"Built not Bought". I've a sticker on the back mudguard of my 1978 GL1000 that has those very words. Had the bike 20 years, bought as a rotten rancid wreck. Been on the road for the last 19 years,I love it. Confuses younger riders who've never seen a Gold Wing that's not covered in plastic. I was going to put Subaru badges on the tank, really confuse them.

Nice Job! I can appreciate the work involved as i'm halfway through a full nut and bolt rebuild of my 87 FZR1000, bought during the covid debacle as a project. It arrived as a neglected, cosmetically challenged, corroded mess, that had been down the road on both sides, pushed into a shed and forgotten. Thousands of $$ later and i'm just about to assemble the fully reconditioned engine. Its been a labour of love (and patience) as parts for these aren't as readily available as they are for the later EXUP models, as they only made them for 2 years before the completely revamped 89 EXUP came out. Eighties bikes is what floats my boat, as its a time i was young and working in the industry and the pace of development was at fever pitch, with manufactures developing and selling an eclectic range of models, (not all of them successful😏) It was a great time to be in the industry.

@@barebonesmc The 89 EXUP is an awesome bike, I almost bought one to restore, but then the 87 popped up, Ive got a soft spot for the 1st gen as they were raced to great effect in NZ and Australia in 87/88, by the time the EXUP came along the OW01 had taken over racing duties. Ive bought parts from all over the world for my FZR but there is one last part i just cannot find, and that is a headlight fairing, it is proving very difficult to track down.

I fitted a new Laverda supplied stainless system with the huge balance pipe , which took six months to arrive and six hours to shoe horn together . I hated the system as the side ground clearance was lessened big style . It sounded ok . I bought the bike with a two into one system which had been put together by previous owners , possibly Merlin motorcycles at Thornbury . Hi Andy ! That system sounded superb and gave massive clearance which the bike can easily handle . The SF2 , which this one seems to be , was very very stiff and handled really well . I could use the front brakes in corners no problem . My rear brakes had worn pivots , which I never got round to sort out ....never needed rear anchors anyway ! Well a bit maybe on occasion . Loved my SF2 . I fitted SFC cams , second hand ( and way of pear shaped ! Valves kept open longer than standard ) , and SFC pistons . I had to remove the accelerator jets as the front end would lift unpredictably and wanted to save on washing my gacks . Enjoy , I am sure you will , I am jealous ! ... but fit a balance pipe or two into one and take of the side stand , the main stand is so easy to use , so you save weight and gain clearance . lol . Oh , and fit electronic ignition , you know it will be worthwhile .

That’s rather special. YT didn’t notify me so I missed this. So here I am awake in the middle of the night again getting my vicarious bike fix from my virtual biker buddies. Really need to see this one in person. It’s a gorgeous one off. I guess my first question is “alloy spokes”? That’s a new one. Have you considered casting a pair of indicators? If you coat the ones you have in a hard wax, that might add sufficient extra material for later polishing. This is only my nocturnal theory mind you. Not sure how the best bronze forgers do it…👀 Anyway, thank you for sharing your classic orange Italian baby. A keeper for sure. Peace

@@G58 the 93 is a looker though 🙂 of all the 4 wheelers ive owned, i had a 99 that only comes second to a tuned Alfa i had for a while (then wrote off, as all good Alfas should end lol) but the 99 was a tank. i used to take it rallying through the woods as at the time i had access to about 200 acres of thick forestry to play in, all the bodywork was double skinned and the metal so much thicker than other cars of its day, a fully sorted single carb version of the Triumph 1850 engine used in the Dolomite, and oh how well they sorted that engine. I had an 1850 Dolomite and loved it, but god it was temperamental, Saab kept all the good points and just made it work better, happy days 🙂

What a great project! I know a few peoplle who've owned it once. I remember that several years ago, the ground plate for points in the ignition were out of stock. With no aftermarket parts available, this friend almost gave up on the bike. Donn't know, If and how she ever got it fixed or had to sell the bike. While you could have the plate itself machined, one large issue would have been to find a capacitor to be welded on to the plate.

Awesome! Great sound, great looking and that very special feeling you get from riding something you've brought back to life after years of being in boxes, all add up to extremely satisfying riding👍. The bit that always frustrates me is trying to get that nice polished look to ALL the exposed aluminium and oh my god! There's so much total area of it and so many awkward to get into little pockets and hollows that you've just got to do thoroughly or you'll never feel happy with them. That's the trouble with bikes, they may be smaller than a car but, they're like if a car was turned inside out and you had to try and make that look shiny and pretty, EVERYTHING is exposed and so much fine fiddly stuff to wear out your elbows polishing. That will be a bike you'll have every right and reason to feel very special while riding it. Great work, it's looking gorgeous❤.

I could reminisce and feel that same feeling, a mixture of "I so hope I'm not chasing my tail and every time I think I've got it right, something else, deeper in the engine goes wrong" crossed with that great feeling of satisfaction, especially that first time you hear her fire up, rough running or not, then that great feeling when you're all sorted, registered and a real road warrior back from the dead.

@@barebonesmc Just a possibly, maybe, partly useful tip. I cleaned up and made shiny(ish) some old rough cast casings once while experimenting, pretty reasonably successfully using a cheap sand blaster that I could run off my compressor using corn flour. It's a bit difficult to feed it to it evenly but, it didn't damage or abrade it at all and left the cast finish looking like it had just come out of casting yet clean and fairly shiny. There's probably even better mediums or methods and this one leaves you a horrible mess but, it did bring it up surprisingly well. I wouldn't use real grit or sand as they would eat at the surface, this kept it looking how it should yet shinier. I was experimenting trying to find the best way to deal with those rough bits like cooling fins etc and there's bound to be better, easier ways but, it did work the best of the ones I tried.
