Completely concur with your opinions. Bootlegger was the best overall and best cocktails, but Tonga Hut probably would be a better overall experience with tiki newbies (we had repeated service issues at Tonga Hut, though). And the Reef? The best place to go when you want to have a good time. All three are worth doing.

My wife and I just returned from Palm Springs (my first time) and stayed at the Caliente Tropics and visited all three bars as well. Unfortunately, my wife wasn't feeling great so we didn't get to try many cocktails. We enjoyed the Reef and we were the only ones there as well. We sat at the bar after eating and the bartender was great. I ordered the Ambrosia and we talked about cocktails. I was lucky enough to get the recipe and I can't wait to make it at home. It was a nice cocktail but not my favorite of the trip (#2). We visited Tonga Hut and this is when my wife started feeling down and a little sick. She drank non-alcoholic cocktails and enjoyed their Painkiller. I had the Rum Barrel which was really good. I had the Chai Tai but by this time, I was feeling pretty happy so I don't remember exactly what I thought. It was good I'm sure. Last day we visited the Bootlegger and yup, it was our favorite as well. I loved how intimate it was. We didn't have reservations but they let us sit until the table was needed but we decided to move to the stools. This is where I had my favorite cocktail. It was the Thai Iced Tiki. It was delicious and I loved the "to-go" presentation. Amazing. My wife also loved her non-alcoholic cocktails - the Pod Thai and Mai-Papaya. We can't wait to go back. Thank you for recommending the Ambrosia.

It’s funny, my wife and I did the same tiki bar tour in the same order you did it! We felt the same about The Reef and Bootlegger. The only difference was what we experienced at Tonga Hut. I’m glad your experience at the Tonga Hut was better than ours. Our server was rude (and I have a fairly thick skin and am forgiving) to the point I just wanted out of that bar. I spoke with our grumpy server and the gentleman seating people about joining their grog log challenge and was told that only the bartender could help me and he was too busy that night, come back another day. Now I could completely understand if the place was jumping but it was a light Thursday night so…… This was our third time visiting them and I must say, we were underwhelmed by them twice before and flat out insulted the third. Like baseball, with their third strike, their off our list the next time we visit Palm Springs. Like you, we see great potential with the Bootlegger. We thought their drinks were tasty and their staff super friendly, a great foundation to build upon. Love your channel and music too! Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the comment! Every bar is at least worth your three strike tolerance. I think that was a fair assessment by you guys... Sounds like the place just didn't work out for you. 😕🤷🏻♂️ that's a bummer. I'm sure that Murph, the owner, would want to try and rectify that for you.

Great video you two. I appreciate how difficult it must be reviewing two of the bars where we know the owners personally. And they are great people. But I think you did it in fair and balanced nature while still talking up the merits of all 3 venues. BTW, the background music can be a deal breaker for me as it is what I fell in love with 25+ years ago and ushered me into the World of Tiki. Trader Sam's has this down pat. A two hour loop of fantastic tiki bar music. It was a little comical to me that you preferred the Classic Rock as AN IMPROVEMENT over Hip-Hop for a tiki bar. Now there's a comparison I don't what to have to make. LOL. Thanks again to you both for a great video.
@BreezewayCocktailHour Жыл бұрын
Haha... yeah, classic rock doesn't really belong in a tiki bar either, but then it just comes down to personal preference. We just don't like hiphop at all.

@@reubenzamorano7014 I don't know how that is ridiculous. That was the experience that we received. 10:00 on a Friday night isn't considered 'after hours' as per the bar's website. I have time stamped photos from our trip that day that we arrived there right at that time. And we did go back twice on that trip and the music was contemporary Christmas music... which is perfectly suitable (though there are plenty of great surf bands that put our Christmas records). Our experience at the Reef was fine. I don't believe it to be a negative review of the Reef and we couldn't have put out content any more honest than what we posted.

Hello everyone, I’m the Hale Pele bartender in the video at Bootlegger! Spike and Larissa, it was fabulous meeting you both! Ironically, just today I had to quit Bootlegger Tiki because of abusive work conditions. While I would generally never say something like this in public, due to the public nature of this video I feel I need to tell everyone- DO NOT GO TO BOOTLEGGER. I was minimized, humiliated and gaslit when I brought my in depth Tiki and rum knowledge to the table- the very expertise I was hired by the owner to bring. Yesterday I was forced by the bar lead to stay in the kitchen as punishment, was insultingly lectured on how to properly wash and dry glasses and wasn’t even allowed to go past the curtain to stock them. And what did I even do to him? I guess I stepped on a fragile ego. What a great use of my nerd-level knowledge of Donn Beach recipes and the many styles of rum 🙄 I have had the pleasure of serving many of you over the years at HP, The Alibi, Tiki Kon, Tiki in Waikiki or at my Golden Tropicana pop ups. My reputation as a knowledgeable, friendly and professional tiki bartender goes before me. I know my tiki, I know my rum. And I know my worth. After I got there I found out the old crew were also abused and quit together in solidarity. 🚩🚩🚩 Spike, thank you so much for this great video! A lot has changed since you all came in last week. I have a new gig in the works, can’t wait to make an announcement soon! I promise to make you all the cocktail of your dreams. And I guarantee that proper tiki tunes will be playing! But support bars that treat their staff with dignity. I know The Reef and Tonga Hut are good to their people. Thanks for hearing me out everyone. Hope to make you all a cocktail soon! ❤
@shelleydrinks Жыл бұрын
@Richard Elmore Yeah you dodged a bullet! Outside of being abusive, it’s also unsanitary. They literally keep glass juice bottles IN THE SERVICE ICE. Someone is gonna drink a shard of glass. When I spoke up, I was gaslit and treated like an idiot. In a meeting today I cut the bar lead off mid sentence when he began gaslighting me. I got up to leave and told him to have fun with his amateur hour mess of a bar. Not to toot my own horn, but when you hire someone from one of the worlds best tiki bars, you show them some respect and relish the opportunity to learn a thing or two. I was hoping to bring them up a level. But no way I’m taking a step down.
@shelleydrinks Жыл бұрын
@Richard Elmore If this other gig doesn’t work out I plan on going there! I’ve also heard they’re looking, and they need multiple people. Tiki bartending is so much fun, you should definitely apply too! I’m here for the long haul, hope to see you around!
