Sometimes the simplest move done elegantly is just the best. I've been known to rewatch a good bracket or rocker over and over dozens of times, who cares about the quad axel. But one of my enduring favourites is a spread eagle change of edge - either inside to outside or vice versa. I feel like there were a couple of seasons where everyone was doing them and they were glorious, then suddenly everyone was doing knee slides instead which are fine I guess, but I miss the deceptively leisurely swoop of the spread eagle.

I found your whole video very interesting. I was a competitive skater in the 1960s-1970s. I can tell you were never made to do school figures, and I think you may also not have done much in dance. All those step moves, like c-step, s-step, brackets, counter, loop were used extensively in both dance and school figures. We did an hour of school figures every day of the week. Such a quiet, peaceful time, - just the sounds of the skates on ice. No music, no talking, and each skater had his/her little patch of ice - which is, of course, why it was often referred to at patch. The control we learned in tracing those figures helped us enormously in our dance and free skate routines. Despite your dislike of lutz, toe-loop, and flip jumps, my guess is that you were absolutely thrilled when you first landed one. I vividly remember the first time I attempted a double toe-loop, which we called a cherry flip. Since I am now in my late 60s, jumps are only in my past, or in dreams at night. I still love to skate, and every chance I get, I will do some of the dances: Dutch Waltz, Canasta Tango, Swing, Fiesta Tango. My all time favourite dance has always been the Blues, and I would love to be able to do it again. Sadly, my balance is not reliable enough to do that choctaw without falling. I hope you enjoy every chance you get to skate, to compete, and to take tests, so you will also have wonderful memories when you become a senior citizen.

This is my first time watching one of your videos, and I really enjoyed your commentary on all these elements. For future reference, Evgenia's last name is pronounced kind of like "Med-VIE-di-va" (it's not correct spelling but for pronunciation clarity). Also, 13:55 flying camel done by Kim Yuna in that "Send in the Clowns" program of hers was actually an actual butterfly entry, not the classic "flying camel" spin. I'm pretty sure that both the classic flying camel and the butterfly spin entry that Yuna did are both classified as the same flying spin in IJS, but since the butterfly spin entry is more difficult than the regular one, the butterfly gives better GOE. Sorry for the long essay explanation--basically what I meant was that while the "flying camel" shown would technically be classified as such in the IJS system, it's actually different from the "classic flying camel". Just a suggestion from another viewer, thanks for uploading this video!

Because I’m a trivia nut, here are some facts about some of the terms you discussed: Charlotte (pronounce Shar-lot) was invented by Charlotte Oelschlagel (1898-1984) in the 1920s and named after her. Along with her husband, Curt Neumann, they developed the Death Spiral (back outside). Ludmila and Oleg Protopopov (1935-2017 and 1932-2023, respectively) created three additional types of Death Spirals (back inside; forward inside and forward outside which they named the Cosmic Spiral; Life Spiral and Love Spiral). The Cantilever Spread eagle was created by Warner Groebli (1915-2008), who was part of the comedic skating duo Frick and Frack. He was Frick. The Broken Leg Sit Spin was popularized by Toller Cranston (1949-2015) in the 1970s, along with his famous Broken Neck Sit Spin. The Biellman spin was named after Denise Biellman (1962) but she didn’t invent it. In 1981, she was the only skater who could perform it well (her World Championship). It was first performed in the 1965 European Championships by Tamara Moskvina. You can probably see examples of all of these skaters on KZbin. As for just a regular spiral, I vote for Alissa Czisny. Great video Cathy.

love! Thank you for all the skating history!!
@yohanes2034Ай бұрын
@@PecanSandees23 it’s interesting that several moves were named after the inventor or who popularized them but some were not and simply called on whatever they look (like dead spiral based on part of skating blade and direction). I’m curious as to what the reason or what is the norm in FS. In gymnastic is based on the person who first perform it in competition but not gonna lie it makes it difficult to remember what is what lol.

Yuna’s layover (side camel) is the standard for that position fr. The way both her arms just extend horizontally and her back is parallel to the ice is so elegant and satisfying. Most skaters would put 1 arm extended and the other one near the skating leg and its really ugly😣
@cathydingg15 күн бұрын
seriously- I can't fathom looking like that trying to attempt a side camel haha I think I would just look floppy
@jerichogamara933915 күн бұрын
@ I think with a little practice, you can!!🫶🏻🫶🏻
@sso_kartoffel6268Күн бұрын
Theres a reason for that actually, because those are two different positions😅 the difficult features in the camel depend on the way your shoulders are facing (down, side or up) and most skaters do a side version while yuna kim does an 'up' version. So using her as an example for a side camel doesn't really make sense, but most people don't know theres's a difference😊
@jerichogamara9339Күн бұрын
@@sso_kartoffel6268 yeah instead of side camel, the layover camel wouldve been the more appropriate term. In any case I was also referring to the fact that no other skater can pull off that kind of horizontal and open position that Yuna does with her arms during the layover position. The closest is probably when Mao Asada did the variation in the 2008-2009 season, and even hers didnt have both arms equally open and leveled.
@sso_kartoffel6268Күн бұрын
@jerichogamara9339 i rarely ever see anyone attempt it tbh. the only one i can think of right now would be Junhwan Cha, but he does have a different arm position as well. Especially now with the limit on difficult positions in spins, i don't feel like many skaters are going to attempt it since it's kind of unnecessarily difficult, even though I would love to see more skaters do variations with the shoulders facing upwards. I'm just really frustrated about the new spin rules🥲

Misread the title as “figure skating MOVIES” and now would love for you to watch/react to some. I agree with a lot of your assessments on this tier list! It seems like a lot of people are over the spider lunge, but I love the dramatic look so it’s S tier for me. Also disagree on the camel! I can’t do it and I’m sure it’s hard AF, but I like how it looks on male skaters. Lastly, your beef with toe loop is so funny to me because I prefer it wayyy more over Salchow (but I haven’t learned the other jumps yet so I’m sure the best is to come).

I hate the A frame spin and refuse to learn it (until my coach makes me). Yes, toe loop sucks. Why was it invented? My coach on broken leg spins a few years ago “that’s a good start. Can you break your leg more?” Brackets look cool when skaters who are not me do them. You forgot the cross foot spin. It’s less common now, but in the 80s it was very popular. It’s insanely difficult to do well. Watch Gary Beacom for a good example of one.

Favorite that I did well was a camel-jump-back camel or a camel to a layback to a back scratch spin My least was the a frame or the hand assisted spiral ala Nancy Kerrigan My favorite ump is a walley-falling leaf double or triple toe loop and any flip jump I find throws exciting but I really enjoy when a pairs or dance team does twizzles and is super synchronized My former coach was Ronnie Robertson and he taught me the Gus Lussi method of spinning at Paramount Iceland in Southern California. He holds a special place in my heart 💜 What is your favorite move that you do well?

Some moves I hate/ dislike in FS cause most of them I like or just indifferent to Aerial: I hateee backflips, they’re ugly and dangerous (hence the ban). I dread this season where many skaters would do it regardless if their program ask for a backflip. Most of them will probably land forward and look ugly, and I just pray no accident where they slip and fall Spins: I dislike adelina camel cause that position is unaesthetic and uncomfortable. I like yuna camel buttt unfortunately only jun who can do it justice, everyone else butcher it so bad. I also dislike candle spins variation (hyper flexible biellmann variation), cause it does not look better than traditional biellmann but it looks hard and forced Jumps: loop, sorry unless you’re Kaori Sakamoto then I dislike loop. The cross feet(X) shape on the entry for loop jump is unnatural imho. Most skaters are just crossing their feet before loop jump without any preceding steps to mask it. Only Kaori who can do the entry so well. Others: cantilever pass, most of the aerial moves also I feel indifferent almost to disliking them. Dead spiral in pair discipline is also one of the moves I dislike cause it’s hard to find the right musical phrase to do that move without killing the program dynamic
