I always forget the mechanics of this, so to boil it down to a rule: Always go corner, then force them to make a move that does NOT give them 2 in a row. (The only caveat being if they go middle, in which case all you can do is avoid forcing them to make a move that DOES give them 2 in a row.)

I have another strategy of my own. It only really works though if you're the first person to draw. You start in the center, then if they choose a square that's not a corner, then you could put your next move in a corner on the opposite side of their X/O. That will force them to block you since you could make a diagonal. You block them from making a win, then you have a little triangle where you can either make a diagonal or a straight line.

Same, I thought that this was obvious? I never really thought of it as a "technique", I just naturally figured it out, maybe at like 8-10 years old, same with my brother. Also, you can also do this by starting in the middle and adapt based on where the opponent places there is. Stopped playing tic-tac-toe with my brother forever ago because nobody ever wins, and it got boring. I only lose when I'm intentionally playing badly against small kids.

Sorry, optimal strategy of tic-tac-toe is a cat game. You fail to show the alternative which is to select the middle to start, in which case the opponent picks a corner to make a cat game. If the opponent chooses a side instead, in this case, he loses, because you will just choose a corner connecting to that side, and he will have to block you, in which case, you put your next piece in the corner that does not border any of his moves, and it becomes a trap. If he picks a corner after you pick the center, then you will likely draw, but corners are better real estate than sides, unless you need to block your opponent from winning. So to begin, the first player must pick a corner or the center. To tie, the opponent must pick the other option of these two.

I'm not sure if you want to say that out loud... This is the normal way to play, to basically always end up to tie unless one makes mistake which honestly won't happen too often with only 9 moves in one game. Try mastering alternative version of trying to get 5 in a row on unlimited grid. If you find out ultimate strategy to that where you never lose then THAT will be impressing. (or yeah basically playing a perfect game you never lose but that means just that the opponent needs to make a mistake)
