I am old school when it comes to browning chicken. I never used browning in my brown stew, I rely on frying the chicken first until it browns without any browning. Then you save the oil (make sure the oil is not burnt) from frying so to add when ready to cook down. That would add more flavor to the chicken. You can also use paprika to enhance the browning but not necessarily.
