There are quite a load of planets, even rocky ones, with more than enough place, and orbiting in the right areas. Our observations tell us that there are molecules from basic organic chemistry out there in space, so this chemical branch isn't uncommon either. We also know that life appeared on Earth at a time where it was just about starting to cool down seriously. It was still a rather young planet, with incredibly harsh conditions. So it's not like life needs super hard to find conditions to appear. No, the real killer is time: life needs a shit load of that to evolve to the point where we are, and life did face quite a lot of occasions where it could have been wiped out clean off. That's the big challenge right there: to last long enough.
