HoMM2's conflict has its story set up as good vs. evil, with Knight, Wizard & Sorceress factions as the good guys and Barbarian, Warlock & Necromancer factions as the evil guys, but the choice of quotes in each faction's theme track pokes fun at the mere notion. Warlocks' theme takes its quote from Thus Spake Zarathustra, from the scene where the titular prophet emerges from his hermitage and descends back into the "masses" to teach them wisdom. An old wiseman sees Zarathustra's madness and mentions that he is setting fire to the world. The Warlocks in HoMM2 come off as evil power-hungry wizards but comparing them to Zarathustra's destructive fervor and blind compassion highlights how the Warlocks are actually -sharing- their uninhibited magic and power with the world. The Wizards and Sorceresses (of the good side) keep their secrets, with the former's literal ivory towers and the latter's weird mystery cults, but the Warlocks will revel in their miracles without shame. Anybody can become powerful like the Warlocks if they stop caring about old morals or traditions like the Warlocks... whether this unleashed truth and power will destroy the world is not their concern. The good factions are content to keep things the way they are and make sure everything remains stagnant. The evil factions are courageous enough to at least -try- something. They are doing these insane things so that something could be made better than they used to be. Are they not bringing more good to the world?

They were too strong for their own good. And then some of them got reshuffled into OTHER factions again in HoMM4. I think i remember Tarnum in the barbarian campaign even commented on this regarding centaurs...

Sorceress castle has a very similar architectural style to this, though it feels more Greek/Cretan based mythological creatures while the sorceress seems to be based on Celtic or Gaelic ones.

​@@SimoDahlia I had that version as well. Actually I find the music assignment in that version better in general than in this apparently more common version. Especially the necromancer theme was a better fit. In my opinion the right assignment should be (referring to the themes in the common version): Sorceress town: Sorceress theme (that one fits only there if you ask me) Warlock town: Necromancer theme Wizard town: Warlock theme (this theme in the vid here) Barbarian town: Wizard theme Knight town: Knight theme Necromancer town: Barbarian theme

Back when Warlocks had the "beast" army. Gargoyles (Went to Wizards in 3 and beyond) Griffins (3 and beyond) Hydras bounced around, Centaurs to other factions in 3 and beyond. They became the "Dungeon" and then Dark Elves

This felt like a weird and unique town... It has like a little bit of a bunch of creatures from a bunch of different HoMM3 cities... Centaur and green dragons from the nature city, gargoyles from the snow city, griffons from the human city, minotaur from the subterranean city and hydras from the swamp city... All united living in cool stone architecture and hedge mazes and such...

As much as I like the Heroes 3, the castles in H2 were much better thematically (and musically!). The necromancer that creates undead, a warlock, that makes monsters and the greenskin barbarian - are such recognizable archetypes!
