Nina S while there certainly exist cases of creators abusing their platform, I think it is unfair to say that the majority of sponsors are irrelevant. I would argue that it is quite the opposite, actually: the majority of youtubers are conscious of what a privilege it is to have an audience and are thus highly sensitive to whether a potential sponsor would be a fit for their subscribers/channel. Anyone who is a KZbinr can tell you that the amount of work put in hardly ever equates to the money earned, so be happy that the person whose content you’re consuming (whether you’re watching it ‘out of boredom’ or not), is able to receive a little compensation for their hard work. Finally if an ad doesn’t interest you, simply skip over it 😉

I mean, it not like you are getting money for free lmao. You are paying it through your taxes. American colleges are exensive because of things like financial aid and gov backed debt. If colleges know the gov will give students money no matter what, they can spend money to "improve" their campuses and afford to raise the wages of the facility, which causes tuition to rise. America would be one of the cheapest nation's to get a degree if we got rid of gov subsidies, but this would mean getting rid of luxuries like campus gyms, which most people aren't willing to give up.

I seriously can't wrap my head around the fact that most people need to get in serious debt to acquire a 'basic' degree. It's so wrong that purely based on in what family you are born decides the chances of getting a comfortable life. It's so unfair, I mean the poor can't break their vicious circle unless they are very gifted and strong enough to pursue jobs next to their education. While dumb rich people can easily get a degree. Average poor people and average rich people should have equal opportunities. As a country, you cannot really call yourself a "free country" when your class determines your future so much. I agree that one should work hard to earn a degree, but that can be purely academic, it shouldn't be working multiple jobs and starting off your life with huge piles of debt or even not studying because you cannot afford it. It often seems that Americans see "working hard" as the way you need to do it, but that's putting quite some pressure on the shoulders of people who haven't even started their lives yet. Having to work multiple jobs and putting your mental and physical health at risk because of it is shouldn't be normalized. Everyone deserves an education without seriously struggling for it, it's the only way for a society to develop and be proud. I first studied in Belgium, and as a child of parents who are middle-class, I had to pay 900 euros a year, (Children from parents who are financially not in a good place often have to pay only half or even less). I study in the Netherlands now and It has doubled, but It's still doable and I won't be starting my life with debt, which I'm quite grateful for. I'll happily pay taxes with money I earned from a job I got with my degree, so everyone gets the chance to do it that way. You're very brave for opening up about this, I'm sure this will help a lot of people and make people who aren't that empathetic reason a bit more.

Blackbird vb Just because Americans go into debt to get degrees does not mean they NEED to. There are other options, such as waiting a year and working full time and saving all that money for college, and then working part time in college (this would pay for a couple years of community college and then a state school); I live in California and cost of living is high and I could have managed this by crunching the numbers. However I did live with my parents and commute 1.5 hours to school so I know I had the advantage of living with my parents.

$58,000 in debt in student loans here! And I didn't even finish school. This video has brought me some comfort haha. There's a lot to be said about young people (17-19 generally) falling victim to this college debt epidemic. As someone who started college at 17 I can say I didn't fully understand what I was getting myself into. Like you said, sure they try to explain it, but it's difficult for someone at that age to really comprehend the amount of money they'll end up owing. And they promise these high paying jobs to try to reel you in, but at the end of the day no one can really guarantee you that. I think you should continue to touch on this topic in your videos. If I had seen this video when I was 17 getting ready to go to an expensive ass school, I would've thought twice. Keep the conversation going on this! I agree, so many kids in high school think going to an out of state school is a good idea, but financially it’s incredibly irresponsible. I’m applying to veterinary school next year, and there’s only one vet school in my state (which is the same school I’m going my undergraduate). If I don’t get in to this school, I’m going to take a gap year and reapply instead of giving myself the chance to go out of state. If I get denied twice, I’ll go somewhere else because I can’t wait forever, but I refuse to take on that much debt if I can avoid it. There’s always a chance you could transfer to a state school and save some money instead of staying at your current school.

I believe someone mentioned this on a previous video but as a German the whole credit card debt really blows my mind. It seems to be quite a normal thing in the US? In Germany, most people don't even own a credit cards and generally people just don't spend money they don't have. Of course, there's exceptions like taking loans for buying a house etc. As for the student loans I think most people know that we don't have tuition fees so that's not a problem and if you need money for basic expenses there are many options with government support as the easiest. Not to go into detail but basically you have to pay back half of what you were given with a max. of 10K. But even that payment depends on your income etc

It's better to examine your income and see where you can save, or prioritize how much you throw at your debt. Paying off debt aggressively=cutting costs everywhere else (think beans and rice). Valeria Vagapova well by 22, which would ideally be the age of graduation. A lot of people get jobs starting in high school, part time during school semesters and a lot more hrs during the summer. This goes for college too. I’m a full time college student with 17 credits but make approx $2,000 or above per school year with just a work study job working a measly 10 hrs a week. Multiply that by 4 yrs and that’s already$8,000. This is excluding the likely 2 yrs from high school a lot of teenagers typically work. And excluding the four summers in those 4 years in which you can earn thousands more I’m limited by transportation issues, being a collegiate athlete, and taking 17 credits per semester etc I can only get jobs on campus and work 10 hrs at $9 minimum wage. but for others as a full time student and part time worker, over the course of a 4 yr run in college (age 22) $10,000 is not that hard at all. Never said they’d be debt free tho🤷🏾‍♀️ I said having $10,000 saved up isn’t that unreasonable at all. Especially if moderately good decisions are made and approx 6 yrs of work.

This country is fucking rough man, I tell you what. But you’re so right in that we NEED NEED NEED to be talking about this transparently. While partially circumstantial, our choices also impact our debt and that’s valuable to reflect on.

Hearing this makes me so sad. Where I live school is free, uni is very affordable, if you cant afford it there‘s government help you can apply for (which you do not have to pay back) and getting credit cards for young people is very uncommon and student jobs pay a livable wage. America seriously needs to get their shit together, having a whole generation in massive debt is honestly horrible and should not be the case in any developped country!

I graduated with the average 40k in debt, thankfully I do not have a lot of CC debt (less than 2k). My average monthly payment is $430; I stopped pursuing a masters because it was adding to my debt. I will also caution folks that you need to ASK your student loan companies before you start making the lowest payment because that extra money does not always go to paying down your principle, it may just go to paying more interest for you which just means you'll sink more money in to your loans than you need to. I know people that learned that the hard way.

My husband went back to school for four years and while I was working, it still wracked up $80,000 in student loan, plus $15,000 from car and wedding. We're are lucky he got a job in his field and it pays well enough that the past three years since we've managed to pay it down to just one $15,000 left, hopefully we'll be able to complete that this year. I Did dual enrollment through high school which paid for my first year of community college, then my second year and a few mistakes cost $5k, currently I've paid over 8k in my first year of transferring to University, all through payment plans, relying on some credit, and working. I have only 8 more classes (about 6k) and am on track to graduate with maybe a few thousand in credit card debt at most. I recently got a full time salary job though while I am in school still so it will help immensely!! it does kind of suck that I didn't get that college experience or to study abroad, but that 30k will be a very nice down payment on a home/ investment property and to travel on my own terms :) most of my friends are moving back home when they graduate and I will be moving out mostly debt free at the age of 22!! Here in NZ, all of our student loans are from the government. Your minimum repayment amount is dependent on how much you earn and is automatically taken out of your wages before they hit your bank account and are interest free if you continue to live in NZ. You can also qualify for a weekly “student allowance” (also from the government) for the duration of your studies that you do not need to pay back. We are extremely lucky.

in Finland we don’t pay for uni, except for books etc. there is an option to take student loans of (i think) 12000€ a year. usually people divide it to 600€ a month but you could take the whole amount all at once if you want to. the student loan doesn’t have an intrest, so you pay back excactly the same amount that you got. the loan is backed by the state/government/Finland (i dunno wich of these is the right term) so if you cannot pay it back - for example if you dont get a job after graduating for a long enough period of time and therefore don’t have any income - the state will pay it back. i think you will have to pay the loan back in 30yrs (or something like that) and after that the state will pay it, but only if you absolutely haven’t had any possibility to pay it back yourself. also, if you graduate within the time limit of 5yrs (masters degree), you will have to pay only two thirds of the loan back. this rule have been made to encourage ppl to graduate fast. this does bring some concerns about equality bc many students are not able to graduate on time due to personal or financial reasons (if you have to work while studying it takes longer to graduate bc your time goes into working as well as studying), but i guess this still seems like a dream to an american student. also, students get 250€ + 200-400€ a month from government. so if you don’t need to take the loan, you get 450€-650€ a month and if you take the max amount of loans on top of that, you get about 900-1200€ a month. this is a lot compared to the usa and many other countries, and you usually can live with that amount of money even tho living and especially housing is crazy expensive here. if you live by yourself, the rent in bigger cities is between 600€-1000€ a month but student apartments are between 200€-500€. most uni students have the possibility to buy lunch at the uni’s cafeteria for 2,6€ per meal. it helps when you’re in a budget bc food is expensive here. some students are able to live without taking the loan, mostly if they are lucky and get a cheap student apartment or live with their parents or with a partner or friends. and ofc the more rich ppl whose parents pay for their apartment etc, don’t need the loans at all for living, but some of them take the loan still bc its free of intrest, and they invest it, and when its time to pay the loan back, the investment has bring you more money and that way you gain money with taking the loan. usually uni students take the loan and pay it back once graduated. the student loan here is not as ”dangerous” commitment as in the states. this was a long ass comment but i wanted to tell how it is over here compared to the states🧐

I really appreciate your video. I have the same thoughts everyday with my student and credit card debt. It gives me a ton of anxiety that I let it get so bad (especially with my credit card). The main reason I racked up my credit card was because I wanted a year of traveling and I honestly just had the mentality of "I'll pay it off eventually" which growing from that experience was not a wise way of thinking. But when I reflect back on it, if I didn't travel, I wouldn't have had the amazing life experiences I really needed in that point of my life. Okay so I live in France and school really isn't expensive (like at all). So I have a part time job, I work on weekends and I earn around 550€ a month. It is enough for a month (rent+public transport card+groceries). But I don't go out a lot with my friends, I don't go shopping every 2 weeks. And recently I haven't been able to balance income versus spending and it's stressing me out because I am 200€ in debt with my bank, and I can't get out of the cycle. Like I owe 200€ to my bank but when the paycheck comes, I'll have 550€ but minus 200 its 350€ and that's not enough so I still use the 200€ even if I was supposed to pay the bank back. The stress would *kill* me if I was in the US and owed all of that money. Kudos to you, you're doing great.

To make you feel better your debt is manageable. I owe in the 100k category I started off with 13k credit card debt now down to 6k on a 25k annual salary at one point. Now I’m getting higher salary in the 50s so knocking it down even more.

THANK YOU FOR THIS! We need more young people having conversations about debt. Most of us take on a fuck ton going into university as an 18 yr old so normalizing debt conversations is so fucking important. i just started school after taking a break for two years and, if everything goes as planned, I should be graduating without debt vs. being 40k+ in the hole if I graduated from my old school.

@@valeriavagapova I think it,' different from the U.S.There is no "Ivy League" private university system here. All universities are highly subdidized by the governement. Tuition for undergraduate programs per year for Canadians, 6 to 7 thousands$ (depending on programs), graduate programs : about 7 thousands$.

Oof. Student loans always make me think about "the college experience" that we think we're entitled to for thousands of dollars. Why have we normalized the idea of going into mass debt for a 4-year-long experience?

Thank you SO MUCH for making this video and bringing awareness. I've been on a journey to pay off my debt for the past 3 years now. The stress of how much I owed and how little I made stressed me out to the point of depression. Taking control and taking the steps to pay everything off has taught me contentment, self control, and brought me so much pride in myself. Once it is paid (on track to be done THIS YEAR!) I'll never use debt to purchase anything again.

So I was never a very good student and I ended up having to go to community college and my friend who had a 4.0 did the same. She said it would be more affordable despite getting into very good schools. now I know why as some of my friends have graduated and have 50 grand and more student in loans . Obviously 4 year colleges offer very unique experiences but I do think it is something to think about.

Good for you for turning things around at a young age. I managed to skip student loan debt by waiting until I was 25 to go to college (that way I was able to get more $ in grants because I didn't have to report my parent's income, just mine...and I worked at Walgreens/low income.) I went to a community college and was able to get a better paying job before I even graduated. But even with the degree, it's hard to find a good paying job - I make about $27,000 a year, which is more than a lot of people my age make (in Wisconsin, so cost of living is pretty low). But in my late 20s I did rack up a good chunk of credit card debt and had a car loan & furniture loan. I started following KZbinrs such as Budget Girl, and that inspired me to turn things around and I became debt-free last summer, at age 30! No way am I going back to being a mindless consumer... my focus is on saving and investing from here on out.

I am a high school senior and going off to college this year. I was in the running start program, so I have 2 years done already, but loans stress me out so much! I dont qualify for any aid because of my parents income, but they cant help me a lot. I am applying for so many scholarships and hoping for the best but I know that I want a degree and I want to go to college (I am going to a state school so it is not as expensive as a private school) but expenses are 27,000 a year! Thank you for sharing this, it gives me a piece of mind to know that there are others who are in this boat and working their way towards getting out of it.

I’m 20 and was a kid who honestly knew during my senior year or hs that I didn’t want to go to college, at least not right away. Pressures from family and other people around me led me to end up going to university anyway. Yes, I was 17 and it was my choice technically, but it never felt like it. I knew in my heart of hearts that I wasn’t ready, that I needed time to recover from frankly the trauma of hs before entering another 4+ years of school, and that overrall it would be a waste of money, and it turns out I was right. I tried for two years, but when you’re not ready you’re just not ready and I ended up back where I was in high school, depressed and alone and struggling and after another suicidal episode I left for good. But now I have $30k in debt, no degree, and wishing I had just ignored everyone in my life and never went to school. All of this is to say I agree that we need to do soooo much more properly inform kids about what they’re getting into. If it’s not something you’re sure about, if it’s only something you’re doing because everyone in your life is telling you how smart you are and that it’s just what you’re supposed to do - follow your own heart. You know more than anyone what you can handle and what’s right for you and it’s far better to regret not graduating at 22 than it is to regret being thousands in debt for nothing. PS, if this resonates with any high schoolers - pleaseee consider community college. I had family who didn’t even consider that as an option for me, but I could’ve gone for free and goddamn I wish I did

I'm 16 and I plan on studying medicine in uni in 2 years ( the school system is different in Belgium) and I'm so happy and thankful that I won't be in debt. My cousin who lives in the US has to pay of so much money, and it's so unfair that you have to pay so much money to just get an education. I wish you soooo much luck and to your subscribers who're also in debt ❤

It's really not that much debt, but it's a lot for a young person with limited income. The things you put on credit cards were not ridiculous wasteful things. I had debt like this and finally buckled down and paid it off. Two years of frugal living will take care of this. I can't describe the feeling when you're finally debt free. It's so worth getting there even though it's really hard. Good luck!

I live in Holland and it's not perfect here, the student loans are also getting higher. But I really love how you NEVER have to worry about not making payments. They can only ask a certain percentage of your income ABOVE minimum wage. If you are unemployed or working close to minimum wage you have to pay practically nothing. You also have a certain period to pay them off but after that they just go away. I'm not in the system so I don' t know how it works in practice but I think its a great idea to say "You have to pay for your own education when you have a job that pays well after college and you can miss it, but if you are scraping by the government can get that one for you. "

I completely agree. I just graduated from university in May and it wasn't until then that it hit me that I have to pay all my loans back. Yeah, I may not have as many as other students because I went to community college and then an in-state university, but just knowing I owe $14k from only 2 years sucks. I appreciate your honesty in this video because I feel like when I was first deciding to take on student loan debt, I didn't completely understand what I was getting into and I feel like a lot of other people are the same way. My payments aren't due until November... but maybe I should start paying them lol
