i love this "inside the cab" genre. amazing that even after your shift you go home and do yet more knowledge-based work, analysing your own performance that day. do you actually keep a "logbook" of journey start end end points during the shift or do it from memory and video file later? dunno why you might need a logbook but maybe for TFL or the taxman. could be done by GPS automatically nowadays
@TomtheTaxiDriver

No log books, but as you say, the meter/card payment usually has a modem attached so that data is somewhere. I would really like to build some kind of database that shows the probability of getting a job in a certain area. I mean the data is all there, it's just extracting it.

@@TomtheTaxiDriver i was thinking the same thing. get a "big data" analysis done of pickup points and times, correlated with destination profitability to let you know where to hang out and whether it's worth joining a rank at a particular time. the maths underlying it would be easy. but then i figured you guys already do that all in your head anyway based on experience and gut feel, or tip-offs from other cabbies

As a cabbie it's good to hear you little facts about the history of the streets. Those guys probably spent over £50 each on a night out and there haggling you for £5 each , let them jog on , don't want or need people like that anywhere near me in the cab . I did 12 years in night taxi in the midwest US in a college town. Nowhere near the territory or population you deal with, but the business was steady to busy and I honestly liked that job the best I ever had. Done with it in 2012, when the gig apps ruined the job. I miss it and aside from the sites, what you're describing is exactly what I did in the job. Nobody tested but I had the knowledge for the local area. Great job.

That took me back Tom. I did 37 years on nights as a London cabman- 1979 to 2016. I reckon I got out and moved to Cornwall just in time. Not so much Uber, (bad enough) but the dreaded cycle lanes and traditionally one way streets becoming two way just mess with the brain. I visit London from time to time and I can’t believe I put up with all that for so long. I do miss many aspects of the job, in the main the people I met were great - a few wrong ‘uns of course. Like the couple I left standing at the kerb because I had a bad feeling about them. They went on to murder the less cautious cabbie that took them to Tottenham. Always trust your instincts - its better to be judged by twelve than carried by six. Be Lucky mate, and keep those doors locked.

Afternoon greetings Tom. May i compliment yourself and your peers for your service to the fare-paying public. I have first-hand experience, lasting7 years, of the honesty displayed by your peers during a secondment in the Big Smoke. Every Sunday evening, and Friday evening, i travelled from central London to King’s Cross Railway Station to my home in Yorkshire. As we can imagine, i had a detailed knowledge of the route; and i am honoured to say, in the 7 years, not once did a cabbie deviate from the route. Please continue to serve the public and we are most grateful. Kind regards.

my general rules are, I do not pick people up who run into the road. I do not pick people up who need a lamp post to keep them upright. I do not take passengers who need someone else to help them into the cab and leave them with me (it means I will have to help them out) I do turn my light off when a drive past certain Edinburgh Pubs, I'm sure you know pubs like this Tom. Now when it comes to fixed price work, Edinburgh is busy I do not discount as it usually means uber are surcharging. if it's quiet i will give a discount of about 15% maybe 20% if it's really quiet. I'd rather not do the job than do it stupid cheap, (especially with the price of fuel these days) love the videos, be lucky.

Probably your best video yet. Always amazing watching the KOL in action, job by job. If the late lady had got in a private hire vehicle, there’s no way that a nav would have routed her around the back of the National Gallery like that, hence why London’s Taxi drivers will never be bettered. Love the contrast from the Euston to Kings Cross job to the one to Ascot in the end. These videos give students like myself a positive incentive to keep going on the KOL… nice one

Lots of fun watching this. Drove in Chicago for 7 years in College and after PT. Lots of things the same. Checking the lines at the train and bus stations and if you got anywhere near the 2 airports, you went in and checked. Spot on on your comment, everything died between 8 and 10. We also had a list of the plays, operas, etc and the times they got out. We always held you London fellows in the deepest respect. How do you manage all those streets with similar names? I was born in Chicago and knew the city well. However, many drivers knew next to nothing and learned on the job. Yellow cabs training 3 hours riding with an experience driver and then out you go. At one time the government called cab driving the most dangerous job in the United States. Probably true. Every driver on my shift was robbed at least once, except me. In the late 70's we had 13 drivers killed in one year across the city. It seems, at least in your videos, that it is a lot more relaxed. You had to be on alert constantly and if you got careless, you paid. Do you guys have Red Zones? These are areas we just wouldn't go. We had the legal right to refuse a load, do you? You call them "jobs", we called them loads or flags. I believe probably all the large cities in US are about the same. And there was a definite negative stigma to cab driving from the public. We were seen as the bottom of the barrel in the workforce. The president of Checker, the second largest company, once said on the news, "No one raises their kids to be cab drivers." I personally had over 5 years of college and in my company we had over 100 degrees and over 90 secondary

Really interesting observations and thanks for the insights! London taxis are adored by many by loathed by others. I think part of this is appreciation for The Knowledge (something this channel tries to highlight) and people who frequently get in taxis and realise that there is generally such a high standard across every single driver. There still are some red flags of areas in London, but nothing like the drivers would have had decades ago. The main comment I get from drivers who have been working for many years in London, is that there was certain areas you generally wouldn’t want to go to, whereas now we are relatively lucky that it doesn’t happen. Uber has also helped in some ways as they may be taking the lower paying/lower respecting customers. Those who might be incredibly drunk or abusive.

Cabbie karma. Love this saying, Tom 😎👍🏻 This made me want to visit London again but always remember why my dad, when making a deliver to London from Liverpool, we would leave so early in the morning. Traffic lol Love this insight into your shift. Take it easy out there and stay safe 🙏🏻❤️

1:09 @Tom the Taxi Driver Where you say about The Royal Collage of Physicians this traffic island and corner is famous on You Tube. It is also on google maps and is Called "Gandalf Corner" The reason for this traffic going the other way can build up and some drivers decide to try and turn right by going the wrong side of the Island. So another You tube channel has had a few videos go viral showing this.
