_"Social media is like state surveillance run by gullible volunteers"_ - Stewart Lee
@TBaguette4 жыл бұрын
This doesn't really apply to the users who give the best view possible of their life, thus falsifying the information they put online to a certain degree and not reflecting how they actually live. For example, a lot of people look happy in their pictures on Instagram, or videos on TikTok, but feel pretty miserable IRL (sadly for them).
@AgeingBoyPsychic4 жыл бұрын
@@TBaguette Yes but a lot of these companies also see the user's private life, eg Facebook owns whatsapp and so can know what's going on in people's private lives, not just the stuff they make public. How much could someone learn about you from your entire whatsapp chat history? Would you be ok publishing it uncensored online? That chat history (or facebook mesenger, instagram, snapchat, tindr etc) exists not only on your phone but also carbon copies on countless servers around the world, that you can't delete.

If every social media platform was open source, everyone could customise their own social media platform and that would mean a lot of competition for the popular ones. So they will never agree to do that.
@KingJellyfishII3 жыл бұрын
@@OchiiDinUmbraa I think you underestimate the amount of work it takes just to run a social media platform, let alone customise and maintain the code. open source doesn't mean anyone can copy you in an instant - they would need server hosting (which is expensive), and good technical knowledge & ability to program to not only add or change features but patch security issues and keep up to date.
@OchiiDinUmbraa3 жыл бұрын
@@KingJellyfishII First, you only need server hosting when the platform has many users. In the beginning, a home computer is enough. Second, you can create a software that add your custom code on top of the original source code and replaces it where it needs to be done. So you can just wait for Facebook to do all the security issues, copy paste it and then add your own custom code. Im study computer science and yes, open source means you can copy paste the entire software and modify it how you like. Would any random person from the street be able to do it? No, but look at cryptocurrencies. There are thousands right now and they all are all based on the same source code.
@KingJellyfishII3 жыл бұрын
@@OchiiDinUmbraa that is true, however as you say all of that is fine for a very small number of users, it is difficult when the numbers increase. but if the number of users is low, then it is not a threat to the popular social media companies. so whilst it would be easier than it is currently I don't see it becoming an issue. think of things like signal which are open source and popular and don't have any popular clones.

10:53 I 100% agree. And I'm glad to hear that people are considering the real, long term solutions. If you ask me it should be a law that all software should be open source and the US should use the power of their market to pressure companies to make the right decisions instead of cow towing to China's horrible practices (not that I trust the US Gov to do that but we need grassroots movements to focus on it)
@nayaktuhin4 жыл бұрын
I don't think all company will agree on open source, and the mentality of the general public must change to explore beyond their comfort zone. If you watch any unboxing of an electronics, you hardly ever find a reviewer saying, well do not select these option of diagnostics, or ad personalisations and stuff, all they do is next -> next -> well setup is done, you saved your time in the cost of your data and any data that you generate. @NICKELGHANDI4 жыл бұрын
I don't think more laws is the answer. That puts more power in the hands of those who already benefit from near total control. What we need is for individuals to be responsible for themselves instead of looking for some kind of babysitter for their data while exhibiting no degree of self control. Open source platforms exist and are actually really good. We need them to grow by being used, not by legislation from some government. Let the big corps die because they refuse to change their model and the open source competition does things better. Anything besides that is still essentially communism.
@space15464 жыл бұрын
@@NICKELGHANDI Honestly, that last sentence cracked me up. The word is authoritarian. Use the word authoritarian. Communism is something that is actually much closer to what you advocate than you could ever imagine. What you are advocating for there is much closer to a form of market socialism than it is to capitalism anyway. The state and capital are one and the same. This has become fairly apparent. Socialism is basically just open-source as an economic policy. The only reason you think of communism and socialism the way you do is because of things like the USSR, DPRK, or CCP which all use it as another buzzword, like democratic, or republic, even soviet, a word that originally defined a type of council, all things that none of the authoritarian hellholes actually had. This wasn't helped by the fact that these countries all crushed the actual socialist and communist movements like the C.N.T. F.A.I. or The Free Territory of Ukraine. The way you get things like open-source software to succeed isn't through more authoritarianism. That includes the authoritarianism created via the power structures of capitalism. Capitalism and the state are in a symbiotic relationship, helping each other extract wealth and power from the workers. You want to end the violation of your privacy? Well, the way you do it is simple. Fight for a world that doesn't focus on a market before people. If you think we need a market economy so be it, but it needs to put people first. It needs to focus on cooperation. It needs to be free of these parasitic structures that make the completely unethical violation of our privacy something that is encouraged.
@NICKELGHANDI4 жыл бұрын
@Alex Spray I think we actually do agree. I don't think they should get a pass either, but that giving more power to a governing body already in bed with the corporations isn't in consumers' best interest. Users don't have to use the services and are free to use something else. They just don't out of laziness, unawareness, ignorance, etc.
