Beautiful aquarium. I've seen videos of this tank before but it never ceases to amaze me. It's rather hypnotic watching the fish move slowly around the tank. One almost has to feel sorry for the Whale Sharks, they have nowhere to go but in a circle all day and night. However I'm sure they are well taken care of and in some respects safer there. Thanks again for sharing your experiences.

+Dave Davis I hear whale sharks do very poorly in captivity :( As far as I know this was the public aquarium to house them. There are much larger aquariums now such as the Georgia Aquarium which is around 6 million gallons. Still... those are really big fish regardless of the size of the aquarium.

How do you get a whale shark into an aquarium?
@fernandomarturet24867 жыл бұрын
I guess they must get them at an infant stage somehow. Must be an incredibly arduous process though. whale sharks lay eggs, so they must have somer sort of breeding pattern and know were they can find eggs

I was just wondering for anybody who lives in or visits japan,what is the vibe about the whale and dolphin killings over there? I love some of the aquariums there but unlike the US who banned dolphin captures Japan still does it. I don't know if I would ever go, but for anybody who has, is it a select few who still support it, or is it most of the population?
@tidalgardens8 жыл бұрын
+B Vito not speaking for native Japanese people, but in the documentary the Cove, they talk about how it isn't really so much a cultural heritage thing so much as it is defiance of the west. As in, "nothing you can say will force us to stop killing whales." It is a tad hypocritical for the U.S. out of any country in the world to criticize anyone for whaling. At one time 70% of all whaling vessels in the world were American and our industrial revolution was made possible by the high effectiveness of whale oil as both fuel and lubricant. Whaling is even romanticized in our literature of the time (think Mony Dick).
@bvito96068 жыл бұрын
+Tidal Gardens Inc. that is true, I myself support a few aquariums with dolphin in them in US, and as I was researching facts presented by the cove, many proved to be false. I would say 90% of people on here are against animal captivity like that, but I still support those who take proper care of their animals. The reason why I asked, was because while we see what happens, like when Australia versed Japan on whaling, I never knew about how individuals felt in Japan, so my question was if you have talked with people about it, what the general consensus was, I guest I am just looking into how the people there felt, rather than always hearing facts on the news.

My parents are both Japanese and I visit Japan frequently...and this is just my opinion, but eating whale and dolphin meat is pretty rare in Japan. Dolphins especially, since only a small region of Japan does and the rest of the country probably doesn't even know that there are people who eat dolphins. Eating whales, however, is slightly more common than dolphins. I believe this is because there is this post-war nostalgia when whale meat was pretty common due to a shortage of food. You can sometimes see fried whale meat in extremely rare, and random shops. So it's definitely not something that everyone eats for dinner everyday.
