This shows my age lol, but I remember when I was in high school, pre-modern smart phone takeover, my favorite English teacher was super into Henry David Thoreau. She was very adamant that we as a society spent too long on screens, connected to technology, and so gave us a yearlong assignment where we were supposed to periodically go sit outside somewhere nice for 15-20 min, unplugged, and journal about the experience. And it's funny, because a lot of people thought she was nutty back then, especially because the journal was such a significant part of the final grade and well, teenagers, but now that my screen time's exploded and I've stuck inside for too long, first thing I wanna do when we get out is find a goddamn tree to sit under!

Now I'm back on my phone and boy, drawing got way, way harder and also if I put my drawings chronologically there's visable regress. I noticed that I'm more inpatient, because I rush to get back on my phone. I also started looking around and noticed how it affects ability to focus of people among me, this is honestly kinda scary. The thing that got me was when I checked my "last 7 days" record in Screen Time and saw that I had spent 23 hours on social media this last week. (That's almost a whole day straight. Ouch.) I'm okay with using my Spotify, Kindle Cloud, LingoDeer/Duolingo, Libby/Overdrive, and Forest Timer apps as often or long as necessary, especially during this time of staying at home. These types of apps help me spend time (grow my brain), whereas on Facebook/Instagram/Tumblr/Reddit/KZbin/Netflix I waste time (stagnate my brain) more often than not. (I'm all for social media and entertainment in healthy capacities, but 23 hours is way too much of my life per week for mindless scrolling+posting.) My goal: stop being a mental couch potato :)

I’ve moved all of my productivity to paper, I just get sucked in whenever I open the phone up. That’s one of the things I’ve noticed about myself. So I have a book journal, and a catch all type of thing where I have my budget and write down all of my purchases, by the end of each month I make a little circle diagram of it. A have a to do list in my kitchen and goals in my monthly view in my planner. I’ve been working on my way to use planners and paper like this for years and it’s also a creative outlet. So win win, less screen time and more creative time! Noticed the other day how powerful the writing stuff down really is, I’ve deviated a bit from writing to do lists while working at home and the other day I just had to empty my brain out. And it really made me more focused and on task. It sounds really stupid but it just got so much clearer. Plus I had a new fun pen that felt amazing to write with so I wanted to cross things off 🤓

Great video! I'm not so much addicted to "screen time" but to youtube (which is on screen but by screen addiction I include social media and other many apps). Honestly it really makes me very sad. I've lost the count on the number of times that I told myself I would start reading more or that I would pick up this movie to watch and then I end up falling back on this black hole of KZbin. I've decided that I'm only going to watch 3 videos per day because I was getting really fed up about the fact that since this whole quarantine began I've wasted my days away going from video to video. Some days I manage to pick up only 3 videos, but other days it's SOOO hard. It makes me feel very weak and like I don't have any control over my life. I would like to add that, please, be compassionate with yourself. These technologies are designed to be addictive! Hell, they literally spy on us in order to understand what our potential interest fields are and give them to us. Creepy as hell. So I can't share the mindset "technology isn't bad, it's us that don't know how to use it". No, technology definitely takes advantage of our human psyche to keep us hooked and to profit, which is always their main goal. So, technology is evil, at least how I see it. And it's not because it gives us some amazing features that it stops being evil.

I seriously love your love for data. I got my bachelors degree in journalism and ended up becoming a data analyst because that’s what I liked more. But your analysis of media and attention to detail really keeps me excited to be alive. Thank you for existing 💖

I was staring at my screens ALL the time: when I ate, when I was on my way somewhere, in my bed! I started being more aware of my screen time when I got dry eyes! Trust me... you don't want this. This condition is very, very hard to cure :( and makes looking at screens panful.

You should try bullet journaling! I used to track everything through apps but it led me to spend too much time on my phone and I didn't like that there had to be a separate app for each thing. I got into bullet journaling this year and it's made my life so much easier! You can customise it however you want and make it fit your lifestyle and you can make it very artsy or keep it minimalistic, it's super versatile :)

I love this middle of the road kind of video. So much more realistic. You're great. I needed this. I was watching productivity channels, but I feel like I'm just failing and should give everything up or something all the time. I'm very happy to have watched your vid.

I'm commenting to help your algorithm. My daily screen time is an average of 7 to 8 hours on phone, obviously not including the fact that youtube is always on, on my computer. My top apps are twitter and a sudoku app.

I love that your videos take this balanced/both sides approach. It gives me even more to think about long after the video is over!

I’ve noticed despite loving listening to things like podcasts, music and so forth I do need quiet time. I need time to think for myself without anything external. I feel much better when I have that time :) but yeah, it’s hard not gonna lie
@Kevin-ok8dj3 жыл бұрын
i feel this. I sometimes need 10 minutes after a video to process what really happened and think things over. Also it's generally healthy to do have some silence in your life. Btw, I love that you have Sophie from howls moving castle as pfp.

I always avoid watching your videos because I see the title and I'm just like... shit that's me. But then I watch them and I feel so inspired. You're always so empathetic about things. Instead of going on about how terrible technology is bad and how I'm a bad person for being on my phone and how you're so much better than me because you did a 30 social media cleanse, you talk vulnerably and productively about the issue. I really really appreciate the environment you've created on your channel

I have been really struggling with this addiction lately and you posted this at the perfect time I swear to god. I am so comforted that other people are having the same issue and i understand the struggle. I have always had a problem with a huge screen time but right now it's wayyyyy higher cuz of quarantine !!! Thanks for talking about this, i NEVER ever hear anyone talk about this.

I struggled with drinking enough water for a long time. What I started to do was make sure I drank one full water bottle (16oz) at every meal. That way I would have most of the daily recommended intake naturally. And I would only have to worry about having the last portion at some point in the day. Most of the time split between the morning and afternoon.

i do digital art. so, often when i go to sit down and get off social media, i am still technically staring at a screen for hours. i might be doing something productive, but i’m still staring at a screen. and most of the time, i have my phone right next to me listening to youtube videos since i just need some background noise while i’m working. i would absolutely love to cut down on screentime, but it’s such a big part of what i do daily that i just don’t really know how anymore.

For the productivity thing, I would strongly recommend a bullet journal. You can put those paper habit trackers and be creative at the same time, and you can also put deadlines and everything a typical planner has but customized to you.

All of those tracking apps would give me serious anxiety, I'm in the last semester of undergrad and should be working on my thesis but who am I kidding, nothing is happening and I feel really bad and lazy and like loosing brain cells - screentime (phone) in the last few weeks is between 2 and 3 hours a day BUT Laptop/Nintendo/TV not included would estimate like 6 to 8 hours a day

This is the most relatable thing ever! I keep wanting to lock all my devices in another room or something and just read a book or do something productive. But I just can't because of online classes and my addiction to the internet. Good to know I'm not the only one going through this lol.

felt all of this so so hard. i’ve been trying to be mindful of my screen time when it comes to social media because i know its (for me) more often than not a net negative and i end up feeling sad/depressed/anxious/jealous/frustrated/angry/etc. iphones let you limit your daily screen time per app in the screen time settings and i set a daily one hour limit for instagram, twitter, facebook (which i have since decided to delete altogether), and tik tok. [i also put them in a folder on my phone called “you’re depressed” and surprisingly having to access them with an additional touch, rather than having them on the bottom bar or on the first page, makes me reach for them much less]. you can obviously still override when the time limit notification comes up but i tend to not do so and usually just put it down. may not work or be possible for everyone, but its been really really helpful for me personally!

Something that has really helped me is bullet journalling. It means that I can spend time being creative and away from screens and I can still track the things I want to with my habit tracker! It's been a game changer for reducing my anxiety and being more mindful
