We have to pay taxes or a fee to do pretty much anything. I can't even go into a National Park nature area here and walk around for less than a $30 fee. It sucks being ruled by foreigners. Well Tibet is in a difficult position because it's technically been part of the Chinese Empire since the late 1600s And conquest and formal control was established by the Chinese in 1720, Albeit during a brutal sacking of Lasha and nearly burning the entire city to the ground So understand this isn't me defending the Chinese but to help others understand that their historic claim to the land does have some international legal merit because they have been the rulers of the land for over 250 years Now to be fair the Right of Conquest isn't allowed anymore by international law ever since 1949 but that's neither here nor there and not helpful in Tibet's current situation IMO though they aren't worthy to the claim, because of how badly the Tibetans have been treated as a result of those 250 years and the subsequent half century since Chinese control was reestablished in 1953 But unfortunately Tibet finds itself in a very similar position to Taiwan where it's not a legally recognized country and even worse is that unlike Taiwan who was at one point given a seat at the UN, Tibet never had such a luxury Meaning there's no historical legacy within the recent global world order that Tibet can point to and therefore seek help in regard to it's situation

I deeply respect you guys pointing out the positive aspects of Chinese rule in Tibet without excusing China's brutality and oppression over the Tibetans. Another thing the CCP did that was good for Tibet was end slavery. Slavery was perfectly legal in Tibet prior to the Chinese invasion and subsequent banning of slavery. An uncomfortable number of the original rebels were slave owners protecting their "property". But now China exploits Tibetan workers and resources (not as bad as literal slavery, but still not any good), and I doubt modern Tibet would reinstate slavery if they gained independence today. China has done good things for Tibet, lots of imperialist/colonial powers did good things for their subjects; I just wish the bad things didn't overshadow the positives...
@qiandeng1296 Жыл бұрын
It was what happens after colonial wars and what can be viewed as a civil war. After English and Russia designs in the region along with a LITERAL English invasion China is bound to respond by ending the former informal relationship and just bring Tibet into China proper, or should it just sit idly by and watch as the English / Russians eventually take over and cause eventually more problems? Also Simon glossed over over 20 years(yes, 20 years!) of CIA covert militarize funding program for Tibet which would have contributed to a lot of violence. Doesn't help when China itself was in a chaotic wars/social/government/institution transition phase and things got nasty. However I challenge your assertion that China is exploiting Tibetan workers nowadays. Tibetans treated as full citizens and are offered full modern education but the long herder and temple-llama dominated tradition is in the way of Tibetans acquire modern skills for better businesses and jobs, so it's more like people stuck in old tradition mindset missed the education opportunities and end up only employable in mostly low quality labor jobs, Tibetans who took full advantage of education offering are just as likely as any other Chinese to get into middle-higher class. That's why nowadays you hear the usual exaggerated propaganda about Chinese force brainwashing/cultural genocide school programs which in reality is just government try to push Tibetans into education programs to get out of herder and monastery life to acquire skills for better job opportunities.

We don’t even have to go back that far to the Egyptians, ancient Native Americans, Aztecs, Vikings, etc. I’m sure if we had better archeological technology we’d find plenty of signs of hostility tens of thousands of years ago just like we see in primates today. This video covered the 1904 British India invasion of Tibet, but it didn't cover all the others in the late 19th century. The British would invade Tibet, slaughter Tibetans, loot, rape, and then they would approach the government of Tibet, which was the Qing dynasty of China, and demand ransom to leave, which the Qing always paid. It's also interesting how Simon seems to have not bothered to study Tibetan history at all with his opening remarks. Tibet has seldom been peaceful historically. Despite this, they were largely left alone by China until they invaded China following the Tang Civil War and attempted to conquer vast swaths of Chinese territory. This forced China to view Tibet as a threat to be neutralized. Following that invasion, Tibet has always been under some form of Chinese governance, hence why they are peaceful now.

As a Chinese ethnic individual, allow me to point out two things that I've mentioned on a Sideproject video that I feel are worth repeating here: 1) China and Tibet has had a... shall we say, bad history that stretches all the way back to the Tibetan Empire. During the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907AD) the two countries were in frequent military struggles against each other, and a particular fort by the name of Stone Castle City (石堡城), an extremely well-defended fortification held by the Tibetan Empire, saw a near constant stream of Tang casualties, while Tibetan cavalry raiders preyed upon the farmlands in and around what is now Qing'Hai Province. Traditionally, the Chinese government has viewed all outside forces that raided Chinese lands as barbarians that must either be slaughtered down to the last child, or fully assimilated such that no thread of their original culture remains (and as we can see is still being implemented in Tibet right now), the fact that Tibet rejected their "fate" of death or assimilation marked its people in the brain of China as being tainted with the gravest of sins. This could go some way to explain why the Tibetan people sees such extreme oppression under Chinese rule, China is simply "settling the debt of blood and hatred" that has been building for over a millennia. 2) Tibet's geography is, in every way, not in its own favor while also, in every way, in China's favor. As of right now, the only economically viable means of reaching anywhere in Tibet is via the Qinghai-Tibet railway, the so-called "Sky Road", that connects the east of Tibet to the western heartlands of China. To its north lies the deserts and badlands of the Gobi while its south and west are blocked in entirely by the Himalayans. Any outside power that attempts to aid Tibet materially faces the daunting task of sending planes over the Himalayans or smuggling an armed convoy through the Gobi, neither of which are overly viable or optimistic. Tibet is so trapped by their location that regardless of whether it bows its head to China is irrelevant, it sits in the middle of China's palm and China can do whatever it damn well pleases whenever it damn well pleases, there is simply nowhere for Tibet to turn, and nowhere to run.
