Like a great Tumblr post once said “pretty shitty how baseline human activities like singing, dancing and making art got turned into skills instead of being seen as behaviors so now it's like the point of doing them is to get good at them' and not 'this is a thing humans do, the way birds sing and bees make hives” So I’d say art is as self serving as brushing your teeth 🦷

hey girl I just came home from 6 months at an ocd clinic. I wouldnt say that just bc we 'connected the dots' between a black cat and bad luck that automatically means its true. I think we as humans have no control over anything except our own actions and thats kinda terrifying so to relieve some of that anxiety we have these little things we do to make it feel like we are in control. Avoiding a ladder is not a big deal but when little things like this go out of control it can turn into a serious case of ocd and thats not fun!

Broski- I’m an artist and have been my entire life. It’s a blessing and a curse to be one. I chose at a young age to completely immerse myself. I struggled for many years of feeling like a failure but looking back I can’t imagine what my life would be if I didn’t listen to my calling. As an artist- we are constantly judged by our work but once you get in the habit of producing working for yourself and not others, everything changes.

It was very very common for artists of the century to commit sui*ide (especially those of the romantic era) because these artists were seen as being better than the “normal” or “regular” human. They, Goya included, were held to this level of being other worldly and genius that at times it became hard for them to create due to all the pressure and to keep up with society. They were seen as “mad” when really it was just mental illness. This then lead into the Impressionism and abstract era as artists began to realize things are just shapes and what you see of them

my mom and i often have these types of discussions when listening to music, we're both big fans of 60's and 70's rock, and we talk about the 27 club and how a lot of musicians, and artists in general, are often dealing with heavy shit. depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc and how we think that they're drawn to the art as a way to cope. we see it all the time in muscians and writers and painters, they use their art as a way to cope and escape and deal with fighting against their own minds. i myself do that to deal with the things i've got going on in my own head. i think for those reasons, that art can be very self serving but in a positive way.

Times that celebrities would die it would be this weird feeling of, well what I know them as and how I interacted with them is still alive, their products are what I connected with not the person. I think Brittany is one of the most real creators out there. she is so intelligent, so caring, so forthcoming and vulnerable with her audience. I love how much you talk about Guernica by Picasso since it is one of my favourite paintings as well. I once heard a very interesting interpretation (or at least a partly interpretation) of this piece that, if you look closely makes a lot of sense. Of course it depicts the attack on the town of Guernica as well as all the suffering of it’s people. But, there is something more (beautifully) painful to see there. If you look at the woman on the left holding the baby and pay attention to the poses of the other people and farm animals, it has a somewhat very religious underline: la piedad (I don’t know how to it is called in English) of virgin mary holding her dying son jesus. So within all of his cubism he successfully depicted what is considered to be a classic in art history. Keep up the Pod, I love it so much!! 😊😊😊

Something we often discussed in college (I majored in music education) was the purpose of music in schools (or just the purpose of music period). Oftentimes schools argue for having music programs because it “improves math scores” or “instills responsibility” and a myriad of other reasons. While these may or may not be true, it focuses on how music improves someone/test scores outside of the music subject. So we discussed why can’t music just be for music’s sake? That thought always stays with me and Brittany’s thoughts on art in this video really made me think about “art for art’s sake”. Anyway idk thank you Brittany for your amazing videos I love it when you talk about art and history like this I could listen for hours!!

Yes, art is ultimately self-serving, but it does not have to be a bad thing. Sometimes, all you can do in this life is serve yourself and do what makes you happy because the world is on fire, and if you can't serve anyone else, you might as well serve yourself.

Hi Brittany, love you! Just wondering though: why are we even having the discussion if art is self serving or not? Why did that question even come up for you? Art is created by one’s self to depict the reality they individually see and are processing. It’s a glimpse into someone else’s mind and heart. It’s shared to connect in a deeply personal way to other humans. To see an experience, feeling or setting through another persons eyes. Art is literally just a tangible emotional connection and understanding. It invokes compassion toward humanity no matter the context. The fact that it’s displayed and shared to others is inherently good and humanly connecting no matter how beneficial to the artists personal processing/ no matter the message or emotion attached with it. Not everything needs to be a statement or have meaning. Art, like people, is multi faceted. To imply it’s self serving would mean … there’s a selfish intention behind the creation? But the intention to make sense of life & process it singularly, then share life and connect to others isn’t selfish at all. So for me I find the question of whether it’s self serving to be pretty futile.

💫Here’s my little art therapist soapbox: If an artist is tapped into the collective consciousness that is grieving a communal pain or atrocity, I believe that act of “self serving,” or expressing that personal pain through healing arts, heals outwards as well. As we process trauma, whether personal or collective, we are opening up the possibility for others to heal as well. This could be through the direct experience of art sharing, or just in the way we move through the world. Introspective self nurturing only adds love back into the collective, which I believe is essential for global and communal healing.

I've never heard anyone perfectly describe watching content of the entertainers I admire most like you did. It's like, you enjoy their content but sometimes you feel a weird sadness as well. Like a sense of longing, maybe? And almost like missing them once you've consumed the new content? Idk, I think these are valid feelings and that it doesn't mean you're unhealthily obsessed with someone. It's a deep and complex admiration.

I'd absolutely love if Brittany could put chapters in her videos that are roughly named after the different topics she talks about bc this way you could just skip a topic that is too sensitive for your taste but still comfortably watch the rest of the video without having to jump around yourself trying to find the start of a new topic, that would be AWESOME 😊

Avoiding content because it will make you emotional because you love it so much is such a vibe. I’ve avoided watching Harry’s music videos since Harry’s House because I am not emotionally ready still and need to take like a full day to watch them all and have a breakdown.

I haven't listened to every episode so I don't know if she's talked about it but I would love to hear what she has to say about Paris Hilton and her batshit INSANE childhood. Everything about that case just blows my mind, her having the foresight to know EXACTLY what persona would get her famous even though it was just a way to cope with what she's been through. Her documentary was lethal lol

I'm so shocked Brittany didn't find the audio thing sooner. I just thought by last year I would have heard her mention it. Some history.... Sooo..the audios... have been a thing since the mid 2010s but on sites like Literotica, Reddit, and KZbin. It got traction on Tumblr for a bit before heading to Reddit. Then it really got going on KZbin and Patreon. Now they're apps of the content. One is even owned by the sister of the creator of Snapchat. For me, It wasn't until creators like Gaelforce and CardlinAudios certified it, got creative, and it became a career for some creators. But tbh... the whole 2020 really pushed the supply and demand for it and I guess it's dipping into other fandoms. People really like them because you can dip your toe into something spicy, especially when there's content warnings beforehand. I see why it got so popular.
