His redemption and her forgiveness came way too fast. He only started truly feeling guilty when he learned that she might not be able to have children, and then acted like everything was fixed, as if he didn't abuse torture and rape her until she almost died. I love Xu Kaicheng and his performance as emperor Xu is admirable but I can never forgive this character... or how the script turned this into romance without having him deal with the consequences and properly make amends to Tilan.

Despite his crazy character, he had some strength as an administrator and a forgiving heart like in the case of Fang Haishi trying to assasinate him twice, denouncing him a bad king in the palace examination , disguising as male etc. He identified talent in his surbordinates and critically analysed reports from his ministers before taking action. As for his hatred for Tilan, we should somehow blame it on the culture of arranged/ forced marriages.... the emperor made it clear from the word go that there was no lady in the world who would replace his late wife Zizan.

From what I've read and what other viewers have said its to hide any unwanted sound from the background, sometimes the actor's voices don't reach the microphone and is really quiet on film, and sometimes accent. I think one article was saying Chinese media wants actors to have an mandarin accent so if any actors have an accent from another dialect then they have to re-dub it. My favorite is the added sound effects. The clothes swishes, foot steps, etc. I saw one drama with added Sound effects and the foly department apparently thought there should be a sound of foot steps on wood while the actor was walking on carpet lol

Warning spoilers..kinda.. This girl is the younger sister of the emperors first wife and Empress. He was a absolutely head over heels in over with her. They were together even before he was ever going to be emperor when he was just a unfavored little prince. During the rebellion of his uncle a military mistake lead to her death. And since then the emperor has never been the same, he become cold, ruthless, and endlessly angry. THAT being said this girl was sent by her father because she and her sister looked exactly the same. Her father hoped that because they looked so similar she would be able to win his favor and ultimately help manipulate the emperor to help her country. This plan failed, before even meeting her the emperor had intended to have her killed in transit however the FL saved her during the journey so she arrived to thr palace alive. AFTER seeing her he became enraged and spends months verbally, and psychologically abusing her. Finally they start moving forward together and start getting along. However the emperor does not sleep with her. So then she makes the mistake and leads to this situation. One night when tbe emperor is drunk she dresses up like her older sister. He becomes enraged and does sleep with her forcefully every day for the next month. As the Emperor does bot have a empress and because of palace rules she is not allowed to have a child before the non-existent Empress does. So he forces her to drink a tonic every day to prevent pregnancy. It works. But as thr doctors stated this tonic is not supposed to be consumed so often its basically poison. Because of this she gets extremely sick, and at one point the doctors tell the emperor that due to her prolonged consumption of thr tonic she may never be able to have children at all. Explanation was long but there is alot of back story here Sorry let me clarify something. After months of drinking the tonic AND refusing to get medical attention she becomes this ill and almost becomes infertile. If you are curious why she refuses to get medical help. It's been like 2 years of constant torture for her in the palace she is exhausted and is trying to die. She does not seek medial help because she is trying to die for her mistakes and because death is the only way she can leave the palace.

After she scolds him multiple times for his treatment of Tilan and after they have a heart to heart where Haishi explains that finding someone to help him recover from his grief is a blessing and not a curse and that there is no woman,wife, or lover in the world that would be want to see him torture himself or others like this. the Emperor thinks back on his time with Tilan and finally puts his thoughts of his lost wife aside allowing her to rest in peace. At which point him and Tilan become a true couple and she gets pregnant

The emperor ex-wife is Tilan's sister. They have same face but diff attitude. The emperor behave coldly toward Tilan because he know Tilan's country trying to gain power through the marriage. Tilan also know this fact and first she only living her life but at the end, she got persuaded by her brother (poor Tilan, she stuck between her brother and the emperor). Tilan dressed like the emperor's ex-wife and went to his bed(to seduce him using her face) eventho she know this action will cause the emperor mad. The emperor in his anger stated that he agreed to help Tilan's country per her request and sleep with her but on condition she cannot bear any child. As result, she fall sick after drinking contraceptive decoction everyday.
