This fellow in my opinion is the best classical/chutney singer. When he went to India (Uttar Pradesh/Bihar, where they speak Bhojpuri), he sung his songs there, and people were absolutely shocked to learn he was from Trinidad (after he sung), they would have never guessed it.

(2) The washer-man (the soul) stands there right in the waters (of divine knowledge), (yet is) dying of thirst (ignorance). 1. Jal me` thaṛh pīye nahī mūrakh, achhā jal hai khāsā. (2) Apane ghar ke marama na jāne (2), kare dhobiyan ke āsā. Jal bīch maratā piyāsā. (Refrain) (ṛāūī) Standing in the water, the fool does not drink - (but) the water is good. He does not know that is the body's essence - he only wants to wash. He, right in the middle of the water, is dying of thirst. 2. Chhin me` dhobiyā rove dhove, chhin me` rahe udasā. (2) Aape bandhe karam kī rassī (2), āpan gar ke phansā. Jal bīch maratā piyāsā. (Refrain) One minute the washer-man weeps aloud - the next, he's motionless & sad. He himself is braiding the noose of his deeds - and tying it around his neck. He, right in the middle of the water, is dying of thirst. 3. Sachhā sabun lehi na mūrakh hai santan ke pāsā. (2) Dāg purānā chhutat nahī (2), dhovat bārah māsā. Jal bīch maratā piyāsā. (Refrain) The fool forgets to pick up the soap of truth - that wise men always use. The clothes have an ancient stain that won't go away - even by washing for twelve full months. He, in the middle of the water, is dying of thirst. 4. Ek ratī ko jorī lagāve, chhori diye bharī masā. (2) Kahe Kabīr suno bhāī sādho (2), āchhat anna upāsā. Jal bīch maratā piyāsā. (Refrain) He uses up all his strength for a mite - and gives up a thousand times more. Says Kabir, "Listen, good people (brother) - in the presence of food, you fast. He, right in the middle of the water, is dying of thirst." .

I agree. It is a Kabir BHAJAN AND NOT A THUMRIE at all. This misnomer is common to many Trinidad classical songs. You may say that it is a Kabir Bhajan being sang in Trinidad thumrie style, but the song itself is a Bhajan/ and will always be. . . . .Dennis

This song is not a Thumri. Never was and never will be. It is a Sant Kabir bhajan. I emphasize, Bhajan. Here, it is called a Thumri, because of the metering of the dholak. All bhajans using this type of metering are erroneously called a "Thumri" in Trinidad. I hope that with the advent of more musical knowledge, this would soon be corrected. When you understand the meaning of the song, you will realise that the teaching is for dhobinees like you. This bhajan was rendered by the great Manna Dey and it is still being rendered by other religious devotees, particularly in India.

Just what are you referring to? I complimented him on his singing and I also complimented the accompaniment. And being tied to a promoter means little. to me. I have been in the musical field probably long before you were born. I played classical dholak for all of the classical singers . He was never around to sing with the likes of Sohan, Haniff, Sampson, Ramdhanie, Ramcharitar, Ram Maraj, et.etc. form whom I played dholak. I should know because Sohan, Haniff and I were booked up for years all over the country. was also a member of the Naya Zamana and BWIA national indian orchestra. I played the mandolin and tabla as well , Have you heard of Jhagru or Brownie Quawal. How about Moonesar Sinanan. How about Ustaad Nazeer Mohammed? I knew Kamal, Shyam and Moean personally. My point is that the song rendered was not a true Thumri. Do you know what a Thumri is? And what tunes has he contributed. They are mostly copy cats. When they can compose their own tunes in Trinidad style, then they would have done something. All of the tunes rendered by him are well known tunes of old. I look forward to a Kabir bhajan with his own musical annotation . The song remains a SANT KABIR BHAJAN AND IT IS NOT A THUMRI, no matter in whatever tune it is sang. That is my point and I stress that I complimented him on his rendition.
