With Skitarii the general difficulty is they can be completely lobotomized forces as tool of the Magos, or it can be completely human like independent mind of a volunteer... both is fully possible.

Before I even hit play! I have a question! Can a Guardsman be turned into a skitarii?? Like can an off duty Guardsmen get Shanghaied like they do with randos??

Very likely so depending on rank and whose command the guardsman falls under. Some of the more hardcore units would be left alone entirely, as it would be “inefficient” for the mechanicum to deal with the ramifications. Guardsman that are guilty of crimes can absolutely be punished in that way.

There is a short story where a bunch of guardsmen are turned, against their will, into kataphron servitors by a tech priest. The short story in question is in warhammer horror for a good reason.

I'm sure whenever the tech priests need to replenish their skitarii, every now and then you might find a guardsman or two going missing. Across the kinds of battlefields that exist in 40k no-one will notice a few guardsmen going missing here or there. Most would assume they just died to the enemy or the many environmental hazards. This is just a guess but on an active warzone when in need of replacements the techpriests probably use injured soldiers that are either dying or no longer capable of fighting. Some regiments even kill crippled soldiers or don't bother saving the ones who will no longer be able to fight, seeing it as a waste of resources that could be spent on someone who may yet still be able to fight. So they probably take the soldiers who are in that state and "save" them from death by converting them to skitarii instead. They would see this is making use of a resource that would otherwise go to waste, and it'd free up hospital beds for soldiers who may yet still recover and fight again. It doesn't matter if he's got grave life threatening injuries, already lost a limb or got a mashed organ, as he'll have most of the body replaced anyway. And all this would be allowed because it'd be seen as them allowing this soldier to continue serving the emperor. Many soldiers might even volunteer for it.

It is an unfair comparison as even the very best human soldiers are exactly that...HUMAN. The Skitarii exceed them by exceeding human capacity. It's literally comparing a soldier to a heavily armed and armored combat cyborg.

Id say the mordian iron gaurd have comparable discipline to the cadians. I think skitari have more physical capabilities than a gaurdsman because of their augmetics. But as an overall fighting force i wouldn't say they are superior. Throw some scrap code in the mix and they won't know if theyre coming or going

Consider, if the Cult Mechanicus didn't have _frequent and apparent_ "lapses in to Humanity", then they'd be xenos. Xenos who'd have a monopoly on technological knowledge. It's bad enough that Mankind depends on mutant Navis Nobilite for space travel. I like the Red Priests, but if they were any more robot, they'd be deplorable. Good authors realize this at some level, that the acolytes of the Omnissiah should have some personality, some traits easier to empathize with than "curing the flesh".
