Has this surgery last week and my knee is so swollen it was hard to see my knee cap. I can put weight on the bad foot but it’s hard to lock my knee with confidence. I hope this reassures others during their recovery and I’m incredibly grateful for the amazing doctors and technology.

Wow....amazing!! I had this performed on my right and left tibias(2 broke legs..right tibia broke in 3 places and shattered with a foot drop.) In 2001, I was hit by a drunk driver and carried a block. I woke up 2 days later to find myself in the trauma unit with staples in my knees. I was in a whell chair for 8months. 3 surgeries on my right tibia. I am fully mobile today(slightly bow legged). I never knew how it was performed, watching this amazed me.

Motorcycle accident at 04/25/19: Lady turned left into me when I had the green signal so it was pretty much a head on collision at 45mph. Left Tibia and Fibula open fracture and my right knee was f'ed. Got surgery on both legs, had full weight bearing from day 1. I also have non weight bearing on my right knee so anything I do, I have to only rely on my broken leg to carry my 190lb body. A month later, it doesn't pain at all at the place where it broke, it pains a lot at the ankle for some reason tho, still can't stand on one leg or crouch, but all things considered I'm lucky I didn't have my leg amputated. I got a lot of my feeling back and the numbness is almost gone except for a bit in my ankle and the left part of my leg where the car directly hit my leg. I will post updated if u guys want. Yeah yeah I know I'm late here xD

Very similar to my situation. Car turned left across me, hit them head on at 50 km/h. Open right tib/fib fracture, broken left ankle. Had the rod installed the day after the crash. It's been three weeks since the crash, I've been off both of my feet the whole time. Swelling and bruising is basically done, except I've got a good amount of numbness in a 3" wide strip of my inner right thigh from just below my groin to my knee, but nothing crazy otherwise. My first post-surgery followup is tomorrow. Hopefully I can get these plaster half/slabs replaced with air boots. Hope you healed up well!

Aaron Turner yeah man I'm doing great! The fracture hadn't healed properly the last year so I had to go for a resurgery on December and get a bigger rod installed. But other than that, an year later, it's still not fully healed. I can jognsloely but shouldn't, I can't walk for long periods of time past 30-40 mins. It's a great improvement considering I thought I could never walk again. Things are supposed to get better over the next 3 years and I should be able to make a full recovery.coming to the numbness, I had that too, it's probably because of the block/anaesthesia. It's gone now almost non existent. However the place where the bone came out in my left leg, was fairly close to the ankle, like 4.5 inches above the ankle. From that down, the side that the bone came out is still numb and I can't feel it properly. Actually scratch that I think I'm regaining feeling, the last time I checked it was still numb but I can feel it substantially more! All I have to say is, man be chill, bones break and they reattach. You got this brother, stay strong and ride again!!! :D

I broke my Tibia & Fibula clean in Aug 2012 at Soccer, its been 9.5 months and it hurts to kneel on my knee. The problem is they cut through the pad below your knee which has a lot of nerves in it resulting in 2/3 of people having pain. A Rod inserted with a knee cut is a better outcome cause the bone heals very straight. A plaster cast with a severe bone break, the % of a straight heal is much lower. Overall yeah your knee may hurt when kneeling but you'll walk better for the rest of your life.

I'm glad he recovered well. I found IM rod removal surgery to be a cakewalk compared to having the rod hammered in (the pain was about half as bad as the initial surgery, roughly speaking). When I had my IM rod in, winter was endless pain deep in the bone. I don't have it anymore, and now the pain is somewhat less severe in the cold. It was worth it, for me, but everyone may vary.

Had this surgery back in 2003 / 2004 in my right leg. Still have not taken out the rod or any screws. I have reduced feeling on the right side of the main scar and my whole thigh. Before the surgery i had a glass fiber cast in a strange angle to try and correctly heal my broken bones. I think that affected the way my tibia grew after the operation so my foot is actually pointing a few degrees outwards. My right knee is definitely weaker and more fragile than the left, but i'm still going strong. No real pain or discomfort in daily life other than be aware not to push my right knee too much.

I am 25 years old & I broke my tibia & fibula on 11-11-11 at 9pm, then I had this surgery the following day. . . The doctors told me that the rod didn't need to be removed, unless it becomes infected or something. So far it's been 10 months. I'm doing well, it gets sore every once & a while, but I believe it's more so from the loss of muscle, If I keep building the muscle, i'll be fine . . So to the adults needing to know, within a year, with some personal rehab, you will be fine.

Thanks for your feedback :) My feeling in my foot was still numb in areas but very slowly coming back, I had some follow up surgery on my FHL tendon which had become scarred and reduced in length causing my toes to curl over so I couldn't walk properly. Since the follow up surgery 7 weeks ago, some of the feeling in my foot which I had got back went numb again. My nerve got stretched but didn't break so I'll hopefully get most of it back. Has your feeling progressed much in the past 9.5 months?

I had this surgery done in December of 2010. Had the rod and screws removed in 2012. About half of my foot is very numb, and my orthopedist told me it will never get better; the nerves have been severed. My knee has an unusual combination of numbness and pain. You may never recover normal sensation in your foot; I won't, at least. I hope you do, though. Good luck.

I wish I'd never gotten this surgery. I have extensive nerve damage around my knee where the incision was made, which will never improve (surgery was over 2 years ago). Had the rod removed--helped the deep bone pain I was experiencing, but the knee is FUBAR and always will be. The risk of nerve damage and permanent knee pain/numbness is a serious risk of tibial IM rodding that some surgeons neglect to discuss with their patients when choosing treatment for a tibial fracture.

Been 29 days since I had this procedure for a closed tibiofibular fracture. I broke both bones doing gymnastics. The surgeon said this type of nailing is a slightly inferior procedure due to the type of nail and the insertion point. There's another type of nail which is inserted at a different area near the knee that is said to carry less risk of chronic pain afterwards, but the hospital couldn't source that nail for me in time (I don't know what it's called, but the insertion site was slightly above the kneecap and more towards the outside of the leg, if I remember correctly). Everything seems fine so far though. I was allowed to weight-bear fully straight after the surgery and I'm walking almost normally now without using crutches. Ankle and knee joint still have a slightly reduced range of motion but have been improving and are currently at about 90-95%. There's a little bit of soreness around the area where the fibula broke; apparently it's common practice in hospitals to not do anything to fix the fibula because the tibia carries all the weight. It's worrying, but the physiotherapist assured me that if I keep walking on it the compression force will lead both fibula and tibia to grow back together completely. I am using a calf brace that I got for myself just to have extra support - it also helps keep the leg a bit warmer as it has become extra sensitive to cold. I also have some numbness at the incision site where the surgeons had to go in to realign my bones. Apparently the numbness might be permanent, but I've been advised that massaging that area can help in getting sensation back. They also said that I will be able to get back to gymnastics with full use of my leg, including running and tumbling, so I assume the bones will heal back strong enough to be able to take that sort of impact (up to 17x body weight for landings in gymnastics). I believe it, because I've seen other gymnasts do it: Samir Aït Saïd had almost exactly the same fracture I have and the same tibial nail treatment and got back to international competitive gymnastics. Not that I'm competing on that level, but it's good to see someone who's been there recover successfully. What I think has really helped me so far is: * keeping my stress levels down, * massaging arnica cream into my leg, * eating lots of fruit, fish, vegetables (lots of broccoli and mushrooms, no spinach or sweet potatoes, check the science on fracture nutrients!), Greek yogurt, * taking vitamin D supplements, * magnesium baths, and * exercise, as far as possible. Oh, and * all death metal, all the time... Every day the bones feel a little stronger. I haven't used any painkillers for at least a week, and when I did it was 1-2 Excedrin in a day max. I started on physiotherapy two days ago, but I had been doing a little bit of exercise already before that. If you're stuck on what CV you can do while recovering, please check Caroline Jordan's "chair cardio" - it's great! So far I've been really glad about this nail, because having to sit immobile in a cast for weeks or even months would have caused much more loss of strength than the break alone. This procedure allowed me to be mobile again straight away. And as a bonus I now also get to say I'm extra metal. \m/

@@Infinity364 Thank you :) Also does the nail and/or screws cause problems while exercising?
@Infinity364
@Infinity364 Жыл бұрын
@Sairaj Shrigiri The screws were causing me issues with range of motion and general stiffness in the knee and ankle joints. For example, there were some yoga poses I couldn't do because of the knee screws - like tree pose, or any other poses where the knee needs to be bent and turned outwards. The screw in the front of my ankle made it impossible to use that leg with the leg extension machine in the gym and also caused other issues, like pain when wearing motorcycle boots and even tight socks and leggings. Basically, anything pressing on it hurt. And landing from tumbling moves, sometimes that ankle would really hurt as well for a good ten minutes. That's why I had them taken out. As it turned out, the ankle screw had also come loose. I still got acute ankle pain straight after certain tumbling moves on the floor at the site of the ankle screw hole for about six, seven months after screw extraction, but that's almost completely gone now. Thankfully the nail itself has never caused any problems.

It's been 14 weeks post-op and I still have pain. I think I'm going to have knee problems too, because that's where they had to cut through tendons in the knee to get to the tibia and drill that long titanium rod in. I also have a locking pin on the left side of my right knee. That still gives me a lot pain and I can take pain. I had double back surgery in 2009. They cut in four places on my leg. I hate it. I also still have that hump in my leg where I broke it. I have the Airwalker Boot too.

I had this surgery, but tibia fracture was above the ankle & I lost about an inch of my tibia. As it hadn't healed in over 1 year, they went back in & re-rodded it using a nail with more 'grooves', removed the 'bone fluff' (probably brain injury related) at the broken ends of the tibia & grafted a section of my fibula in the gap of the tibia. End result; tibia complete, rod doing fine. Fibula; meh, the tibia does the work of holding the body up & the rod effectively takes on the job of the fiblula. So, I'm walking (about 3 miles a week, on a hill), can stand one legged on it. Can drive just fine & it is the Rt calf. Can't run, but likely that has more to do with the brain injury than the broken leg. The patient's final recovery is entirely individual though, so anything anyone, even MDs, tell you is purely conjecture.

Has anyone had a knee replacement after having the rod in tibia for years? I'm eventually going to need a totally knee replacement because of the rod. I'm curious on how the knee replacement is handled when there is no real bone on the tibia side. About a year and a half after rod was inserted they tried to remove it but no success. Based on my experience, take the plate surgery if at all possible instead of the nailing as the risk for chronic anterior knee pain is much too great. Going through the knee is much too invasive. Although my break was lower towards the ankle. Do your research, post surgery intramedullary nailing chronic knee pain, there’s plenty of data, just google it. I’ve got both because they went for the nailing of my tibia but, the break was too low and the guide wire didn’t go through the lower part of the bone. So they had to plate it. It worked thankfully but, my knee has not been the same and it hurts bad at times and especially after a lot of physical exercise which is a total bummer. There’s still a lot of scar tissue from the cut and numbness as well, super lame and this was over 10 years ago. Cutting through tendons or sliding them over then drilling and messing with a super important joint seems like a good idea, right? What could go wrong?! Please always ask what are drawbacks to any procedure and options. Benefits/drawbacks. Knee pain sucks especially for an unnecessary surgery. Maybe it’s been pushed by a medical sales companies to sell their nails, I don’t know. The plate was fine, in my opinion there was no reason to muck the knee through this surgery. Best of luck to you. Hope this helps someone in the future. -Nick If you know how fix and help the knee after this terrible surgery please let me know thanks.

If you were to have another injury in the future eg. car accident, sporting injury, to the extent where your leg would normally have broken again, the rod could bend and the bone around would shatter causing a major injury. If the rod bent, it would be difficult to slide out so they would have to cut it into pieces I imagine.

I fractured my tibia and fibula 9 weeks ago and had a plate and 6 screws inserted, the cast has been off 3 weeks but my foot is still swelling when I use crutches(no weight bearing) and my instep has no sensation (which concerns me). Also my foot is stiff and not flexible and I'm still having pain, is this normal? What exercises can I do to strengthen my foot?

Hi...hope you get this..my sister just broke her leg and had this surgery, pin down the length of her tibia. Did you perhaps use a knee scooter in recovery, or do you think putting weight on the knee would be bad given that the rod went through the knee? I'm contemplating getting a knee scooter for my sister's recovery. Is a knee scooter a good idea?

about 8 weeks ago i was in a motbike crash and broke both legs and my shoulder, this was one of the operations i had done and so far although im not walking yet, this operation is the one that has recovered the quickest. i have full bending movement in the leg but obviously lost alot of muscle so strength is an issue. my other operations were 3 ligaments were re-attached on my left knee using hamstrings from both my right and left leg. this took 2 operations and the other was my shoulder.

+Wilton Batiquin Just recovering from just this operation. What I was told, is the Tibia is the important weight bearing bone, the Fibula isn't really cared about, they set it and leave it to heal by itself. Its the reason they have me wearing one of those 'moonboots'. Its not really important to the functioning of the leg how the fibula heals.

Hi I broke my Tibia and Fibula 2 weeks ago and have had a Tibia nail inserted down the Tibia bone. They haven't touched my broken Fibula, which looking at the Xrays doesn't line up more than 50%. Will the Fibula line itself back up? I do want it back to 100%. I don't understand why the surgeon didn't put a plate on it, weight bearing or not surely if you can get it back to where it should be they would.

It took me personally 3 months to get around without my crutches & cane . . But give the bone time to heal, don't force it. But you'll know when it's time, & once it happens start slow & from there work on building the muscle back & stretching. & make sure you don't drag your leg, work properly, that way you develop a gimp. . . That'll really help a lot with walking.

>Its healing well but I lost a lot of feeling in the left side of my foot from the surgery, wondering if that feeling will come back or not it seems the surgeon wont really give me a straight answer about wether or not it will. It may or may not. It is horrible how so many surgeons neglect to talk to their patients about the real, COMMON risks of this surgery. It is a major surgery that can permanently destroy nerves in the leg and lead to permanent pain.

8 days passed after my operation and my fibula is unattached. My Doctor also said it will heal, but every time I spin/move my leg, the fibula is clicking. How is it going to heal while it is moving? Should I try to keep my leg constant in the first few days/weeks, or maybe to make some tight bandages so the fibula can't move? Is there a "proper leg position", which is good for fibula proper healing? Thank you in advance for the answers.

I had this surgery 4 months ago. I’m 50 year old female and now back fully walking, driving and gym work. Not quite as fully functional as before (yet) but they had me weight bearing in a boot from 2nd day to heal the bone quicker - last Xray I was signed off as it’s healed incredibly well. My surgeons advice was weight bearing exercises will get you there but it’s a slow process as it’s a heavy slow bone to heal.

in the case where this occurs to the right leg post surgery what are the best ways to heal swelling and bone condition trying to figure a good way to improve the condition for it were an open fracture to right and occurred at the age of 17 I'm 19 now I am just a little concerned about this it were a question of at my age that the faster healing processes to have missed the opportunity also I have visited the Dentist sometimes but it tetor-totter the results its been conflictions with the Dentist( who speak of some dangerous infectious micro-organisms that would be looking for the most foreign objects in the body that would be vulnerably susceptible to the micro-organisms that would leave the teeth to retreat to foreign objects. the argument got worse once they'd seen my allergy/allergies.) this I recognize the Dentist attempt to prevent what could become dangerous. Yet the County Hospital were particularly specific as to the concerns. I am more disappointed by this with what this could cause. They say they don't need to worry about what dangers potentially could be presenting itself. it only happens to those with hip replacements knee replacement and spinal disks I'm not sure I want to be that risky.

+Elisha Allison I think this particular video shows a compound fracture. My first one wasn't compound, but I did break both tibia/fibula pretty much clean through, and I had this surgery. One year later, I was playing soccer and got tackled, took a foot of cleats straight to my left shinguard. I went down in pain. I couldn't bear weight on it and had to leave the game and use crutches to get around. The next day, I went for an x-ray, and it turned out that I had a smaller, hairline-like fracture to the tibia, right above my previous fracture. So, I simply recommend you get an x-ray.
