Thun, Switzerland

Thun is located at the head of the lake to which it gave its name and standing at the lakeside we have wonderful views of the mountains of the Bernese Oberland. The centre of Thun is located on the Aare, a river which drains from the lake forming in parts islands with pleasant walkways.
I got there from the Camping Stuhlegg campsite in Krattingen (www.motorhomefulltime.com/camp.... The campsite provided a pass for travel around Lake Thun which includes free use of the bus around the lake as well as various discounts on tourist attractions.

Yes, the Swiss Railways are subsidised! They are a public service and recognised as such. Unlike in the UK and AUS where railways are looked at as money-making organisations and then closed if they don't make a profit (Dr Beeching). As a consequence you can live very comfortably in Switzerland without ever needing to buy a car. Also you buy a ticked which is valued for two weeks on any train from A to B, again unlike the UK where you are forced onto a particular train with your ticket. If you miss the train you lost the ticket. That is just primitive.

Oh And my mother and grandparents only stayed in Swizerland during holidays. We (grandchildren) always travelled by sleeping with them for winterfun- skiing. They babysat while parents enjoyed skiing untill we were 4-5 y/o and learned to ski.. My somewhat (asperger) grandfather was "mad" about Suisse and trains;)

Unfortunately the sleeping cars are not as good like then. But nothing beats Sleeping /waking up in the mountains in a comfy bed in a luxury train.

Ive been there as well.. I can recommend to should visit those old Hotels for a drink..Rather expensive though but they can still be stunning inside.. I can still taste the excellent hot chocolate.
