So as a Dutch person, out of habit and instinct I was laughing at the German word for gloves as well. Then I translated it in my head from German to Dutch and realized our word for gloves is similar, ‘handschoenen’, literal translation is ‘hand shoes’. I mean, I can respect the fact that all Germanic languages just don’t bother to be creative with naming certain things. Another classic Dutch example with the same vibe is ‘Zeehond’. Literal translation is ‘Seadog’, meaning ‘seal’. I mean, it is true, they look like the dogs of the sea. Now I can immediately think of tens of examples for English and Dutch words 💀
