"You should think of the word 'depressed' as 'deep rest'. Your body needs to be depressed. It needs deep rest from the character that you've been trying to play."
This week on TIFF Long Take, Rob and Geoff lose their minds as they sit down with one of their childhood idols, Jim Carrey. The legendary comic is the subject of Chris Smith’s new documentary 'Jim & Andy: the Great Beyond - the story of Jim Carrey & Andy Kaufman with a very special, contractually obligated mention of Tony Clifton', an exploration into Carrey’s intense adoption of Kaufman’s persona during the making of the 1999 film 'Man on the Moon'.

This is going to sound bizarre, but the most profound dream I ever had was years ago, before I had ever heard him talk about any of this, and in my dream he said, “You are me, we are everyone. We’re all one, kid.” I wrote it down in the notes app on my phone and dated it as soon as I woke up because it left such an impact. Now listening to this, he’s saying exactly that.

Thank you so much for sharing this 7 months ago! It deeply resonates with me, in an odd & abstract way - how you present that message from Jim in your dream likely was a "spiritual transmission" for lack of better term. There's a great Happening going around the world, and the 'actors' in this are not those we would have once expected! :-) Be blessed out there!

I used to love Jim when I was a kid, then I stopped caring for his weirdness and movies. He was too much. Then all of a sudden I see him doing these interviews recently n over the past few years, and I now have an even higher respect and admiration for him than I ever did. He's now calm, relatively, and speaks truth and from the heart. People say he's gone nuts, but he has only woken up much like the rest of us. Keep doing you Jim.

As much as I truly love Burr, it would be equally as interesting in my opinion to rather turn that into: Bill Burr needs a Jim Carrey-style Ego death, psychedelic experience and then just talks about his daily thoughts/opinions through the newly refined and polished lens of perceptive Truth, etc. .. Y'know, Talking about how when we truly boil down the essences of the human condition, that we're all ocean consciousness and single-celled organisms acting as the actual Universe that is experiencing itself through ethereal nature of both Time and Space. etc. I'd listen!

Hm, I like the idea of 'you're so busy pressing down all your anger and pain which you think you have no right to have that life becomes unbearable/too much' better. Deep rest, okay, but only if you stop pressing down, let it come up and out, own it, move on. It's a decision to pull yourself out of the mire. Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. Peace!

The way I see it, Jim Carrey had an ''acting overdose''. I've watched him on countless shows over the years and he is so ''on''. Even when he gets more real, he'll usually end his story with a joke because that's what people expect. Now he's exhausted from it but also less anxious about being himself in public and that's a really good thing. I'm so glad that he's that alert about his feelings, that's really reassuring. A very strong human being, that one! Love him, always will.

@@livingashtree1942 For sure. I don’t think Fun Times was putting him down. But if a depressed person who’s been sold on dissociative disorder as a lifestyle recommends following what depression tells him, that’s not a recommendation anyone should take. How many regular people can even afford to walk away from their lives so they can just lie around all the time? One tip: the body, in order to maintain its health and strength, must move. That’s how the body is constructed. So to lie around being depressed is literally self-destructive. But hey, nothing’s real (to quote John Lennon under the influence of drugs and a questionable guru, something he renounced later); so to Jim, it’s ok to just lie there. Note that real yogis teach a many-branched tree of yogic practices, including physical exercise.

True self? He says he does not exist...no self. "Selfness" is found when you have a relationship with your creator. I believe Jim is still searching...I believe God is waiting for him to seek for ultimate Truth which is that we are MADE in the image of God. We are not all this one consciousness thing. Dog doo doo is not god. Matter is not God. God is spirit and those who worship Him must do so in spirit and in Truth. Truth by definition is exclusive. "I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but by Me" ~Jesus the Christ.

curiousgeorge555 We are all still searching. The search never ends. We are the creators. We are God. Matter does not actually exist. The "one consciousness thing" is just another way of saying spirit, i.e. God. You're talking about the same thing as Jim. This whole reality is a dream created for fun by God, infinite spirit, consciousness, aka us. Also: Why is truth exclusive? Why would God create billions of different creatures if he didn't want them to have different perspectives?
@Iam-od2nc

curiousgeorge555 Since Christians tend not to like pantheism ("we are God"), I will offer you a thought experiment. Pretend you are God. You have infinite time, infinite intelligence. What would you do? Well, you would entertain yourself, wouldn't you? Perhaps play a game, pretend you are a little creature. Hey that's us! Well, isn't it not that crazy an idea that God with infinite time on his hands might pretend to be a human for fun?

curiousgeorge555 Hi. I grew up in a church. My dad was the pastor. I was taught that too. I graduated from Liberty University, a fundamentalist Christian College. I'm not saying you are right or wrong. It sounds like you are repeating what you have been told. It sounds like you have a well structured mental construct. I bet you can provide the biblical references for your beliefs. What's important is being silent. Inner peace means the mental arguments subside and eventually are gone all together. The memory of God returns to the quiet mind.

Thank you. Thank you. Right? I don't know why people overreact about a celebrity changing their lifestyles or outlooks on life. They are just normal people trying to live their way through life and got lucky to be able to have a job that pays them so well. But that doesn't mean they are any different or better than us. They can adjust and change their lifestyle however they wish just like many people do everyday. But I feel like some of the people that do overreact cling to celebrities because they look to them as idols and examples of how we should live. When we shouldn't. They are just people too.

He’s a Legend. The only regret I have is that he did not do the sequel to The Mask, and watching this interview made me realise that he also regrets that decision, he mentioned The Mask so many times. But I get that he served us, the spectators. Gave his life for us, and we don’t appreciate what he did for us. Some people are horrible, he clearly hates the paparazzi. People didn’t look at him as human, but only as an entertainer, and in reality he is so much more!

I love and relate to the things Jim are saying. But it is like a climber who went to the top of the mountain, came back, and are telling us that there is nothing there. I don’t know, maybe people have to get there to see with their own eyes. The view up there should be beautiful, but no one can stand there for too long, and when you see it, you actually end up realizing it was not worthy, because you can have the same view from wherever you are. The desire to go up there slaves you. I’m being metaphorically here, but that is how I’m digesting it. Cheers, Jim!

Ego, character, or one's 'true self'. It doesn't exist, we've been forced (or so it seemed) to try to create it to fit in with the world and others around us. We just are, and one day will not be. So just enjoy it and don't let yourself get in the way.
@slick_Ric
@slick_Ric 7 жыл бұрын
it means the weight of the world doesn't hang on your shoulders, that every little thing you do isn't the end of the world, that what people think and say about you doesn't really matter, among other things. you don't have to expect yourself to be any certain way, you don't have to keep talking the same way or doing the same things just because that's what everyone expects of you. you can change. you can stop being uptight and seeing other people as 'strangers' and making separations between 'me' or 'us' and 'them'. the whole "oneness" thing is about brotherhood. it's about realizing you're just a damn person and everyone else is just a damn person, we all have a right to live and be alright and we're all just trying to get by and live the best we can despite our flaws that never fully go away, "ego" to the new age and psychology types and "sin nature" to Judeo-Christian types. I'm Christian but i was once deep into this new age stuff. it helps a bit, but it sure as hell isn't anything to live by long term. if any of these ideas appeals to you, know that Christ embodies most of these things and much more, and I'd recommend finding a good, relatively small church nearby to ask questions, and if you are brave enough ask about the path to salvation. it's good that you asked this question here at least. it's true, most of the time people are scared to ask because they want to put up this front like they know something tjey don't. that's the ego, that is characteristic of the self that Jim Carrey says doesn't exist anymore. there would be way less stupid comments on this video if this was more understood, if people asked instead of assuming they know that Jim Carrey is talking about nonsense. this is also presumptuous ego garbage. learn it a little at a time, though. Jim may have come onto too much too quickly and that's why he seems so out of it at times. anyway God bless, hope this helped.

I completely enjoyed this, full length, interview with Jim. It gave him a consistent conversational string, rather than a bit of glib comments that were intended to make him sound insane. there has clearly been a lot of soul searching and mental clearing that he went through to find a sense of inner peace. I'm not sure how everyone else feels, but knowing that that there is a breathing, rationalizing human behind all those characters actually makes me like him and his craft all the more.

I love the way that Jim openly talks about things. I have worked long enough with psychology to see schizophrenia, not in full blown but elements of it. As much as I love Jim´s love for his dad, he needs to step out of his shadow and create who ever Jim should be, giving meaning to what he finds relevant. I personally love the idea about character, and it is an amazingly helpful tool, but even though a character can seem like an escape, it is still considered part of ourselves. It is sad to see people having to erase themselves, in order to experience a break for what they find hard to handle. Fraud talked alot about it in his early teachings and is some of the best work to date. I should love to see a talk with Jonathan Petersson and Jim on this subject.

underrated observation. i agree he was living to fulfill his dad's own unfulfilled expectations that he never really got to find out who he is or what he wanted from life. seems like for all the love Jim and his dad had between them, Jim never got to explore himself outside of what pleased his dad.

I love that Jim Carrey's spiritual teacher is Jeff Foster. Foster is such a kind soul (and he himself mocks the idea that he is some kind of spiritual teacher). I went on a weekend retreat with him a few weeks ago. A beautiful invitation to accept everything and stop resisting life, with all it's pain, frustration, suffering and yes, love. Even stop resisting your resistance. Embrace your whole being. You're not "broken" when you feel sad, depressed or when life hasn't turned out the way you had envisioned it.

You ROCK! Brother! Kudos!!! I always felt there was more behind the outer facade you wore. We even use the same term, "construct"! ~ Constructs of consciousness. I've been actively participating, consciously, with these "constructs" since I was awakened in 1972. As a 1st wave forerunner, I know that most of the dark matrix of separation and limitation has been dismantled. As a planetary collective, I believe we are now in the 'twilight' zone. Even though the bands have been lifted, we're still being affected by the encoded cellular imprint. As you know, once we know we're free, and BELIEVE WE'RE FREE, WE ARE FREE!!! Then we get to begin our journey of returning HOME, to ONEness. Thank you for sharing your knowings at this time. It's vital to humanity's awakening awareness. I've also started writing my book. I think you'll appreciate its title : "MOONWALKING AROUND THE SUN ~ My Story of Waking Up as a Spirit Wearing a Bodysuit" (All rights reserved 2017) With Many Blessings to you, and to US ALL, as we stream forth from~to the center of creation. _()_ Now THAT's a construct worth keeping!!! _()_ _()_ _()_
