The Pannonian Dances were not originally created as a single unit, a collection of compositions written for a tamburitza quartet. I wrote the first dance a long time ago out of pedagogical needs because I simply wanted to utilize the familiar csardas and give it a classical music form, frame it, stylize it, harmonize it, and present it in a new context. Several years later, I received a request to write another quartet (no. 2), with the same idea, to find some folk motif and transform it into the attire of classical music. That's when the idea of creating a larger number of quartets, inspired by Brahms' Hungarian Dances and Dvořák's Slavonic Dances, began to develop. In the following years, the remaining four dances were created, each gradually becoming more complex in musical and technical sense, but all sharing a common characteristic - each is based on a specific (dear to me) melody or song originating from the area of former Pannonia, a large geographic space rich in culture, tradition, and excellent music. I could name all the melodies, songs that I quoted (in fact, some will be extremely obvious), but I like the idea of leaving a certain dose of mystery for the listeners and performers to find the starting point of each quartet on their own.
I hope that this collection will contribute to the artistic music of tamburitza and demonstrate the tamburitza quartet as a compact chamber group that functions very well acoustically and musically.
