Phil Jones made his first appearance for Manchester United in 712 days when he faced Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2022. That appearance came in his 11th year at Old Trafford.
But what has happened to the defender that was once backed as “the best England player of his generation”? Seb Stafford-Bloor explains how comparisons to a semi-mythical Man United legend put Jones on a pedestal, and how constant injuries knocked him off it.

That so sad he didn’t want a testimonial because he thought no one would show up. As a Man U fan I have always thought he was unlucky, he came at a bad time in the club at the end of sir Alex’s career and was kind of the scape goat for everything bad happening during that time. I think the face pulling is fair game to an extent (although many took it too far) but I think his own club fan base might want to look at themselves about how some of them treated him. The outrage over him not giving up his shirt number etc, that quote about his parents relates to what United fans think of him (Liverpool fans are hardly going to go to a untied player testimonial) a lot of the away humour was superficial, it was a bit more vitriolic internally.

I think his physicality and workrate is unquestionable, they are two attributes that you really require to be a top centre back. Back when he used to play regularly, I felt he didn't have the best disapline though... Every so often it was almost like he was a Labrador.. happy to be out and chasing the ball. He did really well against Wolves though, deserves more chances (providing he is fit).

I genuinely have such a soft spot for him. He was ridiculously good those first couple of seasons, like Fergie said, he marked prime Ronaldo out of the game at the Bernabau. He was a monster. His injury record, a couple of gaffes that every defender makes, and the fact he became a punchline, completely derailing his confidence, really hampered what could have been an incredible career. I'm so pleased he got a great reception when he returned, he looked like he can still do it, I hope he manages to find a move elsewhere and rebuild his career.

Ironically his last game he played against Wolves this year he played really great. If it wasn't for him it would have been a 3+ goal defeat. Varane actually played worse than him so maybe Ragnick should give him a shot for the next few games. Maguire is untrustworthy and Lindelof seems very inconsistent. This reminds me of the Sammy McIlroy story. When he arrived at United from Northern Ireland in 1969 he was hailed by some as the new George Best, and although he went on to play over 300 games for United and won an FA Cup winners medal, he was clearly never going to reach the legendary status that Georgie had. He also signed at a time when many of the European Cup winning team were coming to the end of their career. He himself was Matt Busby's last signing. What was to follow were United's barren years as well as a relegation to Division Two (now the Championship). I dare say that every club has similar stories. Peter Marinello at Arsenal for example.

I remember being at OT when we hammered Blackburn 7-1. He was their standout player, which is mad considering the scoreline and the position he played, and I when we signed him I was absolutely buzzing. But of course the career hasnt gone the way anyone thought. 1 thing I do have issue with though is that comment from Fergie, saying he can be the best player we've had. That never helped Jones, imagine having to then live up to that. The greatest manager on his last ever game saying that about you. Not to mention the emphasis on expectation the fans then have of you.Feel for him, as its always a case of what could have been, though if reports are anything to go by, he's rejected numerous loan moves this last couple of windows. You can only help someone so much

Even as a Liverpool fan, oof that last line about the 10 year testimonial from Jones.... That's actually really heartbreaking from a professional player. This is why confidence is such a major influence in a player's career trajectory. I really think had he stayed at Blackburn OR gone to a United squad that wasn't about to lose their best ever manager, he would've had a steadier career. Dude had so much natural talent, it's really a shame.

Yep, he needs to leave asap. However promising Man Utd may look, all is a lie. It feels like Man Utd is a perpetual sine wave which never goes above 1 to get success. I've just given up on cheering Man Utd because it leads to nothing. They look promising and die off, promising, die off, promising, die off. It's like an endless TV show. There are sad an happy moments and it never progresses into something more. I'd be back into football in Man Utd were to get relegated. That's fine for me. I just can't this limbo of cycling from 2nd in the PL to 6th and over and over again.

I remember his first two seasons when I would see him run with the ball from defence all the way to the box and it was looking so natural and almost effortless. He wasn't perfect by any means, he seemed unpolished, erratic, even all over the place sometimes but it was so exciting seeing his commitment and physicality. I always assumed that Fergie, Rio and Nemanja would help him eliminate his flaws and honestly thought at the time that his potential is boundless. But then Fergie left. Then Rio left. Nemanja too. Then the injuries came and with every one he looked less and less the player who he could have been. I would lie if I said I never wanted him out of the club, because there were times when I did. In hindsight, I know that it was not his fault. And seeing him coming back against Wolves, he seemed so assured, solid. It was like seeing another player entirely. He was the only light in the darkness of that dismal team performance. I know I'm basing this on one game only, but if he brings his fitness up to par and his injury bad luck finally deserts him, I believe he still has a lot to offer to the club. I was actually a bit relieved when he refused going to Bordeaux on loan and hope he will kick on.
