I've got to say, I've learned more about Tig welding in an hour watching some of your video's than I have reading books and watching other people's instructional video's in a year! I bought a Lincoln 225 precision Tig a few years ago and had all but given up trying to weld with it until watching your video's, now I have a new found interest in trying to Tig with again. Thank you so much for doing these, it appreciated more than you'll ever know!!!

I also like keeping 70s-6 around for mild steel. Comes in handy when you get dirty material and don't have time to clean it properly. Will produce good welds even through mill scale, oil, paint, and even slight rust. I have even pulled it right off of a MiG spool...

Where did you get the wide based combo square? I did the same thing with PVC (I used conduit) then made a board with the appropriate holes to hold the holders in line along the back of my vise bench between it and the wall. I did not cap mine but glued a sleeve on it and then gorilla glued it to the wood block in a vertical position. Great idea. I use the PVC for many things. Also converted an old hot water tank into a horizontal insulated warm storage box for my stick rod as I don't use it much since the advent of home mig welders (some of my stick is from the seventies! Bought a few hundred pounds at a going out of business sale.) and I live in a temperate rain forest. Keep it at 100+ degrees and it stays good, even 7018. It was a good welding project. Always enjoy your channel--well almost always!

Hi Jody I know this is a old video but i want to say It'm just a hobby welder and I hear about proper storage of rod especially 7018 this is a old trick my grandpa taught me I store my 7018 rod in 3 in pvc contain with a screw on cap and. I drill the glue on cap end but in shut off valve then a small brass tee and 2 hose fitting 1 I connect. To flow meter on argon tank other 1 I connect to a hand vaccum pump I suck it down to 10 inches of vaccum then open argon tank and put in about 5 or 7 psi using gauge on vaccum pump then close valve and store under pressure in argon pressure tank I have stored 7018 rod for years like this runs like new out of the box I know this is probably not ideal but for what I do works great u can build these pressure storage vessels for like 20$ each

I bought a DEKOPRO Stick/Lift Tig welder machine. It was cheap as chips tbh but I had to buy a seperate Lift Tig Torch.. I'm a complete newb to this game save for a year back in the 80's, that's the 1980's man when I was in Metalwork class in high school as u would call it in the US. Here in IRELAND we call it secondary school but I did some gas/acetylene welding and Arc welding back when I was 12/13 yrs old.. I loved it but tbh I loved the acetylene better than the stick welding. I kept getting stuck to the workpiece.. LMAO I have only recently bought 2 small inverter welding machines so I can Tig weld on one and keep the other one for stick welding. I don't really want to be running both but it's a lot less hassle changing thing out all the time. The DEKOPRO machine is a decent little mahine tbh. I've never TIG welded b4 so this is brand new to me.. This was a brilliant video packed full of the kind of information I will need so now it's dropped into my welding playlist.. Thanks man.. Salute to u sir from Dublin, IRE..

Great tips for the person who has just acquired a Tig welder. Have you made a video where the material you are Tig welding on has been in used? Materials with dirt or oil, lots of rust. I know that to achieve the best welds the surface has to be cleaned as much as possible but will using Tig be able to do the job?

G'day Jody, this was a really good article. I am a newbie in Australia and presently setting up my TIG bay in the shed so your info was well timed. I know it comes so naturally to you but sometimes could you mention the handpeice sizes you are also using for a particular job. Also, can you explain what is commonly called "Euro" in regards to TIG handpeices. I recently purchased a Weldsmart Synergic 250A AC/DC Pulse TIG that came equipped with a WP26 euro handpeice and I am laying beads with 1.6, 2% Thoriated tungsten using ER70S-4 wire on about 51A (16 gauge MS sheet) and it is ok but I find the WP26 handpeice really cumbersome and tiring on my wrist. Is it best to go to a smaller handpeice on smaller jobs, eg WP9F. Also, if I am using a WP26 and 3.2mm tungstens would you expect the shielded arc to be the same size as using a WP9 with 1.6mm tungsten. Another question please, can you have a single cable from your machine that can be interchanged with several heads, eg WP9, WP17, WP26 and finally, if most cables are similar why do some machines have 2 pin control interface connectors, others 4 or as with mine 5. Really love your articles and get heaps of good theory to go away and learn (or balls up). Cheers Gordon

I have tig rod holders made from steel pipe. I know this is fine for ER-70 filler and 309L, and I am guessing that 312 rod is probablly fine as well because they're used to weld carbon steel. BUT, will this adversely affect 308 filler and alluminum filler? I'm worried I could be get some carbon pickup on the very ends of the rods, and potentially on ANY part of the rod that comes into contact with the mild steel. Perhaps I could place some plastic in the end of the tube to prevent the stainless/mild steel contact, or even just get into the habbit of snipping off 1/2" before welding stainless with wire that's been in contact with carbon steel. Anyway, thank you for your input.
