t what they seem.

Great work. As a Punjabi Hindu and brother of beloved Sikh community, I always got angry when I viewed this painting of thugs executing a Punjabi warrior. It's good to know the context now and the biased mind of the Austrian painter.

@@humanentity2214 it's not half knowledge it's a full knowledge I think you have half knowledge,even the word Hinduism is given by British about 150-200 years ago. Someone can say shivaism,vashism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism etc.are religions,but the word hindu doesn't mean any religion.

Yes absolutely right this picture shows painter's hate for nihangs. As par records of conel D.F MacLeod and book written by Philip meadows tylor about thugs which clearly states these people don't ever attack or kill Guru Nanak's Sikhs may be due to Sajjan thug instance as Guru Nanak Dev has shown him path for his salvation.

There is no way in hell a Nihang would sit down next to someone smoking hookah. This paint is pure imagination. Thugs were in North Eastern party of the country, not in Punjab

It's better to just do a high-res digitisation of such paintings, and hand out information about it in flyers or on a website or KZbin. It's inefficient and it seems like gatekeeping, to play this "high class" game. And it's all about money really, isn't it.

One can only hope that this collection has (or will develop) a reciprocal arrangement with a museum or gallery in Punjab, so that this artwork could travel back and forth, and be shown, in the context the artist intended. When one takes in the whole story (as told here), it shows that the painting isn't anti-Sikh (with whom the artist worked) or anti-Nihang. If anything, the nihang is the honourable, trusting innocent here, naïve to his impending peril among the devious thuggi. The artist's motivation springs from a very unfortunate personal experience, and that made him no lover of nihang. Perhaps the work should be shown alongside any other examples or products of religious/cultural misadventure, which must have been plentiful, when Europeans and Indians came in close contact.

@@harpreetchatha1088 I think this picture is fake/ far from the truth, because for many reasons, or it is just one random simple picture from the many similar ones (to mislead the spectator) making it useless. And this interpretation of the picture above and the information about the author's biography does not make somebody any smarter! Who cares. 1) Ganesh is Ganesh as deva truly is ❤ - the elephant deity riding a mouse. 2) The wife of the "thug" does not click her fingers to kill anybody! 3) Smoking should be banned altogether!!! 4) Sikh/hindu warrior is always on guard! There is a proverb in timeless battlefield art - dead soldier does not serve the society.
