Thunder Tube

This amazing instrument comes from the Remo drum company in the USA. They call it a Spring Drum, and also a Thunder Tube, and they promise it will 'electrify your soul!'
The Thunder Tubes come in different sizes, and this we think is the biggest one, but essentially they all consist of a tube which is open at one end, with a drum head at the other end, and with a spring attached to the centre of the drum head. Shake the drum, and the vibrations in the spring are transmitted to the head, creating an amazing sound.

No, that’s a thunder tube. Rain makers are closed on both ends, very long normally, and when you tilt it the beads inside the tube make the rain noise.

Is it safe to pull the spring? I wonder if pulling the spring will produce a true thunder sound with the combination of the hard pop and rattling bass.

I remember making a homemade thing much like that, but using a common 1-gallon bean can. Drill a very small hole in the bottom. Pass a length of waxed string through the hole and tie it off. Then wet your fingers a little and pull down the length of the string and listen to the awful monstrous howl the thing makes. I bet that thunder tube would sound scary played the same way.

i had a teacher with something like ths, it was a wooden tube full of beads or something and when you fliped it the beads inside the tube sounded like rain

Try McMaster-Carr.. Look for cut to length springs.. Compression spring is probably what you want because they have loose winding like the one shown. They come in lenghts up to 36 inch.
