Very cool I love it! I’m new to tie dye, I dabbled in tie dye back in the 70’s, but nothing like is done today. This fold looks fairly easy to try and a design that I believe my guy would like. Your voice is so sweet. I am new to tie dye so thank you. What happens when we don't use soda ash and the shirt is not dry? thank you.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I use fiber reactive dye which requires soda ash to properly bond with the fabric. Without it, the dye will almost totally wash out of the shirt. If the shirt isn't dry when you dye it, you will need to take a little extra time to make sure you get the shirt fully saturated with dye. If the inside of this thick fold is too damp, it will be a little more difficult to get the dye to saturate that area and you may possibly have a few white areas.

Very cool job and great descriptive video. Not sure if you know of Jenn Manufacturing foam tip brushes but you may want to try them for putting the dyes on your items. I use the plastic jars that Dharma uses for 1 pound of dyes it's a great way to reuse them plus you can save any unused dye with the lid. Also, I don't use all of the auxiliary chemicals most suppliers recommend , they really don't seem to make that big a difference to me. Just dye & h2o &maybe salt for turquoises & colors containing it. Thanks for the instructions. Peace, Love, & SAFETY to all.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The foam brushes are great for tie dyeing. I've used them several times to apply black dye to the back of an item, but I haven't ever tried them for applying all the dye though. That's also a great use for the dye containers. I'll have to try that sometime. I hope you have a great week! 🙂

@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
I use the Dawn dish soap because it is a pH neutral dish soap. You probably have a dish soap that is pH neutral that is available in your area too. The Dawn just helps keep the dye that is being rinsed out of the shirt from redepositing back on the shirt.

I have seen a few of your videos.... And I can't figure out how you tie off like that. I don't know if it's bc of jumpcuts on editing idk. But it seems you wrap a couple times and pull....How!?!?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
I wrap the sinew around an area a couple of times, making sure to wrap the sinew on top of itself, and then I pull until I can't pull it any more. The sinew will tighten and lock down on itself. I sometimes will add a couple more wraps of sinew on top of the ones that I just tightened and repeat the process. Otherwise, I move on to the next area that I am going to tie. When I am finished tying sinew lines, I just cut the sinew off and it will stay without unraveling. Hopefully that helps answer your question.

I really like how it turned out. question though. Why do you dye it dry? Does it work better for you? I find that I have more runoff when (liquid) dying a dry shirt. But with ice dying, it doesn't matter as much.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I usually like to dye the thicker folds like this one when they are dry to get better color saturation. The dye seems to soak into the shirt and fully saturated the middle better since it isn't too damp with soda ash solution. This fold would probably have been fine to dye damp, but by the time I ended up being ready to dye it - it was already dry.

Reminds me of a turtle's shell actually. What do you do with the dye runoff? Is it good for anything once the colours have mixed together? I imagine that most colours mixed together make a murky brown.
@FunEndeavors

It does look kind of like a turtle's shell. I just discard the runoff. It isn't really good for anything once it has mixed with soda ash solution from the shirt.

Thank you! Do you use a sinew puller of some kind? I struggled to get my sinew tight enough without a puller. I used to use my sinew straight off of the roll, and I thought it was working well until I got a puller. I was amazed at how much tighter I could pull the sinew using one. It doesn't have to be a fancy puller, but just something that you can grip really tightly. I guess it could possibly be your sinew. I've had rolls before that didn't have much wax on them. The sinew that I use is artificial deer sinew that I purchase from Amazon. amzn.to/2EF28Lu

Looks great. What is the water footprint when you do one shirt at a time? I can process 3 or 4 indigo shibori shirts with less water.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure. I rinse each shirt alone, but I soak them in hot water instead of continuing to rinse for a long time. Then I wash them in the washing machine along with a lot of other tie dye shirts at the same time.

Soda ash..?? Can i use the soda i bake with?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
Soda ash is sodium carbonate, and it is used to raise the pH. The soda you bake with is sodium bicarbonate. I have a blog post about soda ash if you would like some more information. Here is the link: www.funendeavors.com/tie-dye-blog/zd1qlk7dvuzwrglfbio4yvs2t6c97d
