TikTok CEO: We don't promote or remove content at Beijing’s request

TikTok's CEO Chew Shou Zi faced tough questions from US lawmakers during their congressional hearing at the US Capitol on Thursday (March 23) amid debate over whether the Chinese-owned short video app should be barred for being a potential national security threat to the United States. Chew reiterated that the company did not promote or remove its content at the request of the Chinese government.

The algorithm is not taught by the CEO, instead it was taught by the users themselves. Parent should teach children to not watch dangerous/taboo videos and it will stop recommending them. Teach children to watch animal videos, and it will show farm, animals and cat videos.

Is it a yes or no question? We could also ask how many planes have landed safely in the world, or how many businesses and entrepreneurs were born because of TikTok. Yet, when a plane crashes, the whole world knows, and it's very tragic that a child passed away because of a video that could have been avoided. There are thousands of talented people, resourceful information, and inspiring ideas, but one tragic event puts the whole thing into a negative platform, and a thousand good things are forgotten. The question is more towards putting blame, and somebody has to be responsible for it. Is that it? It's not built to destroy people, yet people use it to destroy other people. I could say the same thing about a pencil, which could kill people, but it's not built that way. You can use TikTok and choose to see what will help you to grow. It's sad to say that we can't change what has already happened, and I do hope the families will get justice. What we can do now is prevent it from happening again, and I believe every creator wants the best safety and privacy for its users.
