As a parent I feel like anything on the internet labeled as “safe for kids” is one of the most unsafe places for kids. Maybe the label attracts all the weirdos, idk. I’d rather teach my kid how to be safe themselves on the internet, supervise, communicate, let them ask questions. I feel like the label “safe for kids” makes parents let their guard down and I’m not about it. KZbin for kids has some bizarre stuff too.
@Richie___Rich

When I was a kid the “kids social media” were those MMO games - club penguin, animal jam, moshi monsters, poptropica, etc. obviously they weren’t 100% safe but they were heavily moderated. most of them needed the parent to opt in to the chat function otherwise you could only select from a list of pre written phrases, and they constantly reminded kids to NEVER share personal information, not even your real name. i feel like there’s nothing like that anymore. now all kids use social media apps the way adults do, sharing personal information, attaching their faces to everything, messaging anyone, and being exposed to adult content without understanding the potential consequences. i didn’t realize how bad it was until i started working with kids and now i’m sure when i have kids of my own i’m monitoring their internet use like crazy

Onision is (or was, I haven't checked on him in awhile) on KZbin for Kids and his content is extremely adult. Dude has prior history of abusing minors and adults alike. definitely think it attracts creeps. it's weird, when i was growing up, our "social media" was games like webkinz and club penguin, both of which were strictly moderated and on webkinz you could only choose from a list of pre-written messages lol. you weren't allowed to share your full name, age, location, or any other personal info in your username or in chat with players. let alone share pictures/vids of your face!! these are such basic safety measures, why do modern "childrens" apps lack these??

Yes, this! So, when you choose a school that alsready has kids enlisted - do you get to know who they are? Kids being pressured to put their full face and name online at such an early age when they're prone to saying downright vile things is just... ugh. Nowadays either legislation is making it increasingly difficult to educate children on how to stay safe, or children who are 7 know more about the internet than their parents and teachers do. It's hard to educate when the people listening know (or think they know) more than you. This is something parents who are younger don't understand because they grew up also knowing more than their teachers and parents, and seem to have conveniently forgotten how dangerous it was for them growing up with unlimited access to the internet as well.

if it seemed like there were more protections and security then i could see this being an interesting idea but it seems very unsafe and easy for kids to doxx themselves. like connecting what school you go to now gives a general location for where that kid is. there also shouldn’t be any kind of challenges that put kids in weird situations (flexibility challenge etc). also kind of creepy for kids to have their ages out on the app, like its just more information that can be used against them or benefit predators.

This is so f*cking disturbing. As a person who WAS targeted and gr*omed online as a child, this hits way too hard. It just keeps getting easier and easier. We need to protect our children

Either the developer made a genuine mistake or *oh god they knew what they were doing.* Also, I get the feeling Nintendo's going to misread the app's name as "zigzagoon" (I know I did >_>;;) and start suing

They’re knowingly collecting data from children under 13, which has been illegal in the US since 1998, and not only that, they are encouraging and INCENTIVIZING kids to provide sensitive information. There is no way that’s an innocent mistake imo; it seems nefarious as hell

I used to play popjam when I was about 6, which I still don’t recommend, but at least it blurs inappropriate messages and you used to (when I didn’t use it) post videos and show your full face. I recommend not giving anything to your child, coming from a minor myself.

The most disturbing thing about this app is the school listing. Like if a kid is signing a by themselves which obviously they can, they are just giving away their location to every creepy Tom Dick and Harry out there. That's nuts😮

I fully believe there need to be online spaces designed for kids (like moshi monsters or club penguin), but not like this! If you are marketing to children, do NOT make them out their real names, faces, or ANYTHING on your site! Insane.

they should implement some kind of system like unidays where you have to input and confirm a school email to sign up. not saying this would prevent predators from signing up but it at least makes it a little more difficult

In a reply to one of their reviewers saying basically “this app is predatory” the company said that they only allowed SIX YEAR OLDS to THIRTEEN. So they’re lying to people so they can feel more safe 🤦 it’s so stupid, not to mention, 6??? That’s so fucking weird

I completely forgot about this app, 3 years ago I used this app because my mom didn’t let me get TikTok💀 they would take videos down for random stuff even if it was appropriate, 3 years ago it was safe and there was no weird stuff but it seems like that has changed

It seems like they are trying to monetize the ability to be a loser pedo and watch kids on their site. Disgusting. My kid is 20 now, but if I had a school-aged child, I would NEVER let them on this app. Thanks for getting the word out.
