dude, im a machinist. And aspiring welder. I cannot stand quietly as i see you do these repairs for whatever machine shop you do work for. AS a machinist, these repairs you're doing, like the broken tap removal, or gap filling on the aluminum, are very handy things to know. But my man, what machine shop can't extract a tap. lol. I love your videos, and behalf of all competent machinists, i apologize for this shop you're dealing with who expect you to do these random fixes, but at the same time, i thank you, for posting these vids just in case i screw up and i need a welder to add material to a part that i myself screw up. lol

Sunny Rooprai lol I’m went to welding school and became a semi-trailer mechanic and now I currently work at a machine shop as a mill operator/welder aspiring to be a machinist. I operated a manual lathe at school to bevel my pipe and always had an interest in Machining.

The part was resting on 2 V blocks and only one end was machined. Not a precision setup but there was no way to get it perfect other than chuck it up in a lathe and that seemed like too much work since it only needed to be close enough to final machine another .020" or so off ..and it worked.

I would setup the same as for aluminum as far as machine settings , gas flow , etc. and use az101 filler rod. get a coarse carbide burr that wont load up with mag for burring out fractured surface to clean bright metal. a preheat of around 200f should help too. keep a very very tight arc, and run small short beads and let cool while you clean the soot from each pass...good luck

good question. I thought about using a positioner as well as a cold wire feeder. I just figured I would keep it simple so I could check runout quicker

I try to wait several minutes between passes on stainless. Otherwise the welds get oxidized and gray/black. I kept going in the same direction but alternated starts and stops. It might have helped to alternate direction. In the end , the final machining turned out fine.

on stainless, speed cooling might introduce stresses, but wont harden the metal. carbon steel is different and can harden.

I wish I could have some hours welding with you, like those students had. I think I would learn ALOT!! You are an amazing welder, and thank you alot for your videos. they have helped me along the way. I'm done working where I was before, but when I get a apprentice place I will look back over them and learn some more :)

Nice work showing the dial while you where welding to show it shrink back. When you were dry washing, how much heat where you putting into the shaft? Were you actually running a puddle over what you had already done? At least that is what comes to my mind when you say dry wash. I've done that to try and make my welds look better...

Hi Jody, great video again, I never saw the compressed air method up till now. I also received the TIG-fingers, they are great thanks! One question, what's the diameter of the wire you are using to build up welds like that? (in mm?) Thanks, have a good one!

I noticed that you air cooled the weld when you were straightening the shaft, does fast cooling the weld introduce any hardness? I ask because alot of guys when MIG welding auto panels cool the weld with a wet rag, I was always told to let it cool naturally or you harden the weld and make it brittle. Curious what you think
@diederrr
@diederrr 11 жыл бұрын
Jody how long did you wait to cool for the shaft ends (not middle) a minute or so? Or did you just run passes back to back. And I thought alternating direction would have been important on something like this. Thanks bought some tig fingers !

haha done the shield/hood thing but flashed so badly had to take a 10 min break to see again... the guys in the shop are still laughing... a question about walking the cup, it seems the angle of the torch is rather steep i mean to me looks way more than 10 deg or so, if i`m correct in what i see (a miracle) how do you get away not balling the filler? thanks for the vids jody, i learn a lot in every video

Your advise would be appreciated ( and yes I have flip a face shield once or twice myself just shows how comfortable you become wearing head gear

may i clarify sir, you do the trueing by welding some parts. my question is at the last part, you taken off the welded part, won't it spring back to since you taken those out and seems the welded part had been way outside the circumference so you seemed taken of all of that. thank you.
