Tidal Tempest JP (SM64 version)

This is a remix of Tidal Tempest Present (JP) from Sonic CD with SM64's soundset.

I noticed there's been quite an enamoring for the SM64 soundfont... I still don't really understand why but I thought I'd cover a song I know by heart with it :)
The process to make this was interesting. I sequenced this like I do like my MIDI stuff, I used BassMIDI VST as a host to hold the soundfont I was using, which I had on hand from my days of making music for SM64 hacks.
I don't know the exact differences to the soundfont I used and the one on the internet but I know this one was meant to be as close to how the ingame soundbanks have things mapped out, while the one on the internet is very haphazardly thrown together and uses stuff from SM64DS.
So using that, I created this arrangement, trying to keep the voice count reasonably lower like I did making music for N64.
For this song that was still hard and definitely not perfect but I tried to do what I could.
My process then was to render each stem, use a convolution reverb plugin to approximate SM64's programmed reverb/used an IR capture of the game's reverb.
Then lastly, I also added a bit of post processing to soften the sound/to make it sound like an older/analog game OST recording.

i wonder how kondo would make sonic music. his very 90s influences are from a very different area, like a lot of like these western fusion artists like chick corea, herbie hancock just a totally different area, and you can hear that even in SM64. 80s nintendo composers are such a different breed, its really fascinating.
