On Tuesday afternoon, an 8-month-old tiger cub was brought to Oakland Zoo by California Department of Fish and Wildlife, who rescued her from a privately-owned facility.
Our vet team performed a thorough physical exam, CT scan, and bloodwork. They determined this mistreated tiger is suffering from multiple fractures and metabolic bone disease. She is now receiving nutritional supplements and pain medication to help start her on the long road to recovery, as we determine next steps in her healing journey. Our vets are cautiously optimistic that she will make a near-full recovery, but she will likely develop arthritis later in life.
Due to the ongoing legal case, we cannot provide specifics on her history before entering our care. We will continue giving her full-coverage care until she is healed and medically cleared to move to a new home at a licensed facility specializing in big cat care.
We are Taking Action to promote responsible pet ownership, and to rescue and re-home improperly owned animals, including this sweet, mistreated tiger.
