I just want to thank Tom the Taxi Driver for responding to an email I sent him via his website. I thought I had been ripped off for taking a taxi from Heathrow T5 to the Hilton T5 hotel. Tom took the time to respond, said he understood my concern and explained why the cost was so high. This video is an example of what taxi drivers have to go through at Heathrow which visitors don't know about, so thank you, Tom. I hope we can meet next time I'm back in London!

How much did you get charged
@thk1846 ай бұрын
@@GuineaPig91 30 pounds.
@greigs93846 ай бұрын
Yep, fixed price as it’s outside the TFL licensing area. The FP price was agreed between the drivers, HAL and TfL. Shuttle buses are also available but last time I checked they’re about £10 a head and you go via a lot of other hotels to get there. Minicabs will charge what they like, might be cheaper, might be more expensive
@thk1846 ай бұрын
@@greigs9384 I'll keep this short. I was trying to avoid the Hoppa buses and chose to use a taxi instead. The guy who was coordinating taxis told me it would be 15 pounds. That's why I was surprised it cost double for a 4-mile drive. No matter what, he got a tip because he explained the costs but double-checked with Tom if it was reasonable and he explained it very well. Why airport hotels at Heathrow don't have their own shuttles is beyond me, but am sure someone can answer that. But I really appreciate Tom answering my email.
@seprishere6 ай бұрын
@@greigs9384 The shuttle bus fare seems ridiculous, at least compared with normal London bus fare of £1.75 or the maximum England bus fare of £2.00. (Wales doesn't adhere to that, so my two singles were £2.30 each!)

It would be very interesting to see how one day of only ranking compares to one day of hailing (minus airports & train stations). Keep up the good videos mate.

Hi Tom, regarding the illegal pop rank at Vic hole in wall. I’ve been out for 25 years & I will pick up in front of the pop up in Praed st without a worry! Because I play by the rules. I wouldn’t ask the driver or passenger about it. I don’t care for what reason he’s there, he’s not legally ranking, it your job with a clear conscience. Also, with the Vito on Picc, he’s another idiot making you uncomfortable and he’s wrong and should be definitely staying behind. Your point about small jobs being the most profitable is obviously 100% correct. I’ve been telling friends since day 1 & they invariably think I’m an idiot and they all want long jobs. Great vid as always and love your outlook and positivity about our trade.

The fairs Fares are for those areas beyond the m25 but aren’t far enough to be logged out the system so Slough Windsor Staines Egham Might be a few more but they’re the ones which spring to mind Reason being we can refuse jobs that go outside the GLA so these jobs would never get covered without the incentive of £40/£45 journeys. Surrey is also one you can refuse aswell if the journey is over 20 miles? I think or takes longer than an hour to complete.

If I would become a Dutch taxi driver, I want a London taxi cab but with the steer on the left side. To bad, those cars aren't made for outside of the UK. On the other hand, can you help customers get in faster and do you just have to get used to looking differently while driving? How is your experience driving outside the UK?
@bengoacher44556 ай бұрын
Controversial but is this a case of too many taxis making it MORE expensive? If you had half the number of Taxis going to Heathrow, you'd have half the wait time, and then you could charge less for your services. Instead of paying for the trip, plus 3 hours of you waiting in the feeder, the customer would pay for the trip and 1 hour in the feeder, for example. Everyone is a winner in that respect because the fares are cheaper, you spend less time waiting around, and you make just as much money. The only issue I can see is if the number of people going to Heathrow significantly outstrips the number of people leaving Heathrow, and taxis have to do empty trips back from Heathrow.
@car_tar38826 ай бұрын
In my opinion not as a driver the Piccadilly should get 2 extra tubes and run 24/7 that way the cab operations would take place in a more distributed manner

@BigALuk336 ай бұрын
As far as I know, Toms comment at 4:15 isn't 100% accurate. If you get at the terminals at Heathrow a local job you have exactly 60mins from the moment you enter the rank at the terminal to getting back to the same terminal rank. If you can do this you don't need to go back through the feeder parks. The taxi readers will tell you how much time you have left within that 60minute window. Not sure how many times you can do this...but my mate does Heathrow a lot and it always causes him stress if he can drop off and get back within the 60 minutes window 😮

If waiting 2-3 hours in the feeder park, how much of a ride is required to breakeven (for wait and ride)?
@speedstyle.5 ай бұрын
There's no definitive answer, it depends how much work is available elsewhere. If you got lucky in central, then no Heathrow job could make up for 10+ minimum charges. If you wasted mileage driving back in and around to only get a couple, then almost any Heathrow job would be better. It doesn't take too much to break even on the actual costs (taxi/fuel) and there's no fixed personal cost (income) so the question is just whether you could be getting more. In the video he also took the time to eat, clean and do some paperwork - predictable downtime can 'cost' less than waiting around empty.
