Thuja Bonsai - Developing a Bonsai - From Hedge to Bonsai

The tree is established in its new container, had time to regain strength, and this ready for another more detailed styling. I can now remove more of the flaw in favor of new growth that I’ve nurtured. The bonsai pads are become more differentiated, smaller, and more branching on the main structural branches. As this tree grows vertically, it’s a constant battle with the motives of the tree. Overall this bonsai will be a more natural formal upright tree with a slight directional hint towards the left. Glad you liked the update. I’m going to do another update with both the hedge trees I worked on. I’ve done two so far. And there is a third that is barely alive and I want to show that tree as well to give a realistic picture of what can happen with that kind of work and only decent aftercare. Usually they are recently uprooted from the ground and put in a black plastic pot. So I repoted as soon as I got it. Then initial styling the next year, post harden flush (was mid summer) and they’re in a summer dormancy. All in all not sure about this as an ideal way to go. I live in a colder climate so the summers aren’t as intense as for many. So much fun 😃👍 and you can’t beat the price. You might even get a few and try a really gentle repot and style and cross your fingers.
