I can relate with the depression thing: Seven years ago I was in a really dark place emotionally to the point that I had no motivation to pick up my flute and recently (almost five months ago) my dad passed away and the first month after he died I couldn’t touch my flute, but during the rest of the summer I told myself that I needed to practice because my dad would have wanted me to keep up with my flute playing. I have my masters recital in April and one of the pieces that I’m playing in my recital (the Martinu Sonata) I’m going to dedicate it to my dad. Your Gilmore festival recital was awesome! Brava Tiffany! 😃💜

I especially relate to this comment. It's been...13 or 14 years since my dad passed. I have grown away from the depression which showed itself in my immediately in my lost of interest in achieving things anymore (it began at the end of 4th grade in primary school) and dropped extracurriculars. But this lack of motivation in achieving still persists.

Your Concert on Friday really didn't dissappoint. Fantastic playing and great selection of music. Also, the Steinway was fantastic and the acoustics in the hall were awesome ! Also quite the interesting crowd that gathered there. 80% "standard" concertgoers (age 70-80) and then a sudden drop and 20% people under 25-30. Sometimes even with their families where I wondered who dragged whom to the concert :D Also, you got a new fan, I asked my mom to come with me and while she was hesitant at first (never really cared that much for classical music and was afraid it could be too exhausting) she was absolutely delighted by your play. Great stuff, really.

Keep on with monthly Q&A series, Tiffany. I have the feeling that a % of your audience consists of piano students and ongoing performers who find here help and comfort, and foremost, the feeling that somebody is here for them who went through the same thing.

To those people who have that lack of motivation to play I get it because for me it's been hard at many times to play or want to play but something about me wants to play the way I got back is doing something that gets me out of a bad time find something new to feel better and then go back and to remember who you are and why you do it in the first place and don't forget you can choose to do it

I am a really really bad piano player. In Sept of 1992 I started to try learning the theme to Casablanca titled AS TIME GOES BY. It was great to learn about the composer & history of this music. FINALLY the gods smiled on me & I was able to surprise my mother by playing this on a concert YAMAHO grand piano. My mom had her mouth hanging open when she caught me about 4 bars into it. She was most happy. A couple of years later I was able to perform this song - equally well - at THE MUSEUM OF MUSIC in Carlsbad Ca. I am no where on your level so you give me much motivation. Thank You bigly!!!

I’ve been playing an Haydn piece for a while and got so sick of it because I played it a lot and couldn’t connect to it. It also helps when your understanding of the piece/composer improves

Thank you for filming and releasing this vlog. The questions were all really good and relevant because we all know what to do when things are going well but not so much when we are confronted with criticism and obstacles. Picking ourselves up from a fall may prove to be a struggle but you’ve provided helpful examples through personal experience on how to overcome adversity. At the end, I don’t believe in failure as long as you get up and try again. You have shown us here how to maintain resilience as part of personal growth. And, I always get a kick out of your expression when people are watching you film and the ducks were awesome! Thanks!

Hi Tiffany, yes please, keep doing videos like this one. Your "fireside chats" (riverside chat in this case!) are part of what makes your brand unique. The other thing is how you are able to sit at the piano after a recital and chat with the audience as if you knew everyone. I admire you for figuring out how social media can really work for both performer and audience, and for proving it again and again. I don't know how you find time to do it all.

Good vlog Tiffany. I found it very interesting because you spoke about a lot of different aspects of motivation such as dealing with failure and the inevitable huge amount of repetition involved in playing a piece to the standard you need to. The overarching message I got from what you said was that one of the most important things that helps you is the support from your family and that your family includes your friends who make you eat and your on line community who are also a kind of family - as well as your actual family ‘Go mum!” 😊. Keep striving! 😊👍
