I was kind ironic actually... argh! I'm totally aware of the technical superiority of the SNES midi sound processor, and regret the often gritty and saturated sound from the Mega Drive. But even so, I always have the feeling that SFC t. Actually, even if I really prefer the possible sound effects on the SFC, I also often feel that the melodic flow is "broken". Notes sound flat and cut, while the MD are more fluid and cohesive. I also think that many SFC tracks sounds desesperatly boring and rarely as complexe and refined as what you can hear on the Mega Drive. By the way, some great SFC tracks are just unplayable on the Mega Drive without butchering them heavily, while the opposite is way less dramatic: sounding better, while slightly less "punchy", or aggresive. But this track is not one of my favorite ont the system, by the way...

Plenty of awesome rock and/or techno style music on the SNES. Mega Man X games, and X2 definitely some some punk "skank" beat vibes. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is a must listen if you like metal. The first part of Earthbound final boss music has some crunchy heavy metal. There's the Battletoad's soundtrack as well. Killer Instinct. The other guy mentioned Plok which is also very good and has some good rock/jazz style tunes. There is some very good music on the Genesis, but the SNES did have a better overall sound chip. It took more work to get certain sounds, like good percussion and a good bassy sound, but it has absolutely been done, plus you could get all sorts of strings, synth instruments, woodwinds, piano. Take a listen to some Mega Man X, FF: MQ, and Battletoads music, then listen to Actraiser 2, (Super) Castlevania 4, and Secret of Mana.

Taz, from 1989-1991 absolutely agree. Sega's early efforts with their own audio hardware was kind of mediocre. Phantasy Star 2, Golden Axe, Ghouls and Ghosts etc, don't sound as good as they could have. But they truly improved once the generation went on. Shinobi 3 is a Top 5 16-bit score produced by them, Phantasy Star IV while inconsistent, is overall a massive improvement over II. And we know how fantastic the Sonic scores are, as well as stuff like Ristar and Comix Zone by Howard Drossin. Bio Hazard Battle is ominously atmospheric too. I also enjoy the score from Ranger X.

@One-Week-Wizard8 жыл бұрын
I'd contest you on that one, personally. No denying that Metal Squad isn't utterly fantastic, but Venus Fire hands this its ass any day of the week. In addition, TF3 has a great soundtrack with plenty of solid tracks (Back to the Fire, Truth, Take a Chance, Hunger Made Them Desperate being my own favourites) whereas this is the only one that really stands out from TF4 if I'm honest because it all sounds the same otherwise.
@retrosoul87708 жыл бұрын
I was referring to the games themselves as a whole, not just their respective soundtracks. As a game, I personally much prefer the brutal challenge of TFIV, but they both have phenomenal soundtracks, Hunger Made Them Desperate is one of my fav Genesis songs along with the other tracks you mentioned. But dude really? To say this is the only track that stands out on TF4 though is kind of ludicrous, (I mean maybe it is for you) but perhaps it's worth giving it another listen or maybe you're just not that into metal because that's the theme this ost takes over TF3's more electronic vibe. Evil Destroyer, Strike Out, Attack Sharply. Recalcitrance, Danger Zone, War Like Requiem gets me pumped to all hell. Great Sea Power, and Space Walk have perfect atmosphere for their stages and Stand Up Against Myself is one of the best 16-bit tracks ever. To each his own but whenever someone says "it all sounds the same" it usually means they simply have not invested enough time listening to the material, because I've said that about certain music albums in the past myself, and after more listening and memorization, I found myself to be mistaken. But whatever man, were all free to have our own opinions.

It really all depends on what the sound chip’s trying to play, IMO. For things like funk, rock, or metal, the Genesis is *easily* in the top of its league. But for something like an orchestral or classical piece it won’t sound nearly as good as, say, the SNES, because the sound chip is built for synthesis and not sampling, and you can’t easily reproduce the sounds of the kinds of instruments used in those pieces via a synthesizer. (This is also why voice samples tend to be kinda bad on the Genesis.)

@@harrisonhall1139 Oh yeah, the SNES certainly has some excellent pieces of its own. (The boss theme from Plok comes to mind.) I probably should've phrased that better initially; I mostly meant that the SNES chip is more "balanced" due to using samples--it's not necessarily the *best* in every genre of music, but given a talented composer, it can make any genre sound quite good due to being able to produce a wide variety of sounds that FM synthesis chips couldn't produce effectively.

The Whole Internet Snes just worked out that choirs and strings sounded more legit in synths - it sounded pretty cheap to me, at least Sega took more risks.

@thefunframe791210 жыл бұрын
It is the best piece of 16-bit music game ever written, in the whole megadrive and snes catalog. it would be incredible that someone released a studio disk on technosoft thunderforce IV music on real guitars and rock band instruments, as well as it has been made with epic golden axe megadrive OST with fan made covers. then these songs would be have also an intro and an ending, instead of playing in a loop. When talking about best videogame music, people always talk about castlevania, or final fantasy, or street fighter 2, but as usual the best game music is hidden in the games that are elusive to "experts" best games list, like the first stage of Steel empire for example, the roll ending credits music on world heroes 2 snes, most music in musha aleste, megadrive, or almost all golden axe music. They will just never appear on the lists, but are simply the best music made then, beter, best arranged and more epic in my opinion, to those more popular.

THIS is what the Yamaha and the TI chips in the system were ment to. Crisp crunchy tunes. It is perfection. Perfection delievered by the very best. Make no mistake, many composers were good with the sound hardware, some were even excellent. But there is no other developer, who had the the composers who understood the strengths of the FM-Synth chip in the Mega Drive better than Techno Soft's. Their compositions were superb across the board. Thunder Force 4 and Herzog Zwei being the best examples.

One interesting fact about the Genesis years is how much copyright infringement Sega got away with. Every once in a while, they got their hands slapped as they did when they used Spiderman, Batman, Rambo, Godzilla, and the Terminator as bosses in Revenge of Shinobi. This entire soundtrack has a good bit of lifted material. But the composers were brilliant enough to pull it off without getting Sega slapped with a lawsuit.
