klampar is very light on his feet & was pretty good in soccer also. his game was not about jumping around but making the other guy to do it for him. he said it in his interview. gergely was the acrobat on the team & they've played a lot. klampar didn't loose matches because of footwork. it was all about how he felt about the match from the beginning to the end, but especially in the beginning. he played in streaks for monthes at a time.

Actually the Swedish and the Hungarian team practiced together in the early 80's(probably with the aim to beat China) but after a few days they Hungarian team wanted to leave because they were so tired. Their physical strength were much less developed than the Swedish team at the time. Christer Johansson (Brother to Kjell) was a pioneer in more physical training if I remember correctly. Stellan Bengtsson once asked Klampar why he mixed brilliant performances with really bad ones and the reply was: "no batteries Bengtsson, no batteries!". So he would have been even more successful if he had practiced his physique further. A brilliant player nonetheless.

Interestingly, the rise of the Swedish table tennis super-star JO Waldner coincided with the fall of the Swedish tennis super-star Bjorn Borg in the early 1980’s. Waldner lasted almost 2 decades longer than Borg in their respective sports. Here at 0:47 the young Waldner shared with Borg the same palm-blowing antic throughout a match. :-) ★★★★★

'azon kívül, hogy ez a svéd fiatalember sokra viszi'. Hát többre nem is vihette volna
Waldner is regarded as a legend in China, almost godlike.

Klampar was a very talented player but it was embarrassing when non-table tennis people watched him play because it reinforced the belief that fitness is not required for table tennis.

Two players who would evolve with time. Klampar from about 70 to 89, and Waldner here 16 years old would still be good enough to be Swedish champ in 2010, 28 years later! Legends both indeed :) Look how the game changed during this time and both were leading this progress, Klampar in the 70's- early 80's and Waldner from then on..

Klampar was even in the world elite in 69 when he won swedish open championchips by beating mens doubles world champion Kjell Johansson

M Tordas Aha! I mist admit I lack a bit of knowledge about that time since I was born five years later.. I know from Stellan Bengtsson that had Klampar put more emphasis on physical training, he would have been even better. Hungary was a role model for Sweden and the generation players including Waldner. We seem sadly to share the common problem to reach the same success now.

SuperHammaren Antar att du är svensk. Var inte ledsen för att vara född 5 år efter Klampars genombrott. Själv är jag född 26 efter det
