So, after his Tikka T3x Arctic / C19 Canadian Rangers Rifle was returned from warranty repair, Mike takes a look at it and gives it a good wringing out at 300m on the range with SalTech and GGG 308 Win ammunition.

On a similar subject, a small aperture can convince the eye that two objects are seen in circumstances where that is physiologically impossible. The aperture size should not be too big, of course.

Keep in mind that the actual functional requirements for this rifle as issued to the Canadian rangers is to be able to kill a polar bear at danger close range, and to not snap in half at -40.

Between you me and the snow bank, I think 308 is a good all around and practical cartridge for the Canadian Rangers. But the thought of polar bears at danger close distances and getting one or maybe two shots off? 308 is not the caliber that comes if I have to flip that coin. Admittedly…I don't live in Canada and don't run across polar bears. So maybe my perceptions of them are skewed in the same way they are about Great White Sharks? Regards, Marky

@@John1911 Well, it's a bolt action so they may be issued a cartridge w/ heavy-wt. bobos? A 180gr pill will have good enough penetration to do the job, given adequate placement. Plus a lot of those Rangers are of 1st Peoples extraction, so they've grown up near the big bruins and aren't as likely to get flustered like some city slicker encountering one for the 1st time [he says, looking in the mirror!.. ;-)]

I GOT MINE BACK IN 2018.. Never an issue with mine. Iron sights are great. It's one of the most accurate rifles I got. A NICE ONE FOR SURE!

Remember a few things. Best results come from use as designed. Designed for glove wearing in very cold weather. A wooden stock is "warmer" to the touch in below zero conditions than plastic. Barreled for close range shooting (25 to 100 yards) and a 180 grain bear stopping bullet. Bears are more of a threat than bad guys. Test firing with 180 grain bullets would have provided a better look at how it shot than 145 grain plinking ammunition. Is the barrel twist for 180 grain bullets? Yup! Using a scope to determine true accuracy would have provided better information. I love my Tikkas because they are very accurate out of the box. I would love to see 100 yard scoped results with 180 grain ammunition. I know my Tikka varmint .308 with 175 grain bullets shoots MOA at 600 yards with reloads. Factory ammo would be a little less but that isn't what the Arctic was designed for.

Really, my only complaint is that we have reached a point where the only way to have "good things" outside of the Third World in weaponry is to spend a fortune more than already what was considered a fortune in the day. The SMLE update that Canada adopted for its rangers was not a cheap gun in its day, but it worked remarkably well for the cost of its time compared to these new toys. So much money for rather small improvements. Such is Modernity...

That's because this is no longer modern, I can't legally buy one in Australia but an AR-15 costs about a third of this tikka and it is a far more complex rifle. This is now a speciality item being produced and priced as such.

I've noticed a similar trend in American gun ownership. Gun companies have realized that catering to the lowest common denominator and selling them $500 guns (that costs them $150 to make) is a much better business strategy than that of old where all guns were hand built, put together, and finished by professional gunsmiths. Now you're getting wonky assembly line specials and if you wanted a nice handgun (say a quality 2011/1911 or Revolver) you'd have to pay $3,000 USD MINIMUM. The new consumer doesn't know much about guns so gun companies have been able to keep prices high and quality low.

Being Canadian and a Long Branch shooter, I was quite excited about this rifle when it was first announced... Then I heard the price! It may be worth it, but it is money I can't afford, so I bought an 18.7" Ruger Gunsite Scout instead. Since the GSR was less than half the money and maybe even a little more accurate, I am very content.The Ruger is not that picky with ammo either. With a 6-24x scope I have found at least six factory loads that will shoot 10 shot groups under 1.75" at 100m. All this said, the T3x sure is a beautiful rifle! Thank you for the report.

The aperture situation DOES stink. I love a ghost ring for low light/moving target/100m and under. My groups are just about as tight with the only real loss for me being post clarity and target definition. That's a shame. My favorite aperture setup is the US "A2" with the ghost ring. It is VERY versatile.

I’m super impressed by your shooting, I was shooting at 100 yards with my Mauser 98k Much slower taking my time and it’s challenging to see a man size target at 100 y distance and the group was like over five inches for sure and using the yugo ammo that’s supposed to be good surplus, but you shooting at the speed and that 300 yards omg that’s really impressive and it makes me feel here where I live we don’t have any marksmanship fundamentals. If they made this in a green laminate, I would be all over it like a rat on a Cheeto. I disagree with many and think .308 is perfect, and there is ZERO reason you can't down a polar bear with a .308. Heart and lung shots are worthless on a bear charge. Brain only shots are key, and it will down one easily if placed appropriately. Reason being, in case you don't know, is a bear has enough oxygen in system, and it's heart only beats a single handful of times a minute normally anyway, and it can go a long while without both lungs or a heart. It also dumps adrenaline in it's system madly fast. So bears can go a full minute or often more without circulatory organs. Also, it allows for cheap practice and is a standard NATO caliber, so ammo is cheap, easy to find, and can work in warfare environments, too. Lastly, the rifle being bolt is critical. Many don't have experience in super cold, where even pump action shotguns and almost all automatics will freeze up and totally stop functioning. Rifles like this purposely designed to function in extreme cold (by extreme, I mean sub -40⁰F/C) are mandatory. The vast majority of folks have no clue what fifty and sixty below is like. Negative ten isn't even close guys. Arctic warfare is a whole nother level. I would like to see a removable trigger guard too, btw.

Not that I'm likely to pay the asking price for one of these, but I'm disappointed to hear that they scrapped the large "battle sight" aperture. As a military small arms instructor, I'd argue that it's hugely important feature for iron sights on a service rifle in that it provides options for the soldier: 1. It is a quicker option for aimed shots at closer ranges (at very close ranges this site style in particular with a wide aperture is brilliant for the "put the front site shroud circle inside the rear aperture circle, pick up the post and fire HK diopter style snap shot). 2. It obscures less of the soldier's field of view and it also allows for easier shots with both eyes open (both of which increas situational awareness), and ; 3. It is a much more usable option in sub optimal light conditions (important for a rifle used in the Arctic where facing permanent darkness for months at a time as well as 24h of sunlight reflecting off of snow are both factors).

I had a air rifle with sights similar to yours there. I did not like them at all, centering the front post being my main issue. Im sure they work fine, but i much prefer notch type sights. Or even better, a low power adjustable scope :P while im here, it would be awesome to see some clay pigeon shotgun-ing on the channel. Its the best shooting there is imo :)

Nosler is by no means a hollow point. Its a soft point with kind of odd bonding and depratmenting of the bullet. Good for hunting, though.

I would love to in an ideal world, but since you can't guarantee that it'll keep its centre, it'll be left as it is. If the sight had been like that from the start I'd not have said anything about it - it's just that having had it and then deleted it is a bit of a shame.

Hey I like your rifle...But here is where a Canuk comes along and mentions his sporterized 303 shoots just as well.... This Tikka T3x Arctic is only partly like the C19...The C19 has a different bolt/cocking shroud assembly, and no uncle Mikes Studs on the models I've seen. Also, the C19 has sling mounting points on the side of the stock. (Handy).

Did they give you a range or some guidance to the zero setting on the aperture to have all of the range setting to be correct? Have you ever tried heavy bullets like 180-grain nosler accubond? I read that it is the ammo the Arctic was designed for but couldn't verify? Thanks After watching a 2 time I heard you can't use the 180 nosler. Just got mine in 6.5 Creed and it comes with the sights you have except the 0 setting is a much bigger ghost ring than the other 5 settings.

@@BlokeontheRange Sorry sir. My front sights on my 6.5 are the same as your replacement. My rear sight starts at 0 and increases to 5. The 0 rear ghost ring is much bigger than the other ghost rings. Interesting. Sounds like you've got the new front but earlier rear sights. I wonder if they had more stock of the latter due to replacing more front sights cos the problem with them was more acute? The earlier rear's choices of aperture sizes was indeed rather better (but I didn't like the play in the drum).

Are the mags a bit stiff when reloading on a closed bolt? It requires counting, but it does seem to be a bit more efficient.

They go on fine - it's the muscle memory of loading with chargers where the first reaction is to open the bolt. I need to work on a Tikka-specific technique for reloads, and also for working the bolt.

Hello - been following for a while and I like your "style". I notice with the "match" ammo in the deliberate group on the round target you had quite a bit of vertical stringing - which is usually a rifle (frequently bedding) or ammo issue - the group told me that you were shooting superbly, and that with a tiny bit of tuning of rifle or ammo you'll have a winner in your cabinet.

@ 5:58 -- Those stubby little screwdrivers have taper heads: you'll need to hollow grind the tips so you have parallel flats on the tip [vs. the trapezoidal x-section they have now] or you'll bugger your screws. Get a proper set of gunsmithing screwdrivers if you can, but modifying those properly will be enough for range tools... #Don'tUseCarpentryToolsOnYourFineMachines!

@@Trancefreakeh Just something I've picked up from experience [intro to machining class at the local city college ~ 25 years ago, watching channels like C&Rsenal "Anvil" content, etc.] The bottom line is that there are tons of very subtle variations in screwheads, and an appropriate screwdriver to match, hence the popularity for things like replacing all your JIS crosshead screws [which only *look* like Philips head screws!] on your motorcycle with Allen hex drive screws you know won't strip out... as long as you remember to use the correct Allen key [SAE or metric? Doh!] ;-)

@@nunyabidniz2868 I'm looking into that as well, but I feel I'm not very succesful :). I have these IronSide and IFixIt kits with dozens of kinds of bits, and yet it still doesn't feel complete. Why don't we all use Torx? :D You mentioned Imperial and Metric kinds, well... Imperial is hella hard to find, here in Belgium and I was close to tearing out my hair when I found a common household machine that used a MIX OF THESE! Funnily enough, a Torx head that was close enough to that imperial Hex screww got it out. But Mixing Imperial and MEtric heads is a sure way to strip Hex heads out. Good tip on Arsenal btw.

@@Trancefreakeh Unfamiliar with those brands, but they sound much like the "buncha low-quality tools in a blow molded plastic case" that every auto parts & hardware store has over here in the States, & they're almost always absolute garbage. In one of Duelist1954's videos [also found on Full30.com as "The Duelist"] he said exactly which 3 bits he uses from Brownell's huge roster of hex-based screwdriver tips [which fit in any 1/4" aka 6mm hex drive tool handle] for working on the various black powder replica pistols [his channel's specialty is historical BP repops] he shoots [which of course are all made by Pietta or Uberti in Italy, so they're probably some nominally metric screws, but having the correct head that fits the slot width & breadth is the real key...] I tried looking for that vid this a.m. during my 1st reply, but couldn't turn it up. I'll have to see if I can find that info, I know I must have written it down somewhere. If nothing else, I can go check my orders from Brownell's and see what they were...

@@nunyabidniz2868 I see. FYI: I Fix It (.com) is a electronics repair, precision screwbit set. Specially for repairing cellphones, tablets, computers. Good stuff, but the contrary of heavy duty. IronSide is comparable to Facom, KnipEx or Wera, just a bit more to the price/quality side. See it as excellent semi professional gear, but not top quality automotive gear. Good enough for 95% of us. Finding quality gear is hard man ;). Ps. I don't ( can't ) own firearms, I was purely commenting on the how-to-use-tools. I DO love the Anvil restoring video's though. Class craftmanship!

Yikes!! You should be shooting ~3 shot groups, then let the barrel cool, to check accuracy. Otherwise, are just testing barrel heat warp stringing etc. ? Also, best to use relatively economical Hornady Whitetail ammo, which I find shoots as good as Hornady's more expensive match ammo etc. Astonishing accuracy for a basic hunting interlock round. ....That is, unless you are testing for military firefight conditions, which is great for the mad minute shooting you did. Very nice groupings here taking into consideration it's a 300m range and iron sights. Since when are non-Swiss Army issued ammunition allowed on these ranges? As far as I can remember we had to use GP11 and later GP90.

Very annoyed today to be told by my local Tikka dealer after having a foresight on order for my Tikka Artic for 3 months, that Beretta Australia has informed them that Sako/Tikka that they will not supply the part. Not only is it disturbing to have sent $3500 AUD on a premium Tikka rifle which I can't apparently buy parts for. But may be a breach of the Australian Consumer Law. Section 58 of the Competition & Consumer Act of 2010 states parts are to be supplied for a reasonable period by unless informed in writing prior to purchase. Which I did not receive. If I had I would not have spent $3500 on a CTR.

@@BlokeontheRange It seems my complaint was listened to. Just got an email from Beretta Australia; stating they will now supply the sight and any parts for repair. But will not supply parts other than for maintenance of a rifle. Which is inline with the Australian Consumer Law. I must say Beretta Aust have for the most part been great to deal with. They may have explained to Sako their obligations under Aust Law.

I should explain more, yes we do have a Omnibusman in that we have the ACCC which enforces consumer law. They advise that you 1st make complaint to the company. Which I did quoting the Aust Consumer Law sect 58. Beretta Aust got back to me this morning, with the mentioned result. Had they not agreed to supply the part I would have then filed a complaint with the ACCC. Sako in supplying the parts only for repair meets Sect 58. However it doesn't allow Artic owners to upgrade their sights. Which I think is still poor consumer support.

But my fellow service rifle competitors will have ensure their sights are damaged to replaced as you suggest. ;) In my argument to get the foresight I used your replacements as a precedent. I'm glad you made that video otherwise I wouldn't have known about the newer option.

I have literally watched GB target rifle team members put the rifle down between shots at Bisley. And personally, I have done the same and cleaned a Queen's 1 course of fire on 2 occasions doing the same thing myself.

When I took a brief foray into TR (i.e single shot centrefire target rifles shot slowfire with slings and jackets) a fellow shooter, who had considerable experience and success in the discipline made the following observation when I spoke to him about maintaining position through a string of shots: "Once you have taken your sighters, judged the wind and are ready to carry on, you pick up your rifle and if you have done everything right, your shot goes where it should. Why would you not repeat that process? Why would you tire yourself out, keeping the rifle in the shoulder whilst waiting your turn to shoot, when you already know that you can hit when you bring the rifle up from the rest?" He gave up TR saying that as he got better it was less and less about shooting and more and more about wind. He went on to shoot 1500 (Lever Action - GB) and was the UK champion for many years.

I wish you would have mounted a scope, used a rabbit ears rear bag and taken at least one minute between shots for serious accuracy testing with 5 shot groups. "Mad Minute" shooting is NOT an accuracy test of this rifle. The RUGER Scout rifle was out years before the TIKKA C 19 (Canadian Ranger) rifle and the C19 appears to be a copy of the RUGER Scout with stainless steel barreled action and laminated stock. Personally I would feel better owning the stainless steel Ruger Scout knowing it is the SAME quality as the TIKKA C 19 but for far less money. Both have accurate cold hammer forged barrels and rugged bolt actions, the Ruger being a Mauser clone with controlled feed. BUT... the RUGER Scout is 1/2 the price of the TIKKA C 19 and the Ruger/Magpul magazines are 1/5 the price of theTIKKA magazines! So I'll take the RUGER Scout, thank you very much. Supporting the Finnish social system is not my priority. I own a 6.5 CM Ruger Precision Rile and a 6.5 CM Ruger American Predator. Both have Ruger'scold hammer forged barrels and are extramely accurate, as in 1/2" at 100 yards with match ammo. And what's this "...wrap you hand around it properly." stuff? WHY would you want to do that? I've owned many centerfire sporting rifles and never had the need to "wrap my hand around" the barrel - ever. Just hold the forearm. Keep your fingers OFF the barrel.

The Ruger Scout has a cast receiver. It's nowhere near the same quality. Once you get one in your hands and work the bolt, it's no comparison. You don't test the practical shooting capability of an iron-sighted rifle (to compare it by its predecessor iron sighted rifle) by mounting a scope, nor by leaving at elast 1 minute between shots. Both of these defeat the object. Leaving 1 minute between shots would even hide a heat-related accuracy issue. Dear Bloke, Ruger uses an INVESTMENT CAST method for making their actions. At a very specific temperature technicians pour the molten steel into a mould. The resulting chrome moly or stainless steel action has a BETTER grain structure (i.e. stronger) than hammer forged steel. It is the same weight per cubic centimeter as hammer forged steel, not "light and cheap". Ruger's hammer forged barrels are extremely accurate as in the 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger Precision Rifle I use for competition. The only area that TIKKA excels over Ruger is in their trigger. But Mon Deu! their C 19 prices are 2X Ruger's Scout Rifle price. I have handled both and the RUGER Scour has a nice feel to the action, IMHO, as good as the TIKKA. Further, relating to SAKO quality, I own a 6.5 PRC Browning X-Bolt Pro and WAS intending on buying a SAKO Carbonlite - until I tried the X-Bolt Pro and saw that it was the same quality, slightly better trigger and for a LOT less money. Damned if I'll help pay for Finland's social system by purchasing their overpriced rifles.

Not sure from that description that you've handled a T3x Arctic... On Swiss prices it's 2/3 more expensive (not double), and from what I've seen so far, well worth it. What you're getting over the Ruger: - range-adjustable drum. Cos we don't all shoot sitting at picnic tables at fixed ranges. 1/4 MOA click adjustment to zero. The Ruger's rearsight is seriously budget. - a bit more than an inch of sight radius. Which, if you're shooting at 300 yds, you'll notice. - A properly free-floated barrel, cos there's no rail bolted on to it part way along. - much, much more compact mags. Ruger mags look like they should take 15, but they only take 10. - machined-from-solid receiver that's so slick you only have to tilt the rifle slightly above/below the horizontal for the bolt to run back/forth under its own weight. - 70° rather than 90° bolt throw. - scope rail over the action rather than in front of it if you're foolish enough to want to mount a scope. At what angle from the horizontal does the Ruger's bolt run back and forth under its own weight, and can you show me you shooting through the CSR Urban Match with it? I don't know about Swiss prices but a Ruger Scout Rifle sells from $819. to $977. and a TiKKA Arctic is $1,849. so, yeah, 2X the price of the Ruger. No. This is made by Tikka. The actual C19's for the Rangers are made by Colt Canada, and are not for private sale. They have shorter, red stocks with push-button QR bases, and a different magazine base. All the civilian ones are made in Finland.

Lee-Enfield action is smoother and faster. T3x has a much better trigger and faster lock time, and has greater inherent accuracy which is then offset by the much shorter sight radius.

Block it up to the spindle's height and square it up on the cross slide, put a centering drill in the lathe or a boring bar if you can find one small enough. Viola, centered and enlarged. A bit of measuring/gauging on the setup, but it'll get er done as we say in the land of bubba. *Given how scarce/impossible those sights to are replace you'd have to be pretty nuts to do that.

Respectfully, I disagree. Twice now KZbin has deleted/vanished my long drawn out reply on making the fixture you’d need. Having handled a t3x arctic when my local shop had one in, apparently the only one, and paid attention to the wobbly rear sight, which was like the first example you had. I’m certain it’s possible, and if Tikka ever makes the sight disc available to the public I will send you one with it properly machined out. I’ve done similar work to A1, A2, and HK G3 clone drum rear sights, even made a peep/ ghost ring rear for my Ruger MK3 Pistol (not a great idea for a pistol, but fun to try). I own a Tikke T3 CTR and tbh im not that impressed. Its a good rifle, but not sure the supersmooth action is worth all the Hype. I shoot a Ruger American who cost like 1/3rd who was realy good to. Im not sure a super smooth action is the primarey function of a do it all rifle, as this rifle takes TRG mags its kind of a horrible deal for hunters, as you would like a 3-5 round magazin. Best deal is then to convert it to like a AICS style magwell and then you down like 300 USD down the drain.

I think it's going to be a lot nicer and hopefully stronger than the worn out Lee Enfields and it seems a very good rifle, but as with every new gun some things will need to be hammered out and newer iterations will improve it. The most iconic rifles like the AK and M16 took years to get right. The m16 took 40 years of poor reliability before someone simply started making good magazines and then the thing was almost unstoppable. I have high hopes for the tikka, but time will tell the long term durability.

@@PaulMauser One, I have to disagree about m16's you are grossly exaggerating the myth of unreliability. And second, it's a bolt action, not exactly new tech. For how much it costs I wouldn't accept anything other than perfection right out of the box. It's the Rolls Royce of rifles but seems to me only marginally better than the Ford equvilents.

@@TheOwenMajor I'm not exaggerating the m16 unreliability the mags were a serious problem for years and were almost solely the source of problems for it. Bolt actions aren't new technology, but neither are semi autos. I think the tikka has a few problems that will be ironed out and I'm banking on it being worth the contract price because it is a very robust arctic capable rifle and it checks all the requirements, but I can't travel to the future to find out and it's not my rifle so I can't give a serious review.

Even you mentioned your eyes, and then the barrel length, or was that an attempt at accounting for your group size, I know the Tikka is very capable at that range, its a bloody tack driver.
