Orca whales remain in their pod for life, often side-by-side with their mom and siblings. Tilikum ("Tilly") was captured near Iceland in November 1983. He was torn from his family when he was two years old. He currently lives in captivity at SeaWorld Orlando. Kyle Kittleson has made a video expressing his opinion.

Poor Tilly. The orcas knew what the humans were after the night they took 2 yr old Tilly from his family. 2 adult female orcas died in their quest to save the young with them and then split open to go to ocean floor. They had a plan for when humans came for their young and exercised it that night. The one from Free Willy was set free but the pod did not accept him so he ended up alone in the ocean and would go up to boats to see humans. He ended up dying from a respiratory infection. Way to little and to late for Willy and for Tilly. Tilly was driven to madness. A creature so beautiful and intelligent performing for food and kept in a shoe box when not performing. What did he dye of? Heartsick, loneliness, anxiety, and anger. No telling how he really dyed. and was done with him. Orcas in the wild are a strong intelligent team.

When he was transported to SeaWorld, drugged to do tricks, and soon, after killing his trainer dawn, seaworld staff drained all of his jagged teeth out. I wouldn't be surprise that SeaWorld killed him, because they just already stated that they cured his lung disease. I believe that SeaWorld probably did something much more horrible to tilikum.

After watching the documentary #BlackFish, Sea World will NEVER see a dime of my money. Under what authority have you captured these whales?! Years of research has determined that they are highly intelligent, social animals that experience pain and grief... They mention with emphasis that they have not captured whales in the wild for over 35 years and that since then their animals are born captive. "BORN CAPTIVE." Their life expectancy/cycle is 50-60 years, their offspring don't even leave their parents until they are around 15 years old. The only positive aspect of your business will come on the day you close your doors! The idea that you are living off of these creatures is sickening. You speak as though the Orcas personally told you they prefer the life they have in your tanks to the life they had in the wild. Nature has provided for their care. Yes and no. Tilikum deliberately targeted and killed humans on 3 occasions. He was highly intelligent and must have known the love Dawn had for him despite the tragic circumstances. He nevertheless killed her brutally. Large intelligent mammals should not be captive in an artificial environment, most free thinkers understand this fact. But many were breed and lived in captivity and would not survive in the wild. Orca have a matriarchal hierarchy that is impossible to recreate in captivity hence the internal problems this creates. Tilikum was bullied by the dominant female. We have seen the immense majestic power and intelligence in these amazing creatures because of Sea World who brought this to a huge audience. But now enough is enough we must leave them where they belong in their natural environment. Once all captive Orca die we should never again consider entrapping these amazing creatures. RIP Dawn and RIP Tilikum.

Belive it or not, not only did some trainers know, but they also tried to speak out, and they were either, written up, demoted, fired, or God forbid sued for saying anything that went against the business model of SeaWorld. One former trainer described SeaWorld as a "cult" The trainers were brainwashed, and silenced. SeaWorld even blamed Dawn Branchau for her own death! The trainers may have been complicit, but it's the SeaWorld corprates who deserve to be blamed the most.

It’s a physical sign of depression. If you see any whale with its dorsal fin flopped, then it’s safe to assume that animal is in a state of depression or has been in such a state. A beak whale was spotted in the wild with a flipped dorsal and it was assessed to have been caused by a depressive state.
