Although a tungsten electrode is good, you might want to consider a carbon arc rod. I didn't see it in the video, but you may want to consider using DCEN. There are also fluxes available when melting aluminum. The carbon electrode will also help with dissolved gases.

Ahhh sticking the tungsten, that happens to me too! 😁It reminds of a time I was welding something for my dad and stuck the crappy 6013 he had in his basement for 30 years to thehwork piece. He chirped me about a professional sticking the rod. I just unstuck it flipped my hood down and said thats why the call it stick welding! It happens.

Been subscribed for a long time and allways love watching your videos. One (or two) question, how do you power all this? annnd, have you ever thought of selling special edition 6061 gloves, your videos bould profit from your name on the gloves and people would know they are getting good quality when buying.

I've machined the electrical connection components for arc furnaces. Couple hundred K of copper. Basically the most expensive carbon arc you've ever seen. I'm telling you the components I made basically were the connection to a telephone pole sized rod of carbon that melted battle ship quantities of steel into liquid in minutes.

I just bought the 400! Absolutely an awesome machine. Replacing my 94 vintage square wave tig 255 from lincoln. I bought that machine new in 94. Starting to get 21st century equipment now. Love your channel. Never even thought about melting with a carbon rod. Might try that for steel and iron in my crucible. I've been welding aluminum and everything else for 34 years. Your channel always shows me new ideas for our craft. Many thanks

Is your new welder an invertor or transformer? Which one did you get and how do you like it? Any real advantages of the new one and does it help you weld any better? Im still using my Lincoln Square Wave 255 that I got new around 1996, I have used a Miller Dynasty (invertor) recently and I cant really say it does anything better than my transformer machine.

Thanks for the video! I just had a pop can debate.I said when I first got my Diversion 180,I had no clue and a friend (40 year X-ray welder) told me to weld soda cans together, because they are very thin and you will learn control, heat sink, keep tungsten out of the puddle etc! And ,I did learn alot and finally welded them percectly! But the debate began when he said it was merely a party trick. For a seasoned welder I agree, but for a newbie,ot was a cheap way to learn alot!

I melted down a box of old water pump castings to make my ingots. After sweating my a$$ off all afternoon by sawing them into pieces small enough to fit into my crucible, I realized that pistons are preferred for their shape & size as much as for the alloy. LOL Using propane/air seems a lot easier than an arc, but I'm glad you had fun. Hope you wore a good respirator... Removing the wasp nest was a nice touch. Always enjoy your content.

Fun fact: molten aluminum dissolves steel... I don't think it'll be a problem in this case since your steel crucible is pretty thick, but I learned this the hard way when melting aluminum hard disk platters in a thin walled stainless container
