Triple changers and combiners are amazing especially back then when engineering was a lot more primitive like this 1 guy is a robot tank jet and these 6 guys make a big robot, and to this day those are figures I really enjoy them due to complexity. I’m tempted for that new 3rd party blitzwing

Titans Return got me back into transformers due in part to the headmaster gimmick coming back. I love having pilots for alt modes and populating base modes.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there are toylines and robots that can do that, including Gundam. Not all of the mobile suits can do it, but there are enough of them that can do it.

I'd be tempted to separate Scramble City combiners into a separate gimmick as they add a fair bit of customisation over Devastator and Predaking, depending on how many you have.

You could argue the mini con, and/or key gimmick of armada/cyber Tron could be an improvement of the power master idea they not required for all the gimmicks, and in some cases they’re just weapons

Really just triple changers with stickers to make one mode an autobot and the other a con. I wouldn’t have considered it a separate gimmick.

I would have put Targetmasters above Headmasters. Heck I'd even put Powermasters above Headmasters. The reason I really don't like Headmasters is because if you lose the head then you really can't have a complete robot mode. With Target masters they still look complete even if it's missing a weapon. And for Powermasters the reason I rank them higher is because you can just press the buttons to still transform the robot even if you lost the part that's suppose to unlock the transformation. Cybertron toys did this too by the way. Primus literally needs both a cyber key and the Omega Lock in order to unlock different steps to his transformation and it also requires not only plugging in the Omega Lock but also twisting it which makes it way harder to do if you lose that piece. The Power Masters from what I understand were just plug the thing into the port and it unlocks. I've had similar toys in other toy lines and figured out I could just press the buttons without using those parts, not because I lost the parts that were needed but because I was currious how they actually worked and took a close look at what the parts were actually doing to make the gimmick work.

When I was a kid I was just really excited by combiners, especially the Scramble City type. I still remember getting hold of Superion (the weird ROTF-branded redeco of the Energon version), I loved that thing.

Honestly my favorite gimmick is the brain masters, so you can have a good mini-figure and a good transformer both in one Also, I know it’s basically Soundwave/Blaster mixed with target masters, but the…breast force (YES IT’S A THING! Transformers Victory)

Nothing beats the gimmick of modern transformers. It's called YELLOWING. Watch your action figures change color into yellow for only a short amount of time!

I'm in agreement with you on almost every single thing here with one huge exception. Headmasters bargain bin at BEST. Lose the head, which many kids will, and suddenly you're completely missing a completed robot mode, almost as bad as losing Pretender parts. You could buy new heads but 99% of them look absolutely horrendous on anything other than their original intended toy. The stat-changing trick was neat i guess, but did it ever do anything meaningful-? Not that I can recall, but I'll rescind this particular point if I'm proven wrong, I'll be fair here. Still, not a fun gimmick in my opinion, and Titans Return was no better. I just cannot stand any transformer where I have to take a piece completely off and set it aside for one mode or the other unless the toy manages to be INSANELY COOL to make up for it (Seige Shockwave comes to mind for me personally).

Only thing I would change is the Powermaster gimmick. It should be higher. But since there were only, what…3? I guess it’ll do. I loved the Micromasters that transformed and combined to make the vehicle mode. Always thought that was interesting.

I love them all. Except maybe action masters... The two I have had their pegs wear out so their arms and legs fell off at the slightest touch. safe to say they always got to get blown apart by missiles. If I had to choose a favorite though I'd say headmasters. I bought my first pair (Weirdwolf and Chromedome) at Anime Boston when I was in my 20's. If I could just get Squeeze play and Horri-bull my collection would be complete

Duocons are the reverse of Reflector. Mini-spies and powerdashers were around before throttlebots. Monster bots did the spark gimmick before the little guys Also do minibots and microcassetes count as tiny guys like micro masters? Or do micro masters get the gimmick because they were exceptionally tiny? Do attack modes count (omnibots?) Or Tracks’ flying car mode? It’s not triple changing, but it’s not quite triggercon/bot either…

I would've put the throttle bots in flea market because every dollar store had a version of that toy lol that gimmick is so cheap. The battle chargers would've gone in bargain bin because it's pretty much the same gimmick but with transformers flavor. Every thing else I would agree with, I think.

i would have to put powermasters down at the bottom with the action masters tbh. it’s less of a feature and more of an obstruction, it’s not making it any more interesting or complex, it’s just putting something in the way of the transformation. maybe if it triggered an automorph feature, but they dont, and they never really felt like they had much value in play.

Ultra Magnus is one of my favorite toys in general, totally agree that super modes add a ton. I hate targetmasters though. The gun robots had zero integration with anything, it's all just very boring to me.

Honestly, I feel the bottom category should stay empty on this one, sure action masters didn't increase the possibility, but you selling it short on the play pattern with the vehicles, some even get that base play that you mentioned. high bargain bin at least.

Of course the reason the Barbie caused fires was how the sparks were positioned. Most of the other toys with the gimmick had it inside the main body of the toy so the sparks from the device had distance before they could hit anything ignitable. The skates on the Barbie were not inside anything so the sparks were not contained so they hit things while still hot enough to light fibers and paper. Most of the others were safe but the skates were basically the igniter wheel from a cigarette lighter.
