You are a heaven sent! I am studying for a math teaching exam and this is going to save my life! Thank you!!

One warning you should include: The calculator will estimate a derivative even if one doesn't exist. For example, on the function y = |x| at x=0 the derivative doesn't exist because of the sharp turn (left and right limits of the difference quotient aren't equal). However, the calculator will tell you the derivative is zero there. This could lead into an interesting discussion of numerical analysis.

+ssgcmwatsonusa Good point about that. As far as I can tell, the reason that this happens is that the most efficient formulas for estimating the derivative of function numerically about a point are based on differences of function values symmetric about that point. These are most likely included in the calculator's algorithm for numerical differentiation, and so, since the absolute value function is symmetric about zero, symmetric differences about zero will be zero, and thus so is the reported derivative.

I bought a TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition because of this video. I like how it tells you what to fill in unlike the TI-83 I already own where it was more like a function. However when I received my calculator today I hit [math] and choose 8: nderive and it is a function just like TI-83. Is there a setting or an update or what to get it to look like this one?

Nevermind I just tried something and it works right now. Sorry.
