i remember seeing this on CMT (yeah I know). I was immediately struck by how fresh and different it sounded from the rest of stuff on rotation on CMT. I am not a country fan, but I love country music like this, that is honest and has a soul, that sounds like your neighbor next door could be singing it - no the overproduced yee-haw stuff that is all over the radio...country with soul....americana folk music...and Tift Merritt is probably one of the best songwriters out there right now!

I heard it on CMT also. That was back in the cable days. Flipping the channels. I found a lot of great artist and songs that way. ❤

I remember hearing this years and years ago on our local country station and loving it. Then found out she's coming to the folk festival here on a day I get a free pass, so I decided to re-listen to the song. I think I love it more than I did back when I first heard it.

As Leonard Cohen was the true voice of my generation, Tift Merrit, I am certain, will eventually be recognized as the true voice of today's. There aren't that many artists that can so completely catch the heart and soul of an era.

I swore that I was living free. Oh, you couldn't talk to me, And the pride that kept me, didn't want no company. Early morning subway train, Feeling lost and running late, Well, he held the car, and he gave his seat to me. I can't find nothing feels so fine as loving A good hearted man. He can soothe me, free me, oh I'm gonna marry That good hearted man. I told him that he'd better go Cause I was crazy and impossible, That my love was broken, my dreams had run off wild. But patient as the easy rain, He never turned away, Calling, "Hey sweet woman, you know you're not a child." There just ain't nothing feels so fine as loving A good hearted man. He can soothe me, free me, oh I'm gonna marry That good hearted man. Good hearted man, now the night makes sense, Because your tenderness is sheltering me. So I'm trading in that hothead kid For a woman I can give to him. It ain't easy, but I'm gonna do the best I can For that good hearted man. There just ain't nothing feels so fine as loving A good hearted man. He can soothe me, free me, oh I'm gonna marry That good hearted man. And I'm grateful, got to say thank you To a good hearted man.I swore that I was living free. Oh, you couldn't talk to me, And the pride that kept me, didn't want no company. Have been following her for years and think she is an uncut jewel,and should be a Mega star. She is definitely special and it breaks my heart she is not getting there faster. Natural voice, talent and beauty. Do not understand the music business but maybe she needs a new promoter. Hope she doesn't get discouraged.

Possibly my favorite song ever (ok, Janice J. might have that place with Bobby McGee) but I never get tired of this song. It reminds me of when I first moved to San Francisco in 1995 and a man on public transit (Muni) got out of his seat and asked me to sit down. It was a crowded car and I had a broken leg. No one else on that train seemed to notice. He's asleep next to me right now.

This is the type of country that should be played on country radio...not that garbage that's currently playing, littered with parodies and jokes and goofy cookie cutter lyrics and formula music. It's a disgrace that women like Tift Merritt and Alison Krauss aren't vying for female artist of the year every year. And she's sexier than all get out. :)
Psst! Hey Tift. I'm a good hearted man. Call me sometime. Great voice and great song!
@seeburg22014 жыл бұрын
A friend just referred me to Tift's music. Wow, she's great ! I agree with other posters - that too much country music is garbage - stuff I could have written on a roll of toilet paper in the john. Luckily, there are diamonds in the rough, like this woman, and Mindy Smith, Steve Earle, Justin Earle, etc. Word of mouth over radioplay anyday !
