Total Thyroidectomy for benign lesions is too risky. And, should only be performed by surgeons who are very experienced in Thyroid Surgery. Total resection may be advisable only in malignant conditions as the advantages offset the danger of complications to justify it. General Surgeons should limit themselves only to hemthyroidectomy or subtotal or near total procedures.
