The question was how many dwarves are wearing ONLY socks - meaning they are wearing green mufflers and hats. So you need to find the combination Green Hats - Green Mufflers - Red Socks / GGR. From the given, you can come up with the following equations: GRR + RGG = 8; GGR + RGG = 9; GGR + GRR = 7. By algebraic substitution on the 1st 2 equations you will then come up with GGR - GRR = 1. Further substitution on 3rd equation will result to 2GGR = 8. Thus; GGR = 4.

The right answer is 7, isn't it? Because for red sock, there's two combination, B+D=7

I got that too! You get that even if you don't solve the question - condition 1 was no hats and socks are the same and condition 2 was 7 hats were red. Given that there are only 2 colours, automatically the no. of red socks becomes 7.

But the question is for ONLY red socks, meaning hat and muffler are both green so you have to eliminate the ones that have red muffler with their red socks as well.
