Jason it is similar in concept to the fretless banjo. On a fretless banjo (which relatively few people play, much less master) since the fingerboard is naked so to speak, you can slide the bridge that floats between the five strings and the drum head back and forth to make the overall scale length longer or shorter. But the design of a banjo bridge is limited in that it always moves all five string scales at once, and to the same distance. On the gayageum however, Luna has exponentially more flexibility, because each of the strings has its own floating bridge. She owns a ridiculous number of gayageums with varying numbers of strings. The ones she uses most have 21. So you can imagine that 21 strings with instantly customizable scale lengths offer a boat load of possibilities with that instrument just by adjusting those bridge pieces! :)
