Same here. I never welded ever before and ended up buying one of the Everlast welders that he reviewed. I hope to "teach" my kids how to weld at some point. I just hope my teaching skills are even a fraction as good as Jody's.

hiya i don't know if he replied to you or not, but a root, is the first weld run you do, the "root run", it is the most important as you need to penetrate as much as you can into the material. when he says the first pass must penetrate into the root he means the second run you do (capping run), like you did with getting the root run penetrated into the material, you want the second pass to penetrate into the root run to ensure your fusing the weld metal together rather than just welding on top.

you could run it a little hotter but i wouldnt go nothing but maybe 5-7 amps for the hotpass, when it comes to the cap though, i wouldnt change any amperage. Because after running the last two passes the metal being welded is already hot as hell so its best to keep the cap the same amperage just to stay away from undercut.

@scottplummer97718 жыл бұрын
I have a Lincoln precision 275. Good machine. love it. 27 years in the business.Doing overhead or vertical up , all you have to do is adjust your angle to account for gravity (liquid metal) and then train your brain to look at it as if its flat.

your vids are great, just wish you could drop back a few gears and do some on basic things you take for granted, iam just starting on tig and want to know how to get my settings right, sharpening tungsten, how much heat should be in a weld especially stainless, iam trying to weld lights guage say 1.6 mm tube splice, setting gas, choice of filler rod , welding differnt guage, technec for handling and feeding filler rod, do i need an expensive helmet...that would be a great start.....

hey jody, can you do a video of 3f and 4f fillet welds with tig welding, with different tecniques of laying in a root pass? like dipping the rod, laying the rod, wiggling the cup and dipping the rod and laying the rod and wiggling the cup with an etch of each one at the end? just trying to see what has the best penetration for a root pass for pipe. i can do the laywire and walking the cup and dipping, i feel more comfortable with laywire though, just wanna see what can penetrate best. Thanks!

Hi, Jody. I'm interested in how you get such a good video of the welding puddle. Are you setting the video camera in manual exposure mode, or do you use auto exposure? Do you use autofocus? Do you protect your camera lens from splatter and light with a welding lens on the camera? Does your welding lens over the camera have an autodarkening feature?

I just got my everlast welder delivered from ups. If I want to get into tig welding should I start with a air cooled torch or upgrade to a smaller water cooled torch?
@coors180012 жыл бұрын
are you pushing or pulling? to me arc and mig overhead are easy as horizontal. it is the same principal just upside down. I cant figure out tig overhead! but i been arc and mig (spray arc) structural for 10 yrs. when I overhead 7018 I drag it. (also cause alot of time its inside a small opening and dragging is only option) if your welder is set right you should just about be able to strike your arc and hold the rod on the steel with a consistant pressure at 45 degrees and it will burn nicely.
@dlptxxx13 жыл бұрын
thats great thecnique. i was just wondering why dont you use a bit more amp on the second pass? i always heard that makes a better fusion. does it ruin the properties of the metal? what do you think?

Contaminated argon coverage? Haven't experienced it myself when using my PowerTIG but a friend of mine was using too much argon flow which started to suck air into the weld. Maybe a leak, too little argon, not clean metal, etc, too.
@ripslim2412 жыл бұрын
do you lay the wire or dab? idk i think laying the wire is better when walking the cup or on t-joints.......but everything else like pad beads just dab the filler.

do you just lay the wire or you pushing wire in the puddle?

weldingtipsandtricks Do you recommend to learn to weld with both hands? Im in a scenario where im doing a tube weld with its flat end on a vertical plate's surface along with 3 strings (piling them from the middle and out). 6-3 o'clock and 9-12 o'clock is a real pain in the a** due to a blind path for me when im holding the pistol in my right hand. @coors180012 жыл бұрын
well everybody has there own style and what I do might not work for you but. I weld really hot compared to most people. I weld overhead the same amps/volts as I do horizontal. and vert down. (no you cannot vert down 7018!!!) I only change my heat for vert up in which case i turn my heat down. with 7018 your gonna get a small belly in the weld but shouldnt be much more then hori/vert. I suggest playing with your angles. I like to stay at a 45* to the fillet or 90* to butt. draggin at a 45*
@16vastraturbo12 жыл бұрын
pulling, its angles and amps i think would it need to be done at lower or high amps then horizontal.

I wonder if a glass cup will scratch the base metal when walking the cup?
@chuckjowett584311 жыл бұрын
so for us newbies, what exactly is the root you are referring to when you say the first pass must penetrate to the root? Also, other posts here suggest 1 amp to each 0.001" of metal but you are way under that. How do you choose the amperage?
@mycarrysun7 ай бұрын
I think he's talking about the base of the weld, the part where the original 2 plates of metal touch each other. You want to make sure those are bonding/fusing together. Similar to solder where you need to get both pieces of metal hot enough so that they fuse and you're not just melting the filler to the top of the surface.

@EricWithTheBass10 жыл бұрын
I do alot I think it might be because of a dity cup and surface of the metal. It often happens to me aswell, and it cuases some bounces which makes it all chaotic, often ends up dipping the electrode in the fusion :P I suppose thh only solution is experience tho :S

@johnnytakisawa8 жыл бұрын
its probably a 309 stainless rod which is used for mild steel or when ur unsure of what kind of steel u have. the stainless wets out really nice and when ur amps are set right it follows the arc. it really makes for a great arc shot and helps show what the fundamentals of wtc are
